FROM PASTOR RICK

Abundance

It is the season of Abundance. This fall we proclaim that the time of fear, limitation, scarcity and the negative is defeated. We call it the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This year and for some time to come, we will grow together and witness to the hope of Abundance that comes from the name of Jesus Christ. Here are some ways abundance is emerging in our ministry.

Worship You might not be surprised that we have focused a lot on worship for this fall. What you need to know is the attention our Sunday morning worship is getting. All who are part of worship planning and leadership are committed to make every worship service both meaningful and memorable. We are not tied to a form of worship as much as a commitment for every worship to have as primary the praise of Christ and to touch our lives in ways that will bless us and the community in the following days. Our youth ministry is gaining a new worship focus every Sunday night. We are also in prayer and discernment about other ways and times we can create worship that blesses increasingly more and more in our larger community. Don’t miss our launching of a new season of worship beginning on September 7th.

Staffing Our ministry is strengthening with the addition of Angie Scheu serving as the Director of our Worship Ministry. Our ministry of care will be so strengthened and blessed as the Rev. Laura Speiran joins us to assist the other clergy and laity to minister to all in times of need. (see article in this newsletter) Welcome them both and consider how you might help them in these vital areas of our ministry.

Finances This summer so much has happened in ministry. However we have had our typical dip in giving to the ministry during these “vacation months”. As we enter the fall, I ask you to share with me in abundance as we give to meet and exceed what is needed for this ministry to thrive. In the past few weeks I have seen the hungry fed, the sick comforted, the grieving embraced, seekers find faith, youth claim their call and the mature find meaning in new ways of serving. I have experienced peace in the midst of conflict, joy in the ordinary and Christ in all. I ask you to give, but even more I invite you to be immersed and embraced in what God is doing in our midst. See you in Worship. Pastor Rick

Building Committee Update The CUMC Building Committee has been busy the past several months! Since approving our architect, we have met every 2 weeks since April in collaborative development to plan for our future ministry needs. The process has been extremely rewarding. The designs are based on: - accessibility throughout the facility - increased space for children, youth and adult programming - dedicated missions area - a multi-purpose room to accommodate large church functions, including meals, community events, mission days, youth events and also double as a worship or athletic area - creation of a new welcoming area, where we will be able to extend radical hospitality in the narthex We would like to take the opportunity to invite you to a "Town Hall Preview", an informational session at 10AM on Sunday, September 7, 14 or 21. The committee encourages you to come hear about our progress and the timeline of activities, preview our initial architectural plans, and hear about the Potential and Possibilities study that Horizons Stewardship will prepare for us. We will meet in the Youth Classroom. Later this Fall, we will introduce the full architecture plans, timing, and capital needs. It is an exciting time in the life of our church. We look forward to continuing to grow in faith, fellowship and outreach and hope you will join us along this journey. Sandy Ballew & Tom Snudden Building Committee Co-Chairs

You can register on line at Active.com or by submitting a registration form (available in the office and on CUMC’s website) to CUMC, attention Annette Siminski.

Children’s Ministry Volunteer Orientation is Thursday, August 28 at 7pm in the Parlor. If you are helping with Sunday school or Angels this year, please attend this brief meeting to collect your teaching materials and annual Sunday school calendar, and enjoy some dessert with your fellow teachers.

No Sunday School on August 31st. Your children are encouraged to attend worship service. Quiet activities will be available in the Narthex.

Sunday School Kick Off & Registration Day is September 7th. Each Sunday school family should have received, among other things, an informational letter, a 2014-15 Universal Registration form, and a volunteer opportunity form in the mail. Please complete all forms and return to the church by September 7th. OR bring all forms on Sunday, Sept. 7th during Sunday School Registration day in Fellowship Hall (9 or 11am). Kids will meet their teachers, do a craft, enjoy a light breakfast and juice, and listen to an overview of the year before going to their classroom while you are in worship service. They may be picked up in their classroom after worship service.

CUMC is having a picnic on September 7th at noon, immediately following worship. Please wear comfy clothes, bring lawn chairs and a side dish or salad to share, and enjoy games, music, a bounce house, and more. Invite a friend!

Bring a Picture of Your Pet Day on September 14th. All Sunday school kids are encouraged to bring a picture of their current, past or future (hoped-for) pet to Children’s Church. We would like to keep the picture for our upstairs bulletin board.

Acolyte training is Wednesday, September 17th at 4:15-5pm. Any child in the 3rd grade or older may serve as an acolyte for worship service. Please return the acolyte form in your registration packet, and have your child attend this brief training (includes snack).

World Communion Sunday is October 5th. Like last year, Sunday school children (Kdg-Lounge 456) will receive a communion lesson from CUMC’s Pastors during Children’s Church in September. Then they will have the opportunity to take

communion during worship with their Sunday school class and parents throughout the year. The first opportunity for the kids to take communion with their class is on World Communion Sunday, Oct. 5th. United Methodists offer communion to children believing it is a means of grace. If you do not want your child to take communion, simply indicate so on your registration form.

