Dear Friends,

After such a full and heartening November at University Church, the turn toward December seems almost anti-climactic. There was such a display of enthusiasm in the air around the church during the Faith Forward campaign, and so many talented and dedicated people willingly devoted so much time and energy and treasure to the success of the campaign. On behalf of the Session, I want to express my deep appreciation to all the teams and their leaders, to all the volunteers, and to each of you for making the campaign such a positive experience for the church.

There is much yet to do, of course. First Fruits Sunday on December 2 will give us an opportunity to make our first tangible gifts to the three-year commitments we have made. And there is also the matter of the gap between the campaign goal and the pledges we have in hand. But we are confident that we will reach a very positive conclusion of the campaign’s pledging stage in the days ahead. If you have not yet made a commitment, either to the 2013 Operating Budget or to the Faith Forward Campaign, I encourage you to do so as soon as possible. Please let the office know if we can be helpful in providing pledge cards or any information you may need, and let us hear from you soon.

The month of December will bring its own enthusiasm, of course. We hope you are making plans to be present for the Christmas Lessons and Carols service on December 16 and one of the three Christmas Eve services this year, as well as the Advent services that will fill the monthly calendar. Advent is such a rich season of expectation, and we do invite you to engage in it fully.

Finally, I want to say a personal word of gratitude for your care for the Dunhams during these last weeks since Marla’s accident. The thoughtful cards, the wonderful food and the gracious offers and provisions of rides for Marla have all touched our hearts.

November was a month we will always remember with deep gratitude. But we are eager, too, to turn toward these days of Advent and to Christmas beyond. And we are most grateful that we get to share that journey together with this church family, which in recent days has signaled once again just how remarkable and exceptional it truly is. May the hope and promise of Advent stir your hearts in these days, and fill you with wonder and gratitude.

This favorite celebration of the season traces the story of the birth of our Lord through Les-sons from the Old and New Testaments and with favorite music of the season sung by all the choirs of University Church. The stories of the fall from grace in the Garden of Eden, visions of Old Testament prophets, the announcement of the Incarnation by the Angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary, and the birth of Jesus will be inter-spersed with Christmas hymns and carols, including music by Lynn Shaw Bailey, Philip Ledger, Ken Berg, Ralph

Vaughan Williams, Jonathan Willcocks, Mark Hayes and Daniel Pinkham. Soloists Ethan Merklein and Nicholas Osborne will sing the first verse of Once in Royal David’s City, and instrumentalists will include Rose Peifer, flute, Lily McCormick, oboe, and Paul Neebe, trumpet. We join churches around the world in offer-ing this beloved service of scripture and music to celebrate Christ’s birth.

For the past three years, our Haiti mission teams have joined the Haitian people in the celebration of Easter. There is no better place to witness the Resurrection than among people whose spirituality and resilience carry them up through natural disasters and extreme poverty.

During this trip, we will witness the amazing work of our friends and partners in Port-au-Prince, Ldogane, Fondwa and Jacmel and marvel at their many wonderful accomplishments under dire circumstances.

Chelsea McElwee – Chelsey comes to UPC by transfer of

her membership from Clemmons Presbyterian Church. Born

and raised in Clemmons (and at Clemmons Presbyterian

Church), Chelsey is a 2011 graduate of Elon University. She

moved to Chapel Hill after graduation to accept a teaching

position with the Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools and cur-

rently teaches Fourth Grade at McDougle Elementary

School. Chelsey is an active participant in Presbyterian

Women and the Young Adult Group, and in her free time,

she enjoys running.

Bring it! We'll gather at 5 p.m. (no choir tonight) and enjoy dinner together while Charlie Brown reminds us of the real meaning of Christmas. Then, we'll head down Franklin St. to the Varsity Theater to enjoy a longer Christmas movie. Pick up will be back at the Youth Center at 8 p.m.

Sunday, Thursday, December 20: Caroling with Youth Choir. PYC will join voices with the UPC Youth Choir for caroling and dinner. Look for details about where to meet in Kim's weekly email.

Christmas Eve Offering

The Christmas Eve Offering will be received during each service. The monies received from this special offering will

be divided between the Pastor's Discretionary Fund and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund.

4:00 p.m. This service is designed especially for families with children of all ages. See the de-

scription on page 6. The Junior and Children’s Choirs will lead the music.

7:00 p.m. Candlelight Service. The candlelight service at 7:00 p.m. will be more traditional. The Youth Choir will lead the music for this service.

11:00 p.m. Candlelight and Communion. The UPC Chancel Choir will lead the music for the

traditional service at which Communion will be served by intinction.

