Annual Report2012-13

A Message from the PresidentIt is with great pleasure that I share with you the details of The Arc of Chester County’s successful fiscal year 2012-

2013 and express how thankful we are for your generosity and support. This past year, The Arc welcomed our new Executive Director, Jeanne Meikrantz. Jeanne’s commitment to those we serve, her leadership, sound fiscal and personnel management, and incredible staff have enabled The Arc to continue to seamlessly deliver quality programs and services. I am very pleased to add that the organization has continued its strong history of balanced budgets, ending the fiscal year in better shape than the year before! Your contributions, time and talent as volunteers, and your support of our endeavors are truly making a difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities and their families and caregivers. We have indeed together, achieved success!

On the next few pages you’ll meet Michelle Talis, an incredible young lady who has found a job she loves by utilizing our Comprehensive Employment Services (CES) program. Her story is not only inspiring, but a true testament, to how the CES program and our many other programs can spark the fire of achievement that is within everyone! You will also read about the richly deserved annual awards presented to individuals this year, whose efforts in the community have truly made a difference for individuals with disabilities and their families.

We are so grateful to all the generous individuals, corporations, foundations, community groups, and volunteers listed in these pages that have touched the lives of nearly 3,000 individuals and their families, by supporting our quality pro-grams and services provided by our dedicated staff at The Arc. Because of your commitment to individuals with disabili-ties, we are able to continue to offer and provide much needed programs and services and give individuals with disabili-ties the best chance at a quality of life.

As I complete my term as President, I‘d like to thank all of you for giving me the opportunity to serve, to be a part of this fantastic organization and to become a member of the Arc Community. The Arc has given more to me than I can ever hope to return.

Thank you, for achieving with us!!

Sincerely,

Tom Beckett President, Board of Directors

Faces of The Arc: Michelle Talis

Thanks to the Arc’s Comprehensive Employment Services program, 25-year-old Michelle was able to find her “perfect job.” Over the past two years,

Michelle has been happily working at the local Chester County Cosi restaurant as a food service associate.

Michelle loves her job delivering food to the customers, cleaning and maintain-ing the dining room. “Michelle consistently goes above and beyond her duties and really enjoys helping others,” says her job coach, Kristi Russell. Because of her sparkling personality, regular customers adore her and look forward to see-ing Michelle there.

Before working at Cosi, Michelle worked at numerous other jobs where she was not completely happy. She understood that finding the perfect job took time, but admitted that she had often felt a bit overwhelmed at previous jobs, and even wondered if there was a job that would truly be right for her. With help from her job coach, staff at The Arc, and her family, Michelle realized she needed to be persistent in searching for a job she enjoyed. Once she started working at Cosi, her bubbly personality came through as she helped customers and interacted with her co-workers. Michelle finally felt she found the “perfect job” where she could make a difference every day. Aside from enjoying meet-ing new people and working with her co-workers, Michelle enjoys bowling, baking and participating in West Chester University’s Best Buddies Program.

This past February, Michelle accepted on behalf of The Arc, The Dewees Mo-steller Community Service Award from The Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce. At the award ceremony, Michelle also shared her inspiring success story in a feature video viewed by over 300 attendees. Michelle was honored to share her story and represent The Arc.

Arc Awards 2013President’s Award - Agnes Chesko

Agnes served on The Arc’s Board of Directors and has been a key member of The Arc family for over 60 years. A lifelong supporter of individuals with disabilities and a fierce advocate for her son Bobby, diagnosed with an intellectual disability when he was eight years old, Agnes was a part of The Arc when it all began 60 years ago. Agnes was introduced to The Arc through Ruth Wood and became one of the founding families of The Arc who were so essential in ensuring their children’s futures and the rights to which they were entitled, from education to employment to how they choose to live their lives. When Bobby was five, Agnes as any other parent would, took Bobby to the West Chester School District to enroll him in kindergarten. The district would not allow it because of Bobby’s disability and Agnes was told, “There was no place for him.” A wom-an of action, Agnes took Bobby to West Chester Area School District Superintendent Stetson’s office. She left Bobby there and went outside to hide in the bushes. Thanks to Agnes’s persistence, Bobby was granted the opportunity to attend school. He attended the Child and Career Development Center until he was 21. Agnes has been instrumental in reaching out to governmental officials to promote awareness of the rights of indi-viduals with disabilities and advocating for change at the legislative level. Agnes involved her entire family in the organization through serving on committees, generating financial support and participating in events.

Employer of the Year - Giant

For over 10 years, Giant has been partnered with The Arc, providing Comprehensive Employment Services (CES) job opportunities to individuals with disabilities. A local business of community leaders who recog-nize the benefits of partnership and applaud the efforts of hard working, loyal employees, the manage-ment and supervisory staff at Giant stores have demonstrated that they indeed have good business sense and more importantly, a sense of responsibility. To them, inclusion comes naturally. Giant recognizes that in reaching out to help another person, everyone wins through the partnership. Giant provides the natural supports needed in order to help employees become successful and valuable associates, and they treat the people they employ with respect and compassion. The Arc’s Employment Training Specialists supporting CES participants working in local Chester County Giant stores summed up how Giant employees have dem-onstrated their commitment to our mission with these comments, “Giant is a very positive place to work. They can see beyond the disability. They have worked with people from our program to make them feel part of the team.” Thanks to the cooperation and spirit of the Giant management and staff, eight individuals with disabilities are flourishing in an inclusive work environment.

