JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS

YEAR 2 CHESS COMPETITION

Following two terms of specialist chess lessons with the coach from Gardiner’s Chess as part of the Year 2

Mathematics program, students in Year 2 participated in a chess competition this week. All students played

four games against girls from across the three Year 2 classes. Congratulations to all the girls involved and on

their efforts to improve their skills in this strategic game. Well done to the following girls on their

outstanding results:

1st = Skye Linfoot

Runner Up = Summer Hayes

Highly Commended = Summer Ledingham, Analiese Murphy and Gigi Anaiya

‘On Tuesday we had the Year 2 Chess competition. I t was great fun and I really enjoyed playing against

other people. Chess is a fun game to play with your friends and people you know.’

‘On Tuesday we had our Year 2 Chess tournament. Chess is a great game for friends to play and all the

games were played in good spirits. Well done to all the girls for trying their hardest during the tournament.’

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS

Interviews for parents of students in Pre-Prep to Year 6 will be held in the classrooms on Friday 18

September between 8.30am and 4.00pm. The Parent Interview booking system can be accessed via the

Parent Teacher Interviews portlet on Parent Lounge. You will be able to book the interview times that suit

you best from any internet-connected computer by using this system. Bookings can be made by logging on

to Parent Lounge at any time between 9:00am Thursday 3 September and 4.00pm Wednesday 16 September.

Students in Years 3 – 6 are invited to sit in on this interview to contribute to the conversations regarding their

learning. In Week 9 these students will bring home their Portfolios for viewing and discussion with their

parents. These portfolios are required to be returned to School before Wednesday 16 September.

INTERIM EFFORT RATINGS

The Term 3 Interim Effort Rating Report will be online on Parent Lounge from Wednesday 16 September.

Your daughter will bring home her goals for Term 4 which she has set after discussing her effort ratings with

her Form Teacher. Please take time to discuss these goals and the Interim Effort Rating Report with your

daughter in order to assist her in developing steps to achieve these set goals. Any questions can be discussed

during the Parent/Teacher Interviews on Friday 18 September.

YEAR 3 CURRUMBIN EXCURSION

‘I loved going on the trip to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary because I got to see new animals that I haven¹t

seen before. My favourite was the wedge tailed eagle because it has such big, beautiful wings and it is a

lovely colour.’ Shivani Whala

‘I learnt that the Wedge Tailed Eagle needs protection. Birds are losing their homes because people are

chopping down all the trees. We can help them by putting bird nesting boxes in trees so that they have

somewhere to live.’ Portia Whittingham

‘I enjoyed learning all about Australian animals. The golden brush tailed possum was the most interesting

animal we saw. It is a very rare animal.’ Alexi McCarthy

‘I enjoyed learning about and seeing all the birds at the Flight Show. I never knew that the Wedge Tailed

Eagle was that big. When you are driving you might see the eagle eating some dead animals on the side of

the road. Make sure you slow down and give it enough time to fly away. It is a really big bird and it takes a

moment to start flying.’ Ruby Pullich

‘I learnt that lots of species of animals in Australia are endangered. We can help endangered birds by

putting up nesting boxes in our gardens. It is important to look after them because otherwise there will be

none of that type of animal left.’ Ava Manton

‘I thought it was cool, but gross at the same time, watching the owl have surgery at the Animal Hospital. We

got the see the insides of the owl.’ Grace O¹Reilly

OUTSTANDING SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT AT SOUTH COAST REGIONAL ATHLETICS

Congratulations to Nyah Bollinger, Georgia Morris, Hayley McGrath and Hannah Collins who all competed

at the recent South Coast Regional Athletics Trials. These girls performed very well at the Hinterland Green

District Trials to be selected to participate in this event and all girls competed very well once again at this

higher level.

Nyah Bollinger (100m & 200m) and Hannah Collins (Long Jump) performed exceptionally well registering

PBs in their respective events and have qualified to compete at the State Athletics Championships in

Brisbane in October. Congratulations girls!

GYMNASTICS

On the weekend, over 40 St Hilda’s School students participated in the Delta Classic, an event for

gymnastics from Levels 1 – 10. Congratulations to all students who participated and performed so well.

This week Junior School students Jessica Cleverly, Emma de Fazio, Olivia Cook and Jaid Whitney will be

travelling to Bendigo to compete in the National Clubs Gymnastics Championships. Jessica and Emma will

compete in Level 5, Olivia in Level 6 and Jaid in Level 7. Also, during the upcoming school holidays

Jessica, Emma and Olivia as well as Sienna Thompson and Stephanie Sprague will compete at the State

Level 4 - 6 Gymnastics Titles at Chandler. Jessica and Emma will also represent the Gold Coast Region in

the Regional Challenge in the second week of the holidays. We wish the girls all the best for these very

challenging competitions and look forward to hearing how they performed.

