A PASTORAL WORD

May 2015 How is your Easter celebration? No, this is not my April article. Easter has a simple truth. As great as the first Easter was, those who were there did not begin to experience the fullness of the joy and power until weeks after the Resurrection. It was weeks before they were overwhelmed by the power of the Holy Spirit. It is safe to say that it took a while for the disciples and others to fully become Easter people.

God continued to give the disciples and the world amazing displays of grace. That has been true for us as well. There have been countless personal moments where I have witnessed the blessing of resurrection impact lives in the congregation. We had an overwhelming First Fruits and Announcement Sunday. (see chart below) This month we are confirming new young disciples and launching new ministries such as grief support and mission.

Easter is continuing to reveal itself as new life, new ministries and a new future unfolds before us. I pray your Easter joy grows in the days ahead. The power of the resurrection of Jesus continued to move in the lives of his disciples and bless them. That is our Easter truth. He is resurrected now and comes so you and I, and the entire world will know abundant and eternal life. Celebrate Easter by joining in our worship and the expanding ministry of May. Let Easter continue to shape us, define us and equip us to move out into the future with the confidence of those who already know victory is ours. In Christ, Pastor Rick

MISSION

If you were here on Easter you heard Rick preach about a fantastic new program we are offering. This program is called Getting Ahead in a Just-Getting’-By World. Here is more information on Getting Ahead: Getting Ahead is a way for people to investigate or examine the impact that poverty has on them and their community. It also helps people who are near or in poverty to stabilize their living situations and build resources.

At Clarkston UMC we recognize the assets that every individual brings to the table and would like the participants (Investigators) to help teach us what it is like to live in poverty in our community so that we can better meet the needs of those in Clarkston who are living near or in poverty.

Getting Ahead can help a person to: A. Identify and solve problems in a safe but challenging group-learning experience B. Do a self-assessment of his/her own resources C. Develop a plan, future story

What Happens in Getting Ahead: A. A group of 6-12 people meets with the facilitators for 16 workshop meetings B. Each workshop takes three hours C. There will be no lecturing, no teaching; the “Investigator” method will be used D. The Investigators are paid for their work

Getting Ahead is different because: A. Investigators are seen as problem solvers; their information and ideas are needed B. No one decides anything for the Investigators; no one will tell them what to do C. No one will do for Investigators what they can do for themselves D. No one will “teach”, the Investigators have to do the learning.

Ways You Can Help: A. Pray for the Investigators and Facilitators during the process B. Sign-Up to help provide dinner one evening C. Attend the Getting Ahead graduation D. Create relationships with the Investigators and show them the Biblical Hospitality we hold as a Core Value

For more information or to volunteer to help, contact Mary Gladstone-Highland at [email protected]

WORSHIP

We have a variety of exciting and important events coming up in worship! On May 3rd, we will celebrate Confirmation with our confirmands, their families, and our whole church family. May 10th will be Bible Sunday when we present Bibles to our amazing second graders who are ready to dive in and read God's word! On Sunday, May 17th don't miss "Music Sunday" as our Chancel Choir and Jubilation Bells along with our accomplished music staff present a wonderful message; Stories of Him, Hymn Stories. This all culminates in Pentecost, which is Sunday, May 24th. If you are in town for Memorial Day weekend, you will not want to miss this Sunday! The Sharon Thomas Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established in order to provide scholarships for school-aged children and youth to attend music amps, conferences, worships, take music lessons or further study of worship arts. For further information or to apply, please contact Angie Scheu via email at [email protected] or phone (248) 625-1611 ext. 228. Through this scholarship opportunity, we will continue to honor and continue the ministry of our dear friend and former Director Sharon Thomas. You can view information about Sharon and this scholarship fund in more detail on the web at www.clarkstonumc.org/musicfund.html. A special congratulations and note of thanks to Judy Mellen and the Angelus Bells! Angelus Bells are our youngest group of bell ringers starting as young as second grade. They played in worship for the last time this spring on April 19th and did a beautiful job. These young ladies have worked very hard and developed their music reading skills since September and we are all very, very proud of them! A huge congrats also goes to the Sign Choir who were awesome this year under the wonderful direction of Mary Gladstone-Highland. They finished up for the spring and we are very proud of all their work and their creative spirit in worship! Thanks as well to all of our Cherub Choir and Karen Girard who is their director. Their sweet, angelic voices were truly a perfect way to lead us into worship throughout this year!