Remember that the Christmas Joy Offering of the Presbyterian Church (USA) will be received Sun-day, December 23. The offering will bring good news of great joy to the poor in circumstance or spirit.

This special offering provides the opportunity for future leaders of the church, from all racial and eth-nic backgrounds, to pursue and fulfill their dreams through Presbyterian-related education. The offer-ing also assists families of active and retired church workers meet unexpected needs through the Assistance Program of the Board of Pensions.

The Children’s Choir will go Christmas Carol-ing on Sunday, December 16 at 3:00 p.m. at the DuBose Center at The Cedars. After caroling, the children and their families are invited to Jake Bryan’s home for a Caroling Party!

The Junior Choir is going Christmas Caroling on Sunday, December 9. Following their regu-lar rehearsal at the church, the choir will car-pool to Reid Barker’s home to enjoy dinner and then caroling in the Lake Hogan Farms neighborhood.

The Youth Choir and PYC will go caroling on Thursday, December 20 at Carol Woods

Health Center and church members’ homes. Please meet at 5:00 p.m. at Lewis Peel’s home. Afterward, the choir and PYC are invited back to Lewis’s for dinner. We look forward to a wonderful time!

It’s that time of year again. The air is crisp, and the leaves on the trees are changing into their beautiful coats of color. These changes must mean we’ve just had our 9th Annual BBQ and Barn Dance. It was a wonderful evening of family fun. The food was great, as was the music and dance. If you missed it this year, make sure you watch for it in October 2013.

Things usually slow down here a little in the fall, but so far, it’s shaping up to be a busy one. If you are looking for a relaxed place to have your Holiday gathering, take a look at New Hope Camp and Con-ference Center.

Have you ever wanted to be a puppeteer? If so, we have an opportunity for you! We have put to-gether a puppet nativity performance. We need puppeteers to participate in this ministry. Experience is not required. Call Bruce at the camp office at (919) 942-4716 if you think you might be interested.

As you consider possible year-end benevolences along with tax planning, we would ask that you consider a tax-deductible donation to New Hope Camp and Conference Center to help us with the renovation of 60-year old Fleming Hall. Fleming is headquarters for the summer camp program and a favorite host site of many other groups throughout the year. The Season of Advent with Frederick Buechner: Frederick Buechner, Presbyterian minister and acclaimed author, is one of the most widely read and beloved Christian theologians of our time. Buechner’s work has often been praised for its ability to inspire readers to see the grace in their daily lives. Using three chapters from his book Secrets in the Dark: A Life in Ser-mons, this study of Advent themes will be interwoven with scripture and sacred music.

The sermons to be discussed will be: - December 2: “The Birth” - December 9: “Longing for Home” - December 23: “Come and See.”

A number of copies of the book have been ordered and will be made available to class members at the first class. Those with Kindles or Nooks may prefer to download their own copy. Unfortunately, because of the recent copyright (2006), we are unable to make them available free online or print copies.

A Thrill of Hope: The Christmas Story in Word and Art: This three-week study presents the familiar story of Christmas as told in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Each of six scripture passages will be illustrated and inter-preted in the stunning artwork of John August Swanson along with commentary by some of America’s premier Biblical scholars, featuring names such as Dr. Thomas G. Long, Dr. Mi-chael Joseph Brown, Dr. Carol A. Newsom, and more. The study is divided into six 7-minute

chapters, each one featuring a passage of Scripture, commen-tary by the scholars, and a Swanson work of art based on that passage. Included are A Visit (Luke 1:26-38), The Nativity (Luke 2:1-7), The Shepherds (Luke 2:8-20), Epiphany (Matthew 2:1-12), Presentation in the Temple (Luke 2:21-40), and Flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13-15). Two scripture passages will be cov-ered each of three Sundays.

The First Paul: Reclaiming the Radical Visionary Behind the Church’s Conservative Icon: In this class, we will continue reading, study-ing and discussing Paul’s life using M.J. Borg and J.D. Crossan’s book The First Paul (2009). Paul is second

only to Jesus in importance in the birth of Christianity and the author of many books of the New Testament. Paul continues to be a controversial figure in the church. Borg and Crossan “use the best of biblical and historical scholarship to explain the reasons for Paul’s mixed reputation…and his inspiration for radical grace…” and argue that there are “Three Pauls” in the New Testament: The Radical Paul (Pauline letters); The Conservative Paul (the disputed letters); and The Reactionary Paul (inauthentic letters).

In truth, Paul was a remarkable disciple of Christ, faithful to the message of Jesus. Please join us as we learn more of the Apostle Paul.

