We’re so glad that you’re here. We hope that worshiping with us today nourishes your spirit and that you will come back to worship with us again. Please be sure to sign the guest pad located at the end of your

pew so that we can follow up on your visit with us.

For our visitors with children: our Nursery (up to age 3) is open and available to you in our lower level where our caring volunteers are ready to watch over your child. You can worship with peace of mind as

you will be given a pager so that you can be contacted immediately should you be needed.

Worship Activity Bags and activity sheets are located in the front of the Sanctuary for children to use. An usher is able to help direct you if you need assistance.

All children are welcome to come forward for our Children’s Message. As today is a Communion Sunday, following the message, children ages 3-5

are invited to follow our teachers out for Preschool Kids’ Church and can be picked up in the lower level following service.

Children kindergarten and older will remain in service today to participate in Communion.

Thank you for worshiping with us today.

*At these moments, we invite you to stand in body or spirit.

Please silence all electronic devices prior to the service.

Large print copies of the hymns and orders of worship are available in the Narthex or from an usher.

REFLECTIONS & INSTRUCTIONS ON COMMUNION

Communion is a time for quiet celebration. Please refrain from talking with neighbors as others are in thankful prayer.

Holy Communion is a gift from God to all of God’s people. It does not belong to one particular church or denomination. At Christ Presbyterian Church everyone who confesses Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is encouraged to come to the table.

Appropriate responses to receiving both bread and cup include: “Thanks be to God” “Amen” “Glory be to God”

Preparation for Worship

*Hymn in Procession No. 366 “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling”

*Prayer of the Day Leader: Redeeming God, you come to us in Christ Micah 6:8 to rescue us from slavery and lead us out of captivity. Matthew 5:12 People: Guide us by the wisdom of the cross, and show us how to live a life of justice, love, and blessedness. Amen.

Call to Confession Let us confess our sins, Psalm 15:1-5 for the Holy One delights in blessing those who seek to walk with God.

Prayer of Confession (in unison) Merciful God, you pardon all who truly repent and turn to you. We humbly confess our sins and ask your mercy. We have not loved you with a pure heart, nor have we loved our neighbor as ourselves. We have not done justice, loved kindness, or walked humbly with you, our God. Have mercy on us, O God, in your loving-kindness. In your great compassion, cleanse us from our sin. Create in us a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within us. Restore to us the joy of your salvation and sustain us with your bountiful Spirit. (please stand in body or spirit)

*Assurance of Pardon Leader: Sisters and brothers, 1 Corinthians 1:30

your sins are forgiven by the faith of Christ, who chose love over hatred and forgiveness over blame. People: Rejoice and be glad, for God’s mercy is great; Jesus brings healing, justice, and peace.

Invitation to the Offering

1 John 3:17 How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods

and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help?

Offertory

Anthem Michael McCabe

Strengthen for service, Lord, the hands that holy things have taken;

let ears that now have heard thy songs to clamor never waken.

Lord, may the tongues which “Holy” sang keep free from all deceiving;

the eyes which saw thy love be bright, thy blessed hope perceiving.

The feet that tread thy hallowed courts from light do thou not banish;

the bodies by thy Body fed with thy new life replenish.

– Syriac Liturgy of Malabar

*Doxology LASST UNS ERFREUEN

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Him all creatures here below; Alleluia, alleluia!

Praise Him, above, ye heavenly host;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia . . . Alleluia!

*Prayer of Dedication (in unison)

We thank you, O God, that you have blessed us Matthew 5:1-12

with an abundance of gifts for the flourishing of your world.

May this offering of our life and labor reveal your love

as we seek to share your promised reign with all creation. Amen.

*Invitation to the Lord’s Table

*Hymn No. 529 (stanzas 1 & 2) “Draw Us in the Spirit’s Tether” *The Great Thanksgiving

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Leader: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them to the Lord.

Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Leader: In every time and every age, O God, it is good and faithful that we

give you thanks, for your mercy is sure and your steadfast love

endures forever. In your compassion you gave us Christ Jesus, who

frees us from darkness and lights our path to endless renewal and life

eternal. And so, with all of creation, and with the saints of every age,

we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

*Sanctus (sung by all) Thomas Pavlechko Permission granted: © St. James Music Press 2008

Leader: Blessed are you, O Christ, servant of the universe. You came among

us to feed and heal and teach, to confound the haughty, to confuse the

tricksters, to challenge the wrong-hearted, and, in all these things, to

give hope to those who long for peace. We remember that on the night

he was betrayed, having gathered his friends at the table, our Lord

Jesus took bread and gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his

disciples, saying: “Take and eat. This is my body given for you. Do

this for the remembrance of me.”

