Branding for a startup publishing house based in SE London. The idea for the identity was to create a retro feel with a modern twist. this was achieved by simplifing old computer

icons by reducing them down to a basic line vector.

BLACK COUNTRY PRIDE

Page 11: Christian Gyde Portfolio

[5]

A personal project inspired by a trip to my mother’s hometown. The Black Country is a small region in the West Midlands situated between Wolverhampton and Birmingham. After visiting the area I was struck by the immense pride its residents have for the region. This led me to create a brand and identity for a fictional festival that celebrates all things Black Country. The idea behind the project was to use modern branding to attract a younger audience and to get them involved in celebrating their roots, whilst instilling the same pride in their area as their parents and grandparents have.

Identity and proposal for a culture focused zine. Peckham & Proud celebrates the bright and vibrant culture of its namesake, it is split into three sections: past, present and future. It will be used as a tool to educate new residents of peckham about the area, and also to instill a sense of pride and nostalgia in the people who have lived there their whole lives. The identity for the zine was inspired by the grittiness of peckham’s surroundings juxtaposed with the bright African culture that resides there. This was achieved by combining black and white documentary photography with bright colours and patterns from locally sourced African

fabrics.

ABOUT:

Graphic Designer and creative currently looking to embark on an internship as an integral part of a diploma in professional studies which will coincide with my studies on the Graphic and Media Design course at The London College Of Communication. Great enthusiasm & ability with a love for detail and experimentation.

EXPERIENCE:

SIMILARLY DIFFERENT.

Similarly Different was a workshop I attended over the summer of 2015, organised by Oswin Tickler of Smallfury it ran for two weeks and consisted of a series of workshops in which students from LCC and students from Portland University utilised LCC’s Various facilities such as Risograph, Letterpress and Screenprinting to collaborate on small one day projects. The results from the collaboration where shown in LCC’s own Well Gallery in exhibition which was attended by various industry names and lectures from LCC.

SOLIDARITY 4 REFUGEES

A strong impulse to help during the current refugee crisis in Syria led me to seek out the founder of Solidarity4Refugees and offer my services as a designer. I set up regular meetings with him and developed a strong brand and voice for the charity based on its needs. This included a logo, flyer and press release template that is easily editable for the client’s regular usage, as well as the social media visuals. The charity has been featured on The Independent, with my branding.

THE TIMES.

Whilst preparing for the diploma in professional studies, two former designers from The Times newspaper came into LCC to run a workshop with second year students. The task that they set was too re-design the layout of an already published article in a way that reflected the articles content. This was my first experience of working within strict brand guidelines such as choice of font, choice of photos and number of pages, although at first this seemed daunting it was actually a challenge I quite enjoyed. The end results from all students where judged by the two designers with myself being awarded “best feature opener”.
