A PASTORAL WORD

This coming Sunday is Easter. We will join with the church universal to celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. That singular act is what defines our faith, gives hope to our future and power to live victorious today. Without Easter, there is no reason to gather as the church. Because of it, there is nothing more important to do than be the church joined in worship and service in the world. You know we are working hard to make Sunday a day of great celebration and meaning. Please join with us this Easter and the days following as we live fully into the joy and power of serving the Risen Lord.

The resurrection of Christ affects who we are. It shapes how we relate with one another, the choices we make and the priorities we set. For the five weeks following Easter, we will focus on relationships. Our theme is, “Can You Relate?” This series will address family relationships, friendships, marital relationships, and broken relationships. Relationships are messy and none of us are perfect, come to worship and let’s talk about it.

Easter is not a Sunday, it’s a life-changing event. It gives us hope and assurance that our lives can be transformed. Come Easter People, Come, and let us be victorious in Christ our Lord.

Living in Easter joy, Pastor Rick

The Capital Campaign results will help us to determine the final design and project scope. Our conceptual plan will be presented to the District Conference in the near future. Additional activities include a site plan review with the Village of Clarkston, and an all-church congregational meeting before we are able to determine timing for groundbreaking. Sincere thanks to those who attended the Town Halls. We hope you found the exchange helpful. Should you have additional questions or seek more information, please refer to the church website and click on the "Expansion" tab. There, you will find a number of pictures, videos and renderings. If you have not had the opportunity to remit your Commitment Card, please consider doing so at your earliest convenience. MISSION Recently I spent a long weekend in Columbus, Ohio at the United Methodist Church for All People. I was attending a continuing education event for Church and Community worker Missionaries. The event was focused on local partnerships. Church for All People is a fantastic ministry in an underserved area of Columbus that started out as a free-store ten years ago and is now partnering with the city of Columbus, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and many other Christian and secular organizations in order to provide a huge array of services to thoseindividuals living in that area. The event was inspiring. The main message that the Church for All People leaders wanted us to leave with is that there is a “Divine Economy of Abundance.” Meaning, we already have all we need to make a real difference in our community. All we need to do is truly seek to be in relationship with God and our neighbors and find ways to utilize the assets we already have, for good. What a perfect message for a church whose mission statement is “Vitally connecting people to people and people to God”! So I ask you this: What are your hopes and dreams for our community? And... What are the gifts and assets you have to share? Stop by my office sometime and share with me what you come up with. Let’s see where our God-given gifts can take us! Maybe we can change our way of thinking from “how are we going to feed these 5,000” to “Who has bread and fish to share?”

Blessings, Mary B. Gladstone-Highland Community Outreach Director & Church and Community Worker Clarkston United Methodist Church

MISSIONS UPDATES PET Update : Wednesday, April 1, we will be carpooling to Ed Noll's workshop near Hadley to fabricate and assemble parts for the PET vehicles. We will meet at the church at 08:15, and be back by about 12:30. You should wear clothing appropriate for the weather that would not be ruined by a little paint. Bring your favorite work gloves. Please let me know by e-mail or phone if you can help with this activity. Thanks...God Bless.... Dave Kauffman

Helping Hearts Helping Hands Update God is good! Since the start of 2015 our mission has had the opportunity to change over 1000 lives, pass out over 200 backpacks with school supplies, feed over 300 children hot meals, install 4 water filtration systems, continue to support the many children in our Child Sponsorship Program, provide uniforms and school shoes to children, and so many other projects are in the works to continue doing God's amazing work throughout the year. Thank you to all of our church family for making this mission possible and for your continuous prayers, love and support.

STAFF PARISH RELATIONS COMMITTEE

Recently letters were sent out announcing a change in the Associate Pastor position at Clarkston United Methodist Church. At this time I would like to introduce you to Kyle Bucholz who will be our new associate pastor. Kyle is a recent graduate of Methodist Theological Seminary of Ohio and is extremely excited to join our staff July 1. He is married to Lauren, who is also graduating from seminary this spring. SPRC has had a chance to meet with him and he is excited to be coming to Clarkston UMC and has a high passion for ministry. Kyle was asked to describe his gifts and passion for ministry. He writes, “I place a high value on preaching and designing active worship services, the ability to listen to the needs of both the individual and group, encouraging others along their faith journey, personal counseling and confidentiality, encouraging youth and young adults in formation of their spiritual walk.” We will make plans for a welcome celebration of Kyle and Lauren into our church and inform you of the details. I ask you to pray for the Bucholz family as they prepare to return to Michigan and begin serving our congregation. Thanks be to God for this new beginning. In Christ, Larry Hahn - Staff Parish Relations Committee SPRC is excited to welcome Kathy Walker as our Director of Finance and Stewardship Ministries. We are blessed to have Kathy working with us. Kathy writes:

I feel that I have been blessed by this opportunity to serve CUMC. To be honest, I wasn’t looking to take on any additional work. My husband, Chet, and I own an income tax business and we have two boys, Thomas (13) and Matthew (11). I am usually kept challenged during the tax season. However, I have found myself growing increasingly bored after April 15. When Sandy Ballew approached me to assist in a few special projects, I thought that working a short-term project would be a nice change of pace. Little did I realize how much I would love what I was doing and the people that I have the pleasure of interacting with! When the opportunity came to make this a permanent position, I jumped at it. I know I have big shoes to fill, taking over where Carole Meyers left off, and I know that her presence in the Finance Office will be missed by all that stopped by for a quick hi and a handful of the gum drops that she always kept on her desk. If you have a moment, please stop by to say hi to me in the Finance Office. Maybe I’ll even stock some treats to share as well!