Bible Reading Challenge is on! The reading challenge has begun for all children 3rd grade and up. You have until April 31st (extended an extra month) to complete this challenge. Look on the church website for your reading assignments. We will also hand out the assignments in Children’s Church during September.

Looking ahead . . . Trunk or Treat is Sunday, October 26th at 5pm! Dress in your favorite costume and trick or treat from car trunk to car trunk. Stay for a bon fire, hotdogs and s’mores. LAY READER REFLECTIONS

Can you close your eyes and envision yourself leaving home for your first day of school? New notebook and pencil, crayons? It was a simpler time - we didn’t need anything more. But, oh, how good it felt to have a new pair of sturdy shoes! What excitement reigned as my older sister and I tried not to wriggle while Mom skillfully fashioned our hair into two braids. We took off for our three-block walk in our small rural southern Illinois town as if on a cloud, hardly able to contain ourselves at the prospect of joining our friends, already knowing our teachers and fellow classmates because of the size of our community. Anxious for new books to read, for math problems, for maps and music, the world was open for us to explore! The anticipation had grown through the last hot, muggy days of August and we were ready!

That experience can be yours again! It is yours for the taking! The opportunity for the thrill of new books, learning, exploring and growing is right in front of us. Rev. Christine Wyatt, Adult Education Minister, is an avid reader who strives to keep up with vital, curious, spiritually growing adults who want guidance in their faith journey. Over these last 11 years she has offered and taught a myriad of classes in Bible studies, leadership, stewardship, spiritual gifts, social concerns and other areas. Through these, leaders are developed who can live their faith, teach and be in service within and beyond our church community. Christine’s responsibilities have also included small group development, women’s retreat, congregational care, DivorceCare, Adult Library, interfacing with the Finance Office in managing budgets and ordering books and curriculum.

The psalmist (Psalm 25:4) thirsts, “Show me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, . . . “ Christine’s gentle nudges to involve ourselves in classes, grow in discipleship and build relationships are accompanied by prayers that her efforts will culminate in our initiative to do as Jesus directed in Mark 16:15, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.” Immersing ourselves in continual education equips us to reach new disciples as Jesus did with His Twelve.

Christine is a beautiful example of a faithful disciple of Christ as she compassionately and selflessly shares her gifts, with which we have been blessed.

Thank you, Christine!

If you are interested please email Cheryl Kelly at [email protected] and we can send you the video to check out and practice. People seemed to get a kick out of it last year and we had several people ask to join us—so here is your chance!

MISSIONS (CONTINUED)

Your mission should you chose to accept it will be to attend the “Mission Possible” Fundraiser & Auction (formerly known as Sweets & Services). This is an important mission as it is THE major fundraiser for all the mission work done here at CUMC. Here are your details: When: Saturday, Nov 8th, 2014 Time: 6-9pm Where: Fellowship Hall, CUMC This mission includes fabulous food, silent & live auction items and general good fun and mayhem. It is of highest importance that you mark your calendars and show up that night. Stay tuned for updated donation information but most of all we need people to attend and bid on these great items. This message will self destruct in 10 seconds…. Well maybe not. But see you there.

Sunday Night Worship’s last service was held on August 24, 2014. For many years, we have tried to offer a contemporary worship service, in various forms and with various leaders. We have struggled to maintain a consistent level of attendance. We have had a few wonderful, faithful attendees, but our numbers have been quite low this year. It was a difficult decision to end the service. Worship is the way we communicate with God, the way we praise and honor and say thank you. It is an experience that is met with much emotion. Pastors and staff have talked with many regular attenders prior to sending out a letter of explanation to those who have often attended the service. We are grateful for the understanding and commitment to move forward expressed by so many. We never want to make anyone feel disenfranchised, or left out, and we hope that the few faithful attenders will find a home on Sunday mornings. As the worship leadership of this church uses its time, talent and energy to create worship at Clarkston UMC, we will seek to bring the SNW components of relational intimacy, casual feel, and modern music to our current and future worship.

Staff Parish Relations Committee

We are very pleased to announce that on September 1, 2014, Rev. Laura Speiran was hired as Minister of Congregational Care Director for CUMC. Laura comes to us with an extensive background in congregational care ministry. She served at Saline First (Ann Arbor District) as Deacon and Minister of Congregational Care since 2007 when she was commissioned, and also as a layperson on staff at Saline First since 2002. Laura will closely with Pastor Rick, Pastor Amy and the rest of the CUMC

staff in providing pastoral care to our church family - including hospital calls, shut-in visits, new parents, and health ministry just to name a few. Laura and her husband have two grown children - a daughter in college and a son leaving for the Navy this fall. We welcome Laura and her family!

We are also pleased to announce Karen Girard as the new Cherub Choir Music Director, replacing Stephanie Polonkey. Stephanie has taken a full time teaching position with Clarkston Schools and is unable to continue as Cherub Choir Director. Stephanie has done a wonderful job as Cherub Choir Director. While we will certainly miss her, we are blessed to have Karen as our Cherub Choir Director. Karen has been on staff before at CUMC and is well-suited for her new role.
