    world o ftness. O course, we did have a

    close look at all the technological aspects

    that high-tech gymnasiums and workout-

    QPlaying a physically exhausting sport like

    badminton, how would you define

    fitness?

    AFor a sport like badminton, every portion your

    body must be fit and your mental fitness must

    be such that even ater the match, you still eel like

    you can go on playing. That's fitness or me.

    QWhat kind of equipment forms a part of

    your regular fitness schedule?

    AMy coaches taught me that to play badminton

    regularly, you need patience and need to

    workout or all seven days o the week with fitness

    exercises on the court, on the track, and with

    weights. I also undertake extensive cardio exercises.

    But overall, I ollow a multiarious fitness training

    schedule.

    QWhat kind of equipment/fitness

    regime did you follow when you had just

    started out?

    AInitially, my fitness schedules were shorter,

    similar to that o a cross country runner,

    comprising weights, running exercises, etc. But

    eventually, it became more rigorous and I now work

    out or at least 3 to 4 hours a day.

    QHow beneficial is equipment based

    training? How much has it advanced over

    the years?

    AEquipment has changed. Initially I trained with

    manual equipment, while now it is driven by

    electric energy. But I still have to regulate the

    training over time.

    QHow do you ensure that you dont over

    burn yourself with too much exercise?

    AThat does happens, I have a tendency to get

    carried away. So my coaches always advise me

    not to work out too much and go overboard.

    Saina Nehwal is one o the sports persons

    in the country who has made sure that she

    has carried the name o her sports along

    with her. She took up to playing badminton

    at the age o 8. She won her irst National

    Junior Champion in the year 2004, and

    retained the title in 2005 as well. Her steady

    and consistent perormance in all the major

    Badminton tournaments in the world is highly

    commendable. At 20, she has the distinct o

    being the irst Indian sports woman to enter

    the Quarter Finals or Badminton at the 2008

    Beijing Olympics. She was rewarded with an

    Arjuna award in August, 2009.

    QDuring a major injury, what type of

    fitness cycle do you follow to ensure

    that you recovery is faster and you can still

    be in form when you play again?

    ATouch wood, I never had any major injuries

    apart rom a shoulder sprain, and that too

    because o a jerk. I some such untoward incident

    happens, we use the able guidance o an expert

    physiotherapist.

    QHow much importance do you give your

    diet, keeping your fitness regime in

    mind?

    ADiets are uel that runs your body. You need to

    ollow a disciplined liestyle. I enjoy every type

    o ood, but not too much oily or ried ood.

    QThe right footwear is obviously vital.

    How do you pick the right footwear to

    help you perform better?

    AThe right shoes are extremely important. As

    per my experts' advice, I've changed the inner

    shape o my shoes. Some amendments with the

    heel base and toes help the shoes fit better and

    eel better to play with.

    QHow do you balance your game, your

    fitness, and rest time given your busy

    playing schedules?

    AMy age is my biggest strength. With the apt

    guidance o my coaches and keen eyes o my

    parents, I can handle my proessional lie quite

    easily.

    QWhat aspects of being fit should

    budding sportpersons keep in mind?

    AA budding sportsperson should be ocused

    and disciplined. Stick to a restricted and strict

    diet. And never do anything that your mind or

    conscience does permit you to do.

    lexible wrist movements, strong calves,

    and proper oot movements to ensure less

    injury while playing. Speciic badminton

    itness involves strengthening o the wrist,

    elbows, shoulders, neck, chest, abdomen,

    back, thighs, knees and ankles. To keep

    the interest alive in the game, one should

    practice variations in the itness training.

    Hailing rom a sports background, Robin

    Uthappa has the distinction o being

    one o the ew players in the Indian

    cricket team to have played in every

    department o the game. He's played the

    game as a right-handed batsman,

    a right-arm medium pace bowler,

    and as a standby wicket-keeper.

    He has done it all. With all this

    experience at the highest level,

    he knows what type o physical

    ftness each role demands.