Ruth Wood Philanthropic Leadership Award - Amy Koegler and the Koegler Family

Amy has been a loyal Gemstone level donor since 2003. She has been instrumental in helping to secure funding from her employer, Aetna, to support The Arc’s programs and services and maximizing her gifts through Aetna’s Matching Gift Foundation. Amy is a graduate of the United Way Leadership Program and has served on the board as Presi-dent with over a decade of years of service as an officer and director. Amy also chaired the Community Relations Committee, and her passion ensured each year that the annual Arc Achievement Walk & Fun Day has been successful. From securing the Phillie Phanatic to fa-cilitating a long-time relationship and support with Animas, our corporate neighbor, both through sponsorships and volunteers has been invaluable throughout the years. Amy has also volunteered with the annual Milestones Campaign, served on the Governance Com-mittee, currently serves as chair of the Audit and Compliance Committee, and has overseen The Arc’s strategic planning efforts over the years. She has time after time reached out to her network to generate philanthropic support—introducing friends and family to The Arc through the gala, the walk and other events. Amy involved her whole family in The Arc. Her mother, Joanne Koegler received this award along with Amy, for her years of support

Volunteer of the Year - Susan March

Susan and her family have been part of The Arc family for 14 years since her son Joshua attended the First Step early intervention program. In addition to serving as a board member, Susan serves on the Joint Community Rela-tions and Development Committee for The Arc. Her commitment to bringing awareness of The Arc in the com-munity and ensuring the success of our special events is exemplary. Susan works tirelessly with the Community Relations Committee to develop strategies and approaches to increase The Arc’s presence in the public eye and in the disability community. She reaches out to friends, family and colleagues to raise awareness of The Arc in the local community and to develop partnerships with local businesses. Susan’s most outstanding characteristic as a volunteer is her endless drive to ensure Arc events are always a success. “Relentless” is how she describes herself as she embarks on planning and implementing The Arc’s special events – from the gala, to Breakfast With Santa to the annual Walk and Fun Day, spending hours of her time securing sponsorships and auction items. Susan, her hus-band Stephen, and Team Joshua have raised nearly $15,000 for The Arc’s programs and services through the Walk and Fun Day. Her commitment to community awareness and Arc events is unending. Her dedication and support through the hundreds of hours of time she devotes to The Arc is invaluable.

and dedication to The Arc. Joanne secured the honorary chair for The Arc’s 60th Anniversary Gala last year. Joanne has also facilitated a relationship between The Arc and Prudential Fox Roach Realtors, Devon office and their employees. Prudential’s support initially started as event sponsorships, and has grown to include annual grant funding for our Early Intervention program. Marie Crimmins, Amy’s aunt, has also supported The Arc through her time and dedication in selling Arc holiday art cards and prints at so many of our events over the years.

Lifetime Achievement Award – Ruth Wood

The Lifetime Achievement Award has been presented to less than a handful of recipients in the last 60 years. Annu-ally, Ruth Wood is honored by presenting an award in her name to an extremely deserving individual or family for their philanthropic leadership and support of The Arc of Chester County and the disability community. This year Ruth was honored with an award of her own, the Lifetime Achievement Award. Ruth was one of The Arc of Chester County’s most dedicated founders of the group of families who came together to advocate for their sons and daugh-ters. In her 60-year history with The Arc of Chester County and the disability community in Chester County, Ruth has been instrumental in fighting for the rights and abilities of people with intellectual and developmental disabili-ties. Her significant role in ensuring the right to education and advocating for legislative change provided hope and direction for individuals with disabilities and their families. Ruth’s vision and persistence forged the path for individu-als with disabilities to create choices for how they would choose to work, live and socialize. Ruth has touched the lives of thousands of people with her commitment to inclusion for all people with disabilities including legislators, parents, families, caregivers, providers, volunteers, board members, and Arc staff. Ruth has changed the way people view, think and speak about intellectual and developmental disabilities. Her influence has helped ensure that in-dividuals with disabilities not only have choices, opportunities, and a voice; they have the support, programs and services of The Arc of Chester County and the disability community. Ruth was honored for her vision, dedication and commitment to the improving the quality of the lives of individuals with disabilities for over 60 years.

Advocate of the Year - Lisa Faranda

Lisa Faranda, PhD, BCEA is a tireless education advocate for children and their families and caregivers served by The Arc. Initially joining The Arc as a fee-for-service education advocate, Lisa soon became a volunteer in the same role, as she could no longer bear to have families of children with disabilities have to pay fees to obtain the educational supports and services they needed, the services to which their children are entitled. Lisa has been an educator for more than 30 years and is certified by the National Education Advocacy Institute. Her work is informed by her own experience as a parent of children with learning and emotional challenges. She has learned a lot from her children, her students, and her clients and their parents, and seeks to provide a clear path for action and genuine opportunity for growth. Lisa also serves on the Right To Education Task Force, volunteers by providing monthly Advocacy clinics and works as a contracted Transition Project Coordinator for The Arc. The Arc’s families are indeed fortunate to have such a caring and devoted advocate and volunteer or their side. Lisa has already made such a difference in so many lives, and she is not through yet!
