SEMINAR DIARY FROM FELLOW

Diary of Karla Yael Herrera Morales, MD Instituto Nacional de Cardiologia Ignacio Chavez, Mexico City, Mexico

07.01.-13.01.2018

January 7, Sunday. It is the first day we are in Salzburg, it is very exciting to visit a country so full of

history. The buildings are impressive. It was a long trip from Mexico, but it is worth going through the

restlessness and fatigue to be here. We decided to visit the city by foot and take many photos. The

cold is enough to stop feeling the feet but that does not stop us. We met the modern art museum and

the fortress of Hohensalzburg, we had a delicious hot chocolate and ate some homemade cookies.

After walking several kilometres, we decided to return to the beautiful Schloss Arenberg and rest

before the meeting with the rest of the members of the seminary. The reception was pleasant and we

talked during the dinner to get to know each other.

January 8, Monday. We woke up at 7:00 in the morning feeling that we did not rest, we guess the jet

lag has something to do with it. The seminar began. The introduction to the course was given by Dr.

O'Connor, he briefly explained the dynamics, I think we all felt comfortable. The first talk was

Introduction to Congenital Heart Disease, I really enjoyed it, it was a lot of information in a very short

time but the speaker knew how to summarize it. The group photo was taken, I am not used to this

weather and I was freezing outside. Then we had the Echocardiography in Pediatric Cardiology talk, in

which the importance of pediatric subxiphoid views was highlighted, I found it very useful. The talk of

Multimodality Imaging in CHD brought me new things, they are doing a lot of interesting things at

CHOP, things I didn´t know about, there’s much to learn, maybe one day we’ll be able to do those

things at my country. All the speakers have been really open and empathic to us, as both medical and

non-medical issues, I think that’s an incredible opportunity. At dinner, I was able to meet more people

and finally we ended the day at the Armenian Lounge, with some music from different countries and

a football game, it was really funny.

January 9, Tuesday. We get up early to go to breakfast and have coffee. We greet people from other

parts of the world and sit down to share stories for a short time. We go to the class of 7 and we hear

all kinds of comments that are enriching for everyone. It is the first day that we present case reports

and it was interesting to know what my colleagues do when they do not have all the resources to give

Page 22: CHOP SEMINAR in SALZBURG - Open Medical Institute

the best management to the patient. I am still impressed by the place, it's amazing and so peaceful.

Today we talk about the fetal echocardiogram and how to interrupt pregnancy in different countries.

At the end of the classes, we met to go out for a beer where we sang and danced. It was fun.

January 10, Wednesday. This place is beautiful and silent in the mornings. The weather is cold. We

have learned a lot about the management and evolution of patients with Fontan surgery. All the

doctors are experts in their area and have talked about interesting topics that are relevant to improve

patient prognosis. It is interesting the diversity of cultures that exists among all of us here, that allows

us to know the different ways to make use of resources. We finished the classes early and had the

afternoon free. We went to see the beautiful landscapes that Austria has and its limits with Germany.

We take many photos and contemplate one of the best sunsets we have seen. We ate German

sausages and we had hot wine. The cold is still bearable while you have more than two jackets on top.

January 11, Thursday. Yesterday we rested more than other days. I think jet lag is gone. Breakfast is

always a good time to talk about what we did a previous day. Today is the day of case reports and

some of us are nervous about presenting them. We have had very good sessions and discussions on

each topic. The time for lunch arrives and we had time to walk around feeling cooler than other days.

We found a very nice restaurant to eat hamburgers and drink beer. We chatted with some new friends

and had a good time. I like to be able to walk beside the river at night and see the mist surrounding

the castles. We had the opportunity to listen to a concert with some of the best musicians of the music

university of Vienna, it was a unique experience. We went as a group to listen to rock at a bar in

Salzburg and to drink beer with the faculty. It was a great night and surely tomorrow we will be tired

and sleepless but it was worth it.

SEMINAR DIARY FROM FELLOW

Diary of Anna Ankudovich, MD Republican Scientific and Practical Center of Pediatric Surgery, Minsk, Belarus

07.01.-13.01.2018

7 January, Sunday evening. That was a long and a little bit nervous way to Salzburg. It is my first time

here at OMI and honestly, I even do not know what to expect. But after the greeting speech of the

director of the course, I absolutely calmed down. Also due to the welcome dinner I got an opportunity

to meet other members and share my impressions. The atmosphere of the cardiology seminar seems

to be very cordial :)

8 January, Monday. The first seminar day started with a pre-seminar test. When you see the letters

t.e.s.t, at least you take a thought. But in this case, it is more helpful than frightening. This test directs

you, helps you to focus and motivates you to search for answers during the lectures. Today all topics

were some kind of introductions to pediatric cardiology, diagnostic techniques and treatment. I was

so happy to realize that we mostly had the same course of developing pediatric cardiology and cardio

surgery in Belarus. Great thanks to the faculty for the free atmosphere and open conversation and not

just only lectures day!

9 January, Tuesday. This morning didn’t start with coffee, but a repetition of my case presentation,

because today the first part of our group took part in a workshop. After the lectures seventeen fellows

have presented very interesting cases and the difficulties were discussed by Faculty and Fellows. I have

also shared our experience in care and treatment of children with coarctations undiagnosed on time

with a doctor from Mongolia. Throughout the day we had a lot of questions and conversations so I

have learnt a lot about how the system works outside Belarus. Later that day, we had a short

teambuilding session, which was amazing! Different people from different countries easily speak and

communicate in one language and have so much in common (including singing in karaoke)! P.S. Don’t

be afraid of anything, both: speaking and singing! :)

Page 24: CHOP SEMINAR in SALZBURG - Open Medical Institute

10 January, Wednesday. Today we have studied hard. I would say that all topics of the lectures rise

acute problems of pediatric cardiology and are very useful especially for young specialists. But I want

to highlight the lectures of Professor Dori. His lecture about “Lymphatic Flow Issues in Patients with

CHD” explains almost everything we face in practice with children after hemodynamic corrections

(their number increased in the last few years in our center). I even can’t catch a moment to answer a

question and he already gives an answer. Thanks a lot!

Then we had a free afternoon and ten of us had a trip to the Bavarian Mountains together. Oh, I wish

I could show you pictures of us! In the evening we visited a Marble room in Mirabell Palace, where

Mozart played his first concert and listened to classics. Now I feel a little bit tired after such a great

program but it was absolutely worth it to spend one free day like this to feel the atmosphere of Austria

also!

11 January, Thursday. That was the 4th day of the seminar, it was split into two parts: lectures and

case reports. Lecture of Professor Michael Quartermain about “Echocardiography for Coronary

Arteries in HD” was a real workshop! Many fellows, who presented examples, had non-ordinary

anatomy for everyday practice so I have learnt some “tricks” how to catch the best sweeps. In my

country heart transplantations of children is not widely spread and we have just a few cases, so

Professor O’Connors´ lecture helped me to understand some very important nuances, that I want to

discuss with my senior colleagues. For me the most challenging part of cardiology is arrhythmology

and I appreciate Professor Iyer´s lecture, because this lecture was very useful for me and I am strongly

motivated to deepen my knowledge in this specific area. In the evening, we had a lovely chamber

concert in the Grand Hall of Schloss Arenberg. This young trio was from the Mozarteum (University of

Salzburg), but they have already become real virtuosos! Afterwards almost all of us including the

Faculty went out to have conversations in an informal atmosphere and we have talked about almost

everything. I think everybody has enjoyed this evening.

Without any doubts, OMI means medical education without borders!

This was a disparate experience in my practice.