    From dawning the Indian team

    cap to the IPL, he is one o the

    ew cricketers who have not

    been out o commission with

    a major injury. He joins us in

    conversation and talks about his

    ftness regime:

    GETTING THE BASICSRIGHT

    Robin equates ftness to sel

    confdence. He asserts, "For me, it not

    only helps in improving my physical

    state, but also helps in improving my

    state o mind." Following a basic routine

    o dumbbells, barbells, medicine balls

    and Swiss balls or both strength and

    exibility training, it serves as an addition

    to the basic weight training regime that he

    started as a budding cricketer. When asked

    about managing his hectic playing schedules,

    especially when it involves a lot o travelling

    and playing continuously, he positively

    states, "I play cricket or the love

    o it. I train or the love o it. So

    managing this is not a chore or me

    at all".

    MOVING AHEAD ON THEFITNESS PATHOnce settled as a sportsperson, it gets just as

    harder to maintain your ftness levels. And once

    you start playing or the country, your ftness

    regime constantly needs to change depending

    on your requirements. But or a less physically

    exerting sport like cricket, you don't really need

    a rigorous workout schedule. Robin says, "In my

    opinion, all you need to do is lots o ree weights

    and body weight training. I don't believe that

    you need too much equipment. Just the bare

    necessary equipment would do. I any youngster

    wants to be called ft, he must be able to do

    his body weight exercises very easily. Thats the

    most basic ftness requirement or any budding

    sportsperson." But he is also cautions and

    conscious not to over burn himsel with a hectic

    ftness regime. "I think it's most important to have

    a good trainer who understands your personality

    and sets a program accordingly. Training should

    be approached on the whole and not just in the

    view o having a good body".

    RECUPERATING AND EATING RIGHTInjuries are an indispensible part o a hectic

    playing schedule, but Robin has been one o

    the lucky ew who haven't had a brush with any

    major ailments. "Thankully, I've not had any major

    injuries, but I do believe that when an athlete is

    injured, one must spend a lot o time visualizing

    his or her sport and their skills. The ftness cycle

    would depend on the kind o injury the athlete

    has." He also makes sure that he eats right.

    "When I'm playing tournaments, I dont ollow

    any diet, but in my o season, I do ollow a diet.

    Sometimes, to ollow

    a diet while playing

    a tournament can be

    stressul and I dont

    like added stress while

    playing."

    FOOD FOR YOURSOLEIn conclusion, Robin

    reminds us o his role

    What are Swiss balls andmedicine balls?A Swiss ball is an exercise ball illed with air,

    which is made o sot elastic PVC. The ball is

    14 to 34 inches in diameter, and is a popular

    prop or stretching exercises. You can

    change the air pressure by either removing

    a valve stem or ill the air and delate it as

    needed. The basic aim o the ball is to create

    instability to lex your muscles to maintain

    associated more with glamour than with health

    and saety, but the balance is now slowly shiting.

    Most glamour role models and sports persons are

    now endorsing physical ftness that considers both

    your physical and mental well being.

    HEALTH AND FITNESSMickey believes that health is as important as

    ftness. "Fitness to me is very primary, while health

    is paramount. Fitness is strength, stamina, agility,

    tone and exibility, and health is excellence o

    lie and living. I believe health is the pinnacle o

    MOTIVATION FOR FITNESSThere is a constant change in the way ftness is

    viewed by people, and several celebrities train

    with with Mickey. So is being ft and looking

    good the same? "I personally think ft and healthy

    people look good anyway. Just good eatures

    with zero health and ftness ails to convey

    vibrancy. There are no short cuts to ftness.

    Discipline, a positive attitude and regularity are

    the keys. A healthy and a ft mind translates into

    a healthy body," he says. But sel motivation is

    most important or being consistent and true to

    your ftness regime. "I stretch, do my postures,

    I meditate and I stimulate my entire body with

    these orms o exercises. Breathing and meditation

    are part o my lie", says Mickey, adding, "A healthy

    body and mind are the prime motivators and can

    be an inspiring orce."