WORSHIP A "NOTE" of thanks! This lent and throughout the capital campaign, we have been so blessed in worship! This is a time to show our gratitude to all of those who have helped create meaningful and memorable worship in a variety of ways. Thanks to Sharon Sherrow for designing and creating the beautiful banners that you see hanging in the sanctuary. Thanks to Sue Deevey for the gorgeous cross and flame paraments that have hung on the pulpit and lectern throughout lent. To the musicians like Dan Reed, Jeff Scheu, Steve Thomas, Mary Gladstone-Highland, Kim Bishop and Leslie Wills who have sung or played solos…a huge thank you! Much appreciation goes to all of our ushers and greeters for being so welcoming and flexible no matter what is happening on any given Sunday. A special thank you to all the musicians young and not so young, who have blessed us by signing, singing and ringing. You truly inspire us in worship! Thanks to our lay readers, communion preparers, and communion servers who are always there to serve our congregation. To anyone who was a part of the "Cardboard Testimony," the Banner Parade, or helped with gratitude cards, a very special thanks to you for your willingness to serve. Congratulations Wesley Choir! Congratulations to all those involved in the Wesley Choir musical on March 15th! What an amazing blessing these children are to us in worship. Again, thanks to all the parents who helped with food, costumes, props, backstage help and everything else. We truly could not do the musical without our wonderful parents! Also, thanks to all the helpers from the Youth Choir who lent their experience and guidance to Wesley Choir. A special thanks to Cameron Hoxsie for lending his height to help Jeremy Mattson create Goliath for us! Thanks to all!

THANK YOU Hello, This is Nick Evans and Mitchell Ballew. We would like to thank you for all you have done for us and our confirmation class. We would like to let you know that we have collected 1700 dollars in profit for our project. This money is going towards food for our church's food pantry. We thank you for all of the help and support! From, Nick and Mitchell

LAY READER REFLECTIONS

April 2015 A Generous Spirit

I’ve wondered over the years how a Generous Spirit comes into being. How does it become synonymous with soul? Is one born with it? Is it because others show generosity to us, in particular? Can it come about by sheer will, by steadfast practice? How is a Spirit transformed? Perhaps it is a change in perception, brought about by God working miracles through those who touch our lives. Influential people in my life have modeled this spirit and I aspire to attain it. Some people are so much farther along this path than I! Perhaps the opposite of Generosity is Greed and the greed in our lives needs to be eliminated to make room for a Generous Spirit. It does not seem possible that they can exist side by side. To root out the greed, I need to come face to face with how it resides within myself, move my focus outside myself and practice unselfishness. From where did the woman’s desire come to pour an extravagant gift of expensive perfume onto Jesus’ head? Mark’s scripture indicates it came from her deep devotion to him. Jesus understood that and praised her. Love triggers the desire to give – think how carefully you choose a birthday or Christmas gift for your beloved, for your children and those you want to please and give joy. Think how you want to comfort, to pour salve on the wounds of your child who has been hurt by the world, by cruel words. How deep is my love for God? How anxious am I to please him? My giving reflects these things. Let’s take that a step farther. How deep is my love for those I do not know and how much compassion do I have for those I have never met? If I love God, I also love those who are unjust and those who harm. This is tough, something with which I wrestle. A generous spirit gives from the depths of the soul – witness Jesus as he unselfishly comforted the sick and lame. Observe him feeding the hungry, teaching, healing. We have seen this spirit in responses to national and international disasters, such as the recent Ebola outbreak. Prayerfully, now, Lord, we consider our gift to the current Capital Campaign. May it be given in sincere, overwhelming gratitude and love. Blessed Lord, I want to be like Jesus with a Generous Spirit. Transform me as we transform lives through this expansion of ministries! AMEN. Brenda DuPree Lay Leader

Flamingos to Migrate to CUMC this Spring! Please support our Senior Youth as they continue their fundraising efforts for their mission trip to Costa Rica! The fundraiser is a “flamingo flocking”. WHAT is a flamingo flocking? It’s where an individual pays a donation for our youth to place a flock of flamingos on a friend’s (victim’s) yard. The flamingos will roost in the targeted friend’s yard for a day. At this point the flamingo-ed friend has the opportunity to “hire” by donation our youth to help the flamingos migrate to another friends yard, and so on. Don’t despair: you can avoid a flocking with some Anti-Flocking Insurance. This guarantees that no flock of flamingos will roost on your lawn as they migrate around the area. The cost for this insurance requires a small premium at least $10. Youth will be taking your orders, beginning on Easter Sunday, or you can find a slip in the office to place your order. For more information contact Mary Gladstone-Highland at [email protected]

The Angels in Training have teamed up with CUMC April MIA Day, Monday, April 6th. AIT have beenbusy collecting spring break lunch items and will assemble them on March 29th in beautiful lunch sacks they have decorated. Then on Monday, April 6th MIA volunteers will pack them up for each family that has pre registered and distribute them at the homework club. Each student will receive 5 lunches each. Volunteers need to be there at 10, families will come 11:30-12:30. These lunches serve to replace the free lunches that they don't get on spring break.