THANK YOU

Dear Church Family, Thank you for all of your support and donations for my Confirmation Kingdom Project of selling Capital Campaign T-shirts. I raised $773 for Camp B to use in assisting the kids at Bridgewater Apartments. Thanks again for all your help! Love, Emma Borowski A heartfelt thank you goes out to the Angels In Training who collected and packed lunches for 25 families to eat during Spring Break! Those lunches were very important for children who usually receive free and reduced lunches at school. Thank you for all the hardwork!

Thank you to Bill Ballew, Karen Girard, Martha Manting and Charlie Wellman for being our parent companion to our confirmation class this year. We couldn’t have done it without them! Their guidance and presence was a wonderful blessing. Thank you for serving our confirmation breakfast, and to all the high school youth parents who provided breakfast casseroles! Thank you to all twenty-four of our Journey Companions who were wonderful mentors to our kids this whole year. Thank you to our confirmands for taking this journey. They are a blessing. We are blessed for the opportunity to work with them! Pastor Amy and Annette Siminski

Building Committee The initial results from the Capital Campaign have been fabulous! We celebrate the generosity and enthusiasm of our church family and thank you for your commitment and prayers for our Ministry Expansion. The Building Committee will start to review detailed designs using the Capital Campaign funds to generate architecture plans to present to the congregation for approval. Work will continue on pre-construction planning, zoning approvals, and securing mortgage funding. We look forward to a busy Spring and will provide regular updates along the way. We ask for your continued prayers as we work to bring our conceptual views to fruition.

LAY LEADER REFLECTIONS MAY 2015 The Hope of May Enthusiastically we greet the glorious month of May! And we can’t help but smile at the daffodils and hyacinths which have magically, faithfully, popped out. Sometimes I feel like God has given them as a secret gift of love to me alone. He is telling me that hope abounds each day as I live in the promise of Resurrection Sunday, as I live in faith. May brings the freedom to dig our hands into the soil, to feel the cool earth slip through our fingers as we lose ourselves in caring for His creation – by nurturing plants and yards, cleaning garden space, by planting seeds in hope of healthy growth. The physical and emotional energy expended can leave me awash in thanksgiving, as I find hope, a new calm in balancing burdens borne. This is free therapy time! God gives us a remarkable opportunity to be co-creators with him in this dance. We need his rain, sunshine and warmth and he needs us to tend the earth responsibly as we were commissioned in Genesis. May brings plans for our annual Adult Righteous Mission. This June we will give the gift of hope to the people at Hope Warming Center in Pontiac as we work together to improve and enhance its grounds and facilities, to connect with the homeless who so desperately need the relief, encouragement and direction that the Center offers. Jeff Smolek, Jim Degen, Dave Kanous, Rob Hoff and others are spending much time and talent in organizing this truly tremendous event! May brings Bible Sunday, the exciting day when each 2nd grader receives a Bible from a special Bible Buddy. Through family, Sunday School and VBS these children have been exposed to the Bible and are learning its stories. It is thrilling that the church connects with its children through this gift! However, this Bible is not just for 2nd graders. It is for their families and for all of us. My prayer is that each family treat this holy gift with reverence, that they spend time with their children in reading the stories and lessons, learning together to question, to understand and to hope and trust in His Word of boundless love. Flamingos to Migrate to CUMC this Spring! Please support our Senior Youth as they continue their fundraising efforts for their mission trip to Costa Rica! The fundraiser is a “flamingo flocking”. WHAT is a flamingo flocking? It’s where an individual pays a donation for our youth to place a flock of flamingos on a friend’s (victim’s) yard. The flamingos will roost in the targeted friend’s yard for a day. At this point the flamingo-ed friend has the opportunity to “hire” by donation our youth to help the flamingos migrate to another friends yard, and so on. Don’t despair: you can avoid a flocking with some Anti-Flocking Insurance. This guarantees that no flock of flamingos will roost on your lawn as they migrate around the area. The cost for this insurance requires a small premium at least $10. Youth will be taking your orders, May 3 and 10, or you can find a slip in the office to place your order. For more information contact Mary Gladstone-Highland at [email protected]

This year projects include: replacing a fence, removing dead trees and stumps, tree trimming, building a dumpster enclosure, shed and pavilion, gardening and landscaping, painting, praying, teaching, and connecting people to God.

There is a role for everyone who would like to participate, including parents with young children. Once again, CUMC will be holding Kid's Camp for the children of ARM participants, on Wednesday, June 17th. With an abbreviated schedule for Kid’s Camp parents, it is a great way for the kids to have fun together, and the parents to serve.