    EATING RIGHTDiet and hydration orm a crucial part o any

    ftness regime. I is important to eat right to be

    and look healthy. "Food inuences our thought

    processes and attitudes. Food, i incorporated

    well, can be stimulating. Energy-giving ood can

    alleviate stress and boost immunity. Diet is an

    important actor that contributes to body and

    mind wellness. Eating the right ood at the right

    time is vital. Any ood in its natural orm is ideal,

    like ruits, raw salads, sprouts, nuts, seeds, herbs,

    etc." But with the quality o ood not being as

    nutritious as beore, supplements have become a

    rage nowadays.

    Mickey adds on a cautious note, "Sensible

    supplementation is the need o the hour. I

    supplementation is done under supervision and

    wisely, it can be a boon."

    TECHNOLOGY AND TRAININGTechnology has dradtically changed ftness, not

    just in terms o better and injury-ree equipment,

    but it has had a dramatic impact in the felds

    o diagnosis and treatment o muscle-related

    ailments. "Technology can be used prudently in

    many ways or assessment and diagnosis, and in

    acilitating workouts. But you need to know on

    a personal level, how much is too much," Mickey

    says. "Every human being, when subjected to time,

    motion, mass, etc is vulnerable to stress. It is very

    important to take care. One set back is enough

    and the whole body can go or a toss," he adds.

    "When you exercise with love or yoursel,

    or recreation, you can never harm yoursel. For

    example, you can never over eat ruits, but, it is

    possible to over eat your rench ries or burgers,"

    Mickey explains. And that brings us to what

    Mickey does best - holistic healing. "Holistic health

    is a composite, multi-pronged approach towards

    health or inner well being and to regulate

    disorder to make lie and living more meaningul

    and purposeul. It helps to enhance physical

    abilities and to bring overall ocus in everyday

    walks o lie. This can be achieved through proper

    integration o practises like corrective breathing,

    meditation, yoga, regular exercise, diet, prayers,

    attitude, rest and sleep," says Mickey. But can you

    combine a holistic workout with equipment? "I

    done under supervision, both can be combined.

    The use o machines must be prudent, and do not

    get dependent on them. Free-hand exercises are

    imaginative and creative and make the work out

    complete."

    With technology pushing the world o ftness

    training and nutrition orwards, most people are

    now waking up to the idea o living healthy. So i

    you've been thinking o hitting the gym yoursel

    but dont know where to start, Karuna Waghmare's

    advice can help you get started. "It is advisable

    or basic users to start with strength training on

    machines, because machines oer controlled

    movements and you know which muscles you are

    targeting. Advanced users can experiment with

    their body weight with exercises like push ups and

    pull ups; these can be done only i you have low

    percent o body at. They look easy, but they are

    di cult," she says.

    KNOWING THE BASICS"The human body is basically made to

    exercise, so you can use equipment or your

    own body weight or exercise. There are three

    components to exercise - exercises to enhance

    exibility o your muscles, cardio vascular

    exercise and strengthening exercise.

    So i you want to train yoursel

    or exibility, yoga is the best

    option. You can make your

    heart stronger rom any

    running activity or by

    using treadmills.

    For strength

    training, you

    can use

    your own body weight or you can use equipment

    like Smith machines or leg press," Karuna

    explains.

    IS EQUIPMENT FREE TRAININGFOR YOU?Being a yoga expert, the very mention o the

    word lights up Karuna's ace, but she adds that

    yoga is not really or everyone. "Yoga is very

    sacred. Unless your mind, body and soul are

    not ready to perorm, you cannot do yoga. It

    is di cult to achieve or people who are not

    willing to ground themselves or who have too

    much body at to be exible.

    But all is not lost or them,"

    she asserts, "You can use

    props, and they dont

    use machines." But how

    would props help? She

    explains, "Props are like

    toys or a kid. They help

    to ground people who fnd it

    di cult to start. For example,

    breathing exercises begin

    with sitting in sukhasan (cross

    legged position), in which all

    are not comortable. So you

    can use chairs instead."

    THE TECH ANGLEHigh stress levels and

    erratic working schedules

    coupled with a poor diet

    can add to your ftness

    woes. Technology has

    advanced drastically in the

    more part o our daily lives. But it's important to

    be responsible enough to realize when useulness

    turns to dependence. Addiction o any kind is

    unwarranted, be it alcohol or your cellular phone.