Feasting on the Word: Feasting on the Word is a resource that incorporates the uniqueness of the award-winning Feast-ing on the Word commentaries to ex-plore one of the weekly Lectionary pas-sages in ways that engage participants in faithful learning and discussion. The lessons provide comprehensive, accessible biblical background for facilitators from four theological perspectives. Beginning with a solid scriptural and theological base, this class invites leaders and learners deeper into the rhythm of the church year. It utilizes a common Bible passage for all learners, making it easy for families or individuals to learn and live out their faith together. Most often, the passage for study is the same text to be used in Sunday worship and offers even more reflection and conversation.

Local Out r each News: IFC Communi ty Ki tchen

Since the mid 80’s, UPC has provided lunch and dinner at the IFC Community Kitchen on the third Thursdays of each month. The Women’s Circles take turns providing lunch. They bring about a dozen loaves of sandwiches to supplement soup or a hot dish. From 9:45 until 11:15 a.m., volunteers cut up fruits and vegetables for salads. From 11:15 a.m. until 1 p.m., they serve usually about 100 guests.

For ten months a year, a coordinator plans the menus, shops for the main dish and other items needed to supplement what-ever is in stock at the Kitchen and recruits members of UPC and friends for the prep and serving crew. From around 4:45 until 6:15 p.m., they work together to prepare the main dish, cut up fruit and vegetables, slice and heat bread, stir up choco-late milk and arrange desserts (day–old cakes, cookies and pies donated by local grocery stores) on platters. From 6:15 until 7 p.m. about 70 guests are served a good hot meal.

Since 1997, Amy Whitley has coordinated chili dinners twice a year in March and October by calling on PYPs (Parents of Young Presbyterians) members. Donations of chili and salad fixings, fruit, dessert (homemade is a special treat!) and milk are dropped off all day long. The prep/serve crew combines all the different containers of chili into one BIG pot to heat while they prepare rice, assemble salads and put out the desserts.

A small portion of your annual pledge to UPC is used to reim-burse main dish purchases. THANK YOU! It would be help-ful to have a list of volunteers on-call for working at the Kitchen (10-1 for lunch or 5-7 for dinner) and running errands (picking up sandwiches and delivering them by 10:30 a.m., doing last minute shopping). It has been suggested that we try something to involve more people. For instance, on the Sun-days before UPC’s night to cook, aluminum pans with instruc-tions to follow a casserole recipe could be handed out with the understanding that the pan with the casserole in it would be delivered to the Kitchen by 5 p.m. on the third Thursday. A dinner coordinator of the month would be welcome for orga-nizing the suggested “multi-pan method” similar to PYPs’ chili nights or for the duties listed above.

Highlights for the Upcoming Term: January 6—February 10

The Faith and Wisdom of Wendell Berry: Wendell Berry is a distinguished author of novels, short fiction, essays and po-etry. He is the recipient of many honors, including the 2010 National Humanities Medal. Berry’s experiences as a farmer from rural Kentucky inform his works, which explore themes such as the relationships of mankind with the Earth and with each other. Whether you are already a Berry enthusiast or have not yet discovered his writings, please join us as we discuss his life, his literature and topics that affect us each day.

Mental Illness, Movies and My Faithful Response: “For nothing will be impossible with God.” (Luke 1:37). This adult education class will describe the most common mental disor-ders and illustrate each with scenes from popular movies. A guest discussant will share his or her personal experience with

the disorder being illustrated. A discussion will focus on how we are called to support individuals and families in our congre-gation and elsewhere who are affected by mental illness.

Building Faithful Virtues in Children: Many of the teach-ings of Jesus are aimed at the health and development of rela-tionships, especially the ways in which we treat “the other.” This class will take a look at how we can encourage virtues such as empathy, conscience, self-control, respect, kindness, tolerance and fairness in our children.

Miss Persia is a delightful, toe-tapping new musical comedy, a cross between Aladdin and My Fair Lady. It's a Disneyesque telling of the classic Book of Esther about one of the greatest heroines in history. In this comedy set in ancient Per-sia, women and Jews were looked down upon, but a Jewish beauty queen made a difference. We look forward to putting on a great show!

Deep and Wide: A Weekly Serv ice of Renewal Tuesday Evenings, 6 :30 - 7 :15 p.m.

Deep and Wide is a weekly gathering held on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-7:15 p.m. in the Sanctuary and other sacred spaces in the church. The services include centering prayer, lectio divina, music, silence and monthly communion. There will also be time for sharing concerns and joys and renewing the deep and wide presence of God in our midst.

This service is a wonderful time to reconnect with the holy and simply be in the pres-ence of God with few distractions and to be open to the Holy Spirit and the stirring of the soul. For more information, please contact the Staff Associate for Education, Heather Ferguson, at [email protected].

