FROM THE PRESIDENT

One of the things I like to do when we are visiting someplace or even just on our daily outings is to read those

signs that are posted on the church message boards. It's not that I am religious, it's just some of ways the pastors

catch your attention with a fun phrase. I often think that photos of them would make a nice coffee table book.

The kind people pick up and breeze through.

The one that I just read said, "Every member was once a visitor." We, as people often shy away from strangers.

Not sure why but we do. Even though everybody was a stranger at one time or another to someone. Starting a

new position, church event or even club function, we all had to start as a newbie of some kind.

Remember the last time you walked into a place and some if not all of the people turned to see who just walked

in. If you’re new, it kind of makes you feel uneasy. You stand out like a “snowball in a coal pile.”

The next you time you see a new face, walk up introduce yourself. Make them feel at home. You never know

they just might be your neighbor or an old classmate. Remember, everyone will be a visitor at some point in

their life.

November is the toy drive. Bring in an unwrapped toy, gift card or movie passes for under-privileged children

again this year. We will also need cookies for our last meeting in 2014. Bring the recipe to share as well.

Thanks. Have a safe and happy holiday season. See everybody in January.

COVER CAR – 1868 BUILT BY JAMES F. HILL

This vehicle was built by 13 year old James F. Hill of Fleetwood, Bucks County, Pa. It was first powered with

a steam engine. It was replaced by a one cylinder converted steam engine to a gasoline engine which he was

granted US pat #711.628. The car was banned from the streets of Fleetwood because of the fear of such an

unconventional vehicle. Since the one cylinder had trouble negotiating the hills around Fleetwood, he installed

a converted steam to gasoline 2 cylinder that is still in it today.

The State Bureau of Motor Vehicles has issued a certificate of title covering what appears to be the oldest

gasoline motor vehicle in the United States and perhaps the world.

In an affidavit made before Charles V. Glynn, Notary Public, of Fleetwood, Hill declares he built the car in

1868 and asserts that about 1905 he received State Permit #56 allowing him to drive the car for which he paid

$2.00.

The vehicle is housed at the “Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles”, 85 South Walnut St., Boyertown, Pa.,

Phone 610-367-2090.

If you visit the museum, look at the sewing machine steering wheel, the cooling system and farm equipment

parts in its construction. Submitted By: Chuck Storm

FAREWELL MESSAGE FROM KEVIN

Hard to believe, another year gone. Yep, 2014 is almost history.

I hope you accomplished everything you set out to do this year. Finished the to-do list you wrote in January. I

hope you made some new friends and visited with old ones. Took time for yourself as well as helped others in

need. Thanked a service man or woman for keeping you safe. And remember, if you didn't get everything done,

next year is a great place to start.

I would like to say “thanks” for giving me the opportunity of being the club president for the past 2 years. I

have enjoyed making new friends and trying out things I thought I couldn't do. I still find it a challenge to talk

in front of a large group. But you never know what you can or can't do without giving it a shot. It's a nice way to

meet visitors and make them friends. Not to mention memories that will last a lifetime.

Stay safe over the holidays and we will see everyone next year.

Fun Facts ! 1910 Ford. Make sure you read all the statistics under the photo. This has only been 104 years

ago...Amazing!!!

Show this to your friends, children and/or grandchildren! The year is 1910, over one hundred years ago. What a

difference a century makes! Here are some statistics for the Year 1910 (applies to the USA):

***********************************

The average life expectancy for men was 47 years.

Fuel for this car was sold in drug stores only.

Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower !

The average US wage in 1910 was 22 cents per hour.

The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year.

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year,

A dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about

$5,000 per year.

More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME.

Ninety percent of all Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION!

Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press AND the

government as 'substandard.'

Sugar cost four cents a pound.

Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.

Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.

Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

There was no such thing as under arm deodorant or tooth paste.

Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into our country for any reason.

The five leading causes of death were:

1. Pneumonia & influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhea 4. Heart disease 5. Stroke

The American flag had 45 stars.

The population of Las Vegas Nevada was only 30!

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented yet

There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.

Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write and only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high

school.

Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help.

There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A. ! (yes, people have changed)

I am now going to forward this to someone else without typing it myself. From there, it will be sent to others

all over the WORLD...all in a matter of seconds!

Try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years.

About Las Vegas Do Las Vegas Churches accept gambling chips? THIS MAY COME AS A SURPRISE TO THOSE OF YOU NOT LIVING IN LAS VEGAS........ BUT THERE ARE MORE CATHOLIC CHURCHES THAN CASINOS. NOT SURPRISINGLY, SOME WORSHIPERS AT SUNDAY SERVICES WILL GIVE CASINO CHIPS RATHER THAN CASH WHEN THE BASKET IS PASSED. SINCE THEY GET CHIPS FROM MANY DIFFERENT CASINOS, THE CHURCHES HAVE DEVISED A METHOD TO COLLECT THE OFFERINGS. THE CHURCHES SEND ALL THEIR COLLECTED CHIPS TO A NEARBY FRANCISCAN MONASTERY FOR SORTING AND THEN THE CHIPS ARE TAKEN TO THE CASINOS OF ORIGIN AND CASHED IN. THIS IS DONE BY THE CHIP MONKS. YOU DIDN'T EVEN SEE IT COMING DID YOU? It's so easy to fool old folks!!! Now it's your turn to tag someone else! Have a great day!!!