    THE GADGET RUSHGadgets like PSPs, iPods, Blackberrys, and laptops

    are today treated more like toys, rather than

    utilities. With gadgets getting more accessible,

    it does contribute to our stress levels as well.

    Clinical psychologist Sonali Gupta agrees. "With

    companies giving people Blackberrys and other

    such phones, people have to be accessible 24/7.

    Since you are accessible all the time, i you get

    mails even at 11 in the night, you are expected

    to reply. A ew years ago, you would check mail

    at specifc times and be expected to reply only

    the next morning."

    It is also true that with technologies like cloud

    computing and other Internet based utilities, you

    can work anywhere and anytime. She goes on

    to add, "With laptops and inormation available

    everywhere through the Internet, a lot work

    gets carried back home. Even when people all

    sick, they might still be working rom hospitals.

    People go on holidays with their cell phones

    and their laptops, and with Wi-Fi available

    everywhere, right rom the airports to the coee

    shop, they're working all the time."

    CHILD'S PLAYChildren are the most prone to being addicted to

    any orm o technology, be it games, the Internet,

    television or cell phones. Kids learn to operate

    these devices airly quickly and have a tendency

    to be attracted and eventually addicted to it i

    due diligence and boundaries are not exercised.

    Sonali reiterates this point. "With children, a lot

    depends on how parents monitor a child and

    how much they are given use o technology. I

    you let a seven-year-old carry a cell phone to

    school, it is too early".

    "A lot depends on the kind o parental

    monitoring, per se, on what kind o games they

    play and what they see on television. Yes, it is a

    lot harder today, especially i the child has access

    to Internet; they have access to all kinds o sites.

    I parents substitute TV or video games as a

    nanny, then it is a problem."

    THE INTERNET The Internet has been a revelation or every

    individual, company and proession. Therapists

    dont want to be let behind, and Sonali is no

    dierent. She says, "The Internet has been one

    o the greatest advantages. It makes it possible

    to provide counseling to people who are in

    dierent cities or countries. It helps especially

    i the person has moved out to a culturally

    dierent location; his problem can be better

    solved by a psychologist in his home town, who

    has a better understanding o his environment.

    In some context, it also helps to come up with

    alternative techniques or relaxation. Cell phones,

    in particular, are most benefcially in times o

    emergencies."

    WARNING SIGNSI the alarming number o suicide cases being

    reported is anything to go by, it means people

    dont really pay too much attention to their

    mental health and psychological wellbeing. I

    you are one o those people, and fnd yoursel

    leaning towards emotional unrest, or i you're

    unable to handle a situation with due tact, it is

    time to seek a therapist's help.

    But at what point should someone ideally turn

    to a psychologist? Sonali explains, "I a person

    has been coping with stress or long periods

    o time or i the problems have continued or a

    long period o time, they try to resolve it on their

    own. I they eel they have tried enough and eel

    there is no way out, it's time to get open to the

    idea o going to a therapist. It may be too late

    by then, but then again, not too many people

    are even open to the idea o therapy. They argue

    that they are not mad and dont need medical

    assistance or their state o mind. Therapists

    or psychologists dont give out medication; it's

    the psychiatrists who do. Maybe all you need

    is a dierent perspective as a solution to your

    problems."

    do you manage it with your busy

    schedule?

    AFitness is something that you take time out

    or. Just like your other daily routines that

    include brushing your teeth, taking a shower or

    combing your hair, even fitness needs to become

    part o your liestyle. It should not remain

    something that you do exclusively just once

    in a while.

    QDoes the use of fitness equipment

    prove to be more fruitful than floor

    exercises?

    AFor a woman who works out, equipment is

    not all that necessary. She can complete her

    workout with the help o ree weights. It works

    fine or them, whereas in the case o men, it is

    more important to use equipment, especially i

    their fitness activity is centered around shaping

    their bodies and getting a kind o definition that

    they normally require. So I eel that it is more

    important to men.