CLUB NETBALL

Congratulations to Gemma Goldie for winning the 8-10 year olds Sportsmanship Trophy. Gemma was

chosen by the association and the umpires for this very prestigious award. St Hilda’s Topaz also won the

Junior Spirit Award for the season. Isabella Briggs, Charlie Milligan and Ella Speering were all nominated

for the Competitive Competition Sportsmanship Trophy. Congratulations to all our SCNA award winners.

YEAR 4 CLASS NETBALL GAMES

To conclude the Netball unit in Physical Education classes in Year 4, three of the classes held a Round Robin

on Friday. Students from the classes participated eagerly and with great sportsmanship. Congratulations to

Year 4 on winning the day.

EARN AND LEARN

Thank you to everyone who has supported the School in the Earn and Learn promotion. We have been

eagerly counting the stickers and with the assistance of many students from Years 3 – 6 will send the stickers

to Woolworths to earn points to purchase classroom equipment for 2016.

STUDENT ILLNESS

There are currently quite a few viral illnesses throughout the School, most of which are very common and

easily spread through either air-borne mechanisms or direct contact. In an effort to prevent the spread of

infectious diseases within the School, we actively encourage the girls to wash their hands frequently and

carefully dispose of tissues. To further help reduce the spread, it is also best if students who are unwell

remain at home until their symptoms have resolved. We understand that this can be difficult at times, but

appreciate your support in limiting the exposure to these and other common viral illnesses.

VACATION CARE BOOKINGS SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2015

Vacation Care bookings can be accessed via the FlexiSchools website www.flexischools.com.au for the next

Vacation Care period; 18 September – 6 October. Once again, there is a wide variety of wonderful activities

on offer, including a Gymnastics Day and a Hip Hop Dancing Day. Please note changes can be made up until

Thursday 17 September by emailing afellowes@sthildas.qld.edu.au .

CENT AUCTION

Four days to go! Thank you to all the families who have contributed to the class Cent Auction Baskets.

These will be collected on Thursday morning in order to prepare for Fete Day. If you have not yet made a

contribution it would be appreciated if you could bring it in by Thursday.

PREPARATIONS FOR 2016

As Term 3 comes to an end, we look forward to the end of year activities of Term 4 and preparation for the

2016 school year and to seeing your daughter return next year in what will be a very exciting year for the

students of St Hilda’s School. Should your daughter not be continuing as a student in 2016, parents are

reminded that it is a condition of enrolment that one term’s notice must be given in writing to the school. If

this period of notice is not provided, you will be required to pay Term 1, 2016 fees as penalty. We commit

resources on the basis of confirmed enrolment numbers, and termination of an enrolment without notice not

only denies another student the opportunity of a place, but also results in loss for the school. If you have

PARENTAL VOLUNTEERS

Thank you to all the parents who have completed the requirements in order to volunteer within the school. If

you wish to volunteer within the school in Term 4 please ensure that you have completed the following:-

2. Complete the Acknowledgement of Understanding Forms on pages 3 and 4 of the Safeguarding Our

Students Student Policy and Procedures Guide, and return to Mrs Cleverly in the Junior School

Reception.

We value the time parents volunteer with our girls and the strong community connections this time fosters.

We know that you share an appreciation of all that is being done to assist young people to feel safe and know

that adults in their school will listen and report any matters of concern to those who can assist. If you have

TERM 4 UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS

All parents and students are reminded that in Term 4 students are required to wear the summer panama to

School as part of the uniform each day. Parents are also encouraged to check the length of their daughter’s

tunic - this should be of mid-knee length, and make any changes to the hem should this be necessary over the

holiday break.

YEAR 3 AND 4 CAMP

Information regarding Years 3 and 4 Camp was uploaded to Parent Lounge last week. Please complete the

relevant forms prior to Thursday 17 September. Parents are reminded to ensure they inform Mrs Janette West

of any special dietary requirements or medical needs before Thursday.

YEAR 2 AND 3 CHOIR

Parents of students who participate in this activity are reminded that Choir rehearsal on the Thursday 17

September has been cancelled.

COMMUNITY

Donations of pre-loved and vintage clothes for clothing stall would be welcomed. Please deliver to

Fete Shed veranda this week or in the first week of the school holidays! Thank you.

Cake box decorating competition (boxes and entry form coming home today, open to Years PP – Year

4): decorate to your wildest dreams! Please fill the box and return to Junior Reception Friday 9 October

to enter.

Remember to book your Fete Ride Armbands now via Parent Lounge, Pre-purchase $35.00 for 5

hours of unlimited fun. Armbands purchased fete day $40.00 per armband. Thank you to Dr Andrew

Letchford for supplying Fete bags on collection of your Fete Ride Armbands and for presenting out

fireworks!