Leader: And again, after super, he took the cup and gave it for all to drink,

saying: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood shed for you and

for all people for the forgiveness of sins. Do this for the remembrance

of me.” Remembering our Lord’s self-giving love, we proclaim the

mystery of faith:

People: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

Leader: Blessed are you, O Spirit, giver of life. Be our guide and teacher,

today and always. Come now, O Prince of Peace, Spirit of Love,

Breath of Life. In the unity of the Holy Trinity, in gratitude for this

great day of resurrection, we praise you, God of all that is, now and

forever. Amen.

Sharing the Bread and Cup Communion Anthems Alfred V. Fedak O Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. O Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. O Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant us your peace. David Hurd

Love bade me welcome: yet my soul drew back,

guiltie of dust and sinne.

But quick-eyed Love, observing me grow slack

from my first entrance in,

drew nearer to me, sweetly questioning

if I lacked anything.

A guest, I answered, worthy to be here:

Love said, You shall be he.

I, the unkinde, ungrateful?

Ah, my deare, I cannot look on thee.

Love took my hand, and smiling did reply,

Who made the eyes but I?

Truth, Lord but I have marred them: let my shame

go where it doth deserve.

And know you not, says Love, who bore the blame?

My deare, then I will serve.

You must sit down, says Love, and taste my meat:

so I did sit and eat. – George Herbert

scripture, read Our Future in Heaven (Revelation 21-22).

Questions for Reflection: How do we live in hope of a reality we cannot yet see or, at best,

catch only fleeting glimpses? Where in your community’s life of prayer and service do you see

instances of God’s humility? Then give thanks, and ask God, Where am I being called to walk

humbly with God in the ordinary course of my day?

Westminster Class: A new course has begun and will con7nue thru June 17, 7tled:

The Mountain Top View: What Jesus Wants Us to See.

A ‘Rabbinic’ Reading of The Sermon on The Mount

Zev Rosenberg will make use of his background in Hebrew, Aramaic and Rabbinic

literature to indicate how a first century Jewish teacher in the Rabbinic movement might

have read The Sermon on Mount as Jesus would have delivered it in Aramaic. A fuller

understanding of this crucial text requires some understanding of how it would have

been heard in its original cultural, religious and linguis7c context. The course will be

taught by John David Geib and Zev Rosenberg.

TAG

Tuesday Afternoon Group Tuesday, May 15 The TAG season wraps up on Tuesday, May 15 with an entertaining musical performance featuring Gibbs Music Intern Mario Buchanan on the recently repaired and restored Steinway piano in Westminster Hall. Their program will range from Broadway numbers to popular songs that people can join in. There also might be some appearances by other members of the staff in singing! The TAG chefs will again prepare one of their delicious homemade meals. Plan to gather at 11:30 am for a time of fellowship and greeting friends, followed by a meditation at 11:45 am, and lunch at noon. The program will begin at approximately 12:45 pm. The cost is only $7.00. TAG will start up again with a new season of programs beginning Tuesday, October 16, 2018.

WILL YOU COME AND FOLLOW ME?

Sunday, May 20 @ 6:00 pm Tom Trenney with the Chancel Choir and YOU

Singing Great Hymns of Our Faith

In the last year of his life, our fellow sojourner, Jim

Ke/lewell, was researching and wri7ng par7cularly about Methodist hymnody. He had a life-long love for the hymns

of our faith and always sang with enthusiasm and sincerity.

He took seriously every word of every poem-hymn sung in

worship, and he would oLen discuss some of the theological details with his worshiping friends.

This Hymn Fes7val, presented in his memory, will have a theme invi7ng us to answer God’s call

to “do jus7ce, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with our God.” The bulk of the selec7ons

will be old favorites such as:

“Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee” – “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” “Leaning on the Everlas7ng Arms” – “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling”

“How Firm a Founda7on”

Also included will be some of the new favorites of Christ Church worshipers:

“Can7cle of the Turning” (“My Soul Cries Out”)

“For Everyone Born” “Will You Come and Follow Me?” (“The Summons”)

You will be drawn into these hymns by the manner in which Tom Trenney shares his passion as a

pastoral musician, composer, conductor, organist, pianist, and teacher. This will be an evening of great music and profound spiritual renewal.

If you have been searching for a small group, now is

the time to jump in and be a part of a new group. The

church is gathering people who are interested to join

together with others in fellowship, study, prayer and

growth. A day-time group has just recently started. We are now looking for people who

would be interested in a Sunday evening group.

There are now over nine small groups in existence. The people who are part of

them talk about the support and guidance they get from the relationships they have

established in the groups.

A new group will begin with the study of The Good and Beautiful God by James

Bryan Smith. If you are interested in joining, please sign the list at the Kiosk or sign up

online.

Now is the time to give this a try!
