Alexander Grischuk becomes the World blitz champion for the third time in his life

The second playing day of the World Blitz Championship went wrong for Magnus Carlsen straight from the start. The very first rounds have suggested that he would be very likely to lose his title in this kind of chess, and thequestion was who would become the new champion.

At first, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave was maintaining his lead gained on the first day, but in round 18 and 19 hestumbled twice, losing to Yuri Vovk and Vassily Ivanchuk, which allowed the former to head the standingssurprisingly two rounds before the finish.

However, Vovk failed to stay in the lead, as he was defeated by Vladimir Kramnik and then by Nepomniachtchi inthe last round. Vovk finished in the 9th place, which is nevertheless an excellent achievement for the Ukrainian.Meanwhile, as a result of the victory over him, Kramnik took over the lead before round 21, sharing it with hiscompatriot Alexander Grischuk, whom he drew a round before.

In the final round, both the leaders were Black: Gelfand - Grischuk, Ivanchuk - Kramnik. While Kramnik had hard

  • time holding Ivanchuk to a draw, Grischuk managed to outplay his opponent. This on-demand win broughtGrischuk his third world title in blitz, after the victories in 2006 and in 2012. Three years ago, Alexander revealedhis secret in the interview to our website: "If you want to be a strong blitz player, the main quality you need is beinga strong chess player!"

    Complete final standings

After the closing ceremony, the three top prize-winners summarized their impressions on both of thechampionships at the final press conference:

GRISCHUK: "First of all, I want to congratulate Magnus again, I can't stress that enough. It's one of the biggestachievements in chess history to win three such tournaments in a row - two of them last year, and the rapid here -because it's incredibly tough to win just one of them. Winning three of them is fantastic.

Actually, at the beginning of the blitz I was afraid that he was going to win his fourth one, and I started to besomewhat sick of him already at the moment.

Yeah, and as for me, I played the whole rapid badly. Yesterday went badly for me as well, but today somethingchanged for me - or in me, I don't know. Somehow I was really concentrated, I didn't speak to anyone between thegames to remain concentrated, and I think I played really well today. I couldn't believe I was going to win till the endwhen I beat Boris Gelfand, and then I needed just that Vladimir [Kramnik] doesn't beat Ivanchuk, because I wassure that if he won he would beat me on the tiebreaks, as a result of my very poor start.

Ivanchuk had two knights and three pawns against two knights and two pawns, so basically he couldn't lose itnormally - but with two knights, you can just put your king under a check and lose like this! This was the mostnervous moment for me today. But luckily, it was okay!"

VACHIER-LAGRAVE: "On the first day, I played extremely well. In general, I love to play blitz, but yesterday I waskind of in the flow... something that rarely ever happens, and things were just going so well for me... But today, thepressure probably caught me a bit - already in the morning, in the first few games... Actually, my results weren'tbad, as I wasn't losing games. Then suddenly I won against Peter [Svidler] in convincing fashion, and I was oneand a half point ahead, and somehow I was thinking I've not done it yet, and that I was the one who could preventmyself from winning the title. It was exactly what happened! I lost two games in a row. Even so, I finished with twodecent games, but it wasn't enough.

Congrats to Sasha on winning it and playing extremely well today when it realy mattered. And, just like him, I haveto stress that what Magnus did yesterday and last year, winning three world-class events in a row, is justincredible, especially when you know how easy it is to spoil it, especially in blitz.

I had a great time here in Berlin, I enjoyed it very much... But, to be completely honest with you, it rarely everhappens that the second place feels this bitter for me".

KRAMNIK: "Actually, to be honest, I wasn't sure whether to play the blitz tournament or not, because blitz is agame for young players. I thought I had no real chance to be in the top, and if so - why to play at all? In alreadytwo days, I'm travelling to another tournament...

So, I was hesitating a bit, but then decided to play, and of course I didn't expect at all to have such a good result.Again, okay, some fifteen or twenty years ago I was a very strong blitz player, but with age you start to lose yourreflexes...

During the tournament, I wasn't looking at the standings at all, but just two rounds before the end somebody toldme that I was tied for first, and this was a huge surprise for me. Then I won in the penultimate round, and of courseI was already hoping to win the event. But okay, in any case, the result is very good, and also I had difficulties to"enter" the tournament: in my first five or six games, I wasn't really feeling the rhythm. I was on 50% score after 5rounds, then I made "+9" in the last sixteen rounds without losing a single game, playing against absolutely bestblitz players in the world. I think I've collected everyone today! ...It's a bit reassuring - I mean that maybe I can stillplay chess for a while."