    QHave you used gym equipment in

    the past and what are the results of

    using these?

    AYes, I make use o a lot o equipment. The

    results normally vary, since I keep changing

    my fitness regime. Boredom is the major cause o

    this change or me. So I like to change and add

    variety in my routines so as to shock my body into

    doing something diferent.

    QHow important is control of diet for

    you?

    ADiet is the most important actor. I read this

    book that said that 30% o your physical

    well being is controlled by the act that you

    exercise, whereas 70% is controlled by what you

    eat. So diet is everything. When you exercise, its a

    45 minute to one hour process, whereas eating is

    something you do all day long. You need to make

    sure that youre treating your body well.

    QHow do you manage to balance your

    diet even when youre traveling

    continuously?

    AIt does get di cult when you travel and

    youre out o the house. But I try to carry my

    own ood along with me i its possible.

    QWhat inspired you to take up fitness

    seriously?

    AI started working out when I was in the 11th

    grade. That was mainly to lose weight and

    to become thinner and look nicer. But fitness

    takes a completely diferent turn when you join

    the film industry as an actor. It is something that

    reaches into everyones lie.

    QDo you make use of applications and

    websites to help you with your fitness

    schedule?

    ANo. I was once introduced to a website

    called Caloriecount.com. I ound it only to

    be a helpul indication o how much you consume.

    It is similar to writing down your expenses or the

    day, so as to know how much money you have

    spent. Its more like a cumulative o what youre

    putting into your body, but dont realize or take

    stock o. But then I dont think that its all that

    efective. You can do it or something like your

    expenses, but when you start doing that with

    your ood, then it becomes quite a pain.

    WHAT IS NSD POWERBALL?NSD Powerball is a hand gyroscope, which oers

    a rotating mechanism on a universally mounted

    spinning wheel that can spin in any direction with

    little resistance. It helps you tone your fngers

    and hand, wrist, orearms, biceps and triceps with

    its rotary motion. All you need is to use the right

    technique. The NSD Powerball is available in 9

    variants that you can pick rom depending on the

    HOW DOES IT WORK?All the NSD Powerball variants come with a chord

    that must be wound around the track made on

    the ball, rom the base. I you have the ball that

    has a Digital Speed Meter attached, turn it on.

    Yank the chord in a single motion to set the rotor

    in motion. You will see the lights on the ball come

    on. Start rotating your writs in the direction o the

    ball. Just use your wrists to change the direction.

    Your muscles will take some time to get used to the

    motion. Once the ball is set in motion and it catches

    so you will have to ensure that you have a frm grip

    ABOUT THEDIGITAL SPEEDMETER

    The digital speed meter

    has three modes that

    Session-wise highest speed at which the rotor2.

    rotated, in meters.

    The third mode determines your physical3.

    strength. It counts the number o revolutions

    The digital speed meter is battery-operated and

    comes with all NSD Powerball Pro versions. You can

    however get a digital speed meter as an additional

    accessory. I you decide to move to a dierent

    model, you can just plug it out o your old ball and

    place it in to the new one.

    WHEN TO USE?The Powerball is perect or anyone who wants

    to develop their arm muscles. But you should

    be cautious not to over do it. For beginners, a

    maximum exercise o 2-3 minutes per hand is

    su cient. You can increase the time gradually.

    For the best results, use it between 6000-8000

    rpm or a period o about 7 minutes daily. Also, it

    is not recommended or people below the age o

    15. Kids in the age bracket o12-14years may use it

    with supervision. I you are unable to set the rotor

    in motion, check your technique. Otherwise, you

    can opt or the electric starter called Eezi, which

    can also run on batteries. This utility will start your

    gyroscope each time with relative ease. The starter

    is available in blue and amber colors.

    USING YOUR OWN BODY WEIGHT FOREXERCISINGOnce you are in complete control o your regime,

    you can start doing exercises using your own body

    weight. The next step is to get more equipments to

    your training cycle. Go to 'Fitness' tab, and click the

    'Fitness Training' button. Select a physical exercise

    rom the 'Training activities' panel on the let o the