There is now bus service for Carolina Meadows residents to attend the 11:00 worship service.

UPPS Working Hard with our Play

Our 86 children who attend UPPS during the week are closing up a fun Fall semester. In just a short amount of time, our stu-dents have learned new routines and created oodles of art-work. They’ve also been busy learning all of the important things that a preschooler needs to know, like figuring out new friendships, putting on their coats and making new connections with books, toys and the world around them. We’re very proud of all the children at UPPS!

Change in UPPS Registration Dates

We’d like to remind you that priority registration for UPC members begins Sunday, January 6 and runs through Sunday, January 20. This year, we will also be accepting applica-tions for our Two-Year-Old class during this period, so please be sure to get your application submitted before January 20!

Go to the church Website at www.upcch.org - In the upper right corner, click the “Login” icon. - On the right of the page, you will see “Not registered? Click here.” Click on “here.” - Fill in your name in the “Real Name” box. We will use this name to verify that indeed you are a UPC member

and eligible to access the directory. - Choose a Login name that you can easily remember; that will be your unique Login for this site. No spaces or

special characters allowed. - Enter your email address. This is required so that your login can be activated. An email address may be used

only once. If your household shares one email address, everyone in the household will need to use the same login and password.

- Choose a password that only you will know. Make a note of the password you choose because it cannot be retrieved by the church staff.

- Re-type the password in the “Verify Password” box. - We do not plan to use the Website’s email feature at this time, so leave the “no” button checked. - Read the Disclaimer and check the box beside “I agree to the above.” - Decipher the security code and type it in the box. If the code is not clear enough, click it to change to another. - When finished, click on the “Complete” button.

After submitting the registration request, you will receive an email at the address you provided stating that your ac-count is inactive and must be approved by an administrator before you can log in. A member of the church staff will verify each registration, so if you register at night or on the weekend, you may not get approval until a staff member reviews your request.

Once the request is approved, you will receive an activation email letting you know that you may now log in using the Login name and Password you submitted. After logging in, the “Become a Member” tab at the lower right of the homepage will become “Members’ Corner.” Click on that tab to access the directory.

University Presbyterian Church is affiliated with The Presbyterian

Church (U.S.A.) and is a Stephen Ministry Congregation. On Sun-

day mornings, worship services are held at 8:30 and 11:00 and

church school for all ages at 9:45 a.m. Children of all ages are wel-

comed and cherished by this congregation. Childcare for infants

through kindergarteners is provided on Sunday mornings by our

paid sitters and parent volunteers.

The sanctuary is wheel-chair accessible. Handicapped parking

spaces are available, and a parking assistant will be available to

help you out of your car. Assistive hearing devices and large-print

bulletins and hymnals are available during worship. Office hours:

Friends of Christ School for Christian Spirituality is currently enrolling participants for the Winter term. The School

finished its inaugural Fall term in November with 58 participants taking Class 1: The Christian Journey as Transformation.

Class 1, a prerequisite to the other three classes, will be offered on Tuesdays, 7—9 p.m. at Amity United Methodist Church

(UMC) and Wednesdays, 1—3 p.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church beginning on January 8 and 9. Orientation sessions

for those interested in finding out more about the school will be held on Thursday, January 3, 7:30—8:30 p.m., and Satur-

day, January 5, 10—11 a.m., both at Amity UMC in Chapel Hill. More information and registration forms may be found on

the school’s website, www.friendsofChristschool.com.

The School is an ecumenical school for spiritual seekers who desire to explore a deeper relationship with God and to discover

the common spiritual path of transformation rooted in the Christian faith and traditions. The purpose of the School is to con-

tribute to the spiritual formation of participants and to supplement what is already offered within our own faith communities.

As Laura Dunham, coordinator of the School, expresses in her book, Path of the Purified Heart, “Despite the myriad of forms,

creeds, doctrines, and belief systems that constitute modern Christianity, the spiritual pathway of transformation still lies at the

heart of our common faith.”

The School offers the opportunity to walk the common Christian path, a “path of the heart,” within an open, inviting commu-

nity. We explore the riches of the Christian spiritual traditions and experience in-depth its core spiritual practices of worship,

reflection on Scripture and prayer.

Four eight-week core classes form the foundational curriculum for the School: The Christian Journey as Transformation, Spiritual

Wisdom and Guidance, Practices for the Journey, and Discernment and Rule of Life.

Registration will be capped at 25 per class. Participants may register online, through our brochure or by contacting

[email protected]. The cost for each class is only $25, and this includes books and materials. Come walk the

path with us!
