President’s Comments
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR HELPING SMC TO RECEIVE OUR 5th CONSECUTIVE LOE, 5-STAR AWARD.
Every chapter in Arizona received the 5-STAR award as well as the state
Council of Chapters. I will be picking up our award at the MOAA National
Annual Conference on October 31st in Orlando, FL. Then, we will affix that
banner to our chapter flag at our November dinner meeting.
Our 2nd annual MOAA-DBACKS game will be on Sept 13th vs the LA Dodgers. Our color guard
will present the colors again along with the flags of all of the nine AZ MOAA chapters. We hope
to see you and your family at Chase Field.
There are two state-wide functions coming up that our members generally support. The AZ
Hall of Fame Awards luncheon will take place on Friday, October 23rd at the Buttes Resort,
Tempe. Tickets are $50.00 before Sept 30th. Then on Saturday October 31st, the Annual
Vietnam Veterans Dinner will be held at the Scottsdale Resort at 6:30pm. Tickets are also
$50.00. We generally have at least two tables at each of these functions. Greg Moore will be
handling the reservations and Austin Foote will cut the SMC check for each of the parties. So
if you want to attend one or both of these functions make out your check to SMC.
At our August luncheon, Ray and Rita Roalofs were scheduled to attend. But at 10:30 that
morning Ray had a seizure. Right after our Sunday luncheon, I went to Banner Desert MC to
visit my youngest daughter, and down the hall was Ray. Both are out of the hospital and doing
well.
For those MOAA members who live in Mesa, there is a veteran banner program to honor vets
by purchasing a banner with the veteran’s picture printed on it. Then those banners are flown
at least twice a year to honor those vets. Please visit www.mesaaz.gov/heroes if interested.

AUXILIARY NEWS: from Ann Ferguson
SURVIVING SPOUSE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SSAC)
The September meeting of the Auxiliary will be Friday, September 11, 2015 at 11 am. The
meeting will be at Dobson’s Restaurant, 2155 S. Dobson, Mesa. There is no need to make reservations as all of you are welcome to attend and bring a friend.
We will pack boxes for Packages from Home starting at 11 am and begin our luncheon at 11:30 am. We hope to pack 10 to 15 boxes at each meeting. As of the end of May we had packed and shipped 60 boxes this calendar year. Our goal is 120 boxes this year so we need 60 more boxes filled with your generous donations. Please help us by bringing your donation items to our meetings or sending a cash donation to our Treasurer, Austin Foote for this project. You’ll find a donation coupon on page 11 of this newsletter. Our troops need to know they are not forgotten and what better way to do that than to send them some items from home. We still need baby wipes, cotton swabs, hygiene items and snack
items such as jerky and Tootsie Rolls. We also include current magazines, Sunday comics, calendars, writing paper and greeting cards in our boxes. So look around and see what you might have to share.
We continue to collect used paperback books for Operation
Paperback and hardback books for the Phoenix VAMC. We
mailed 2 boxes containing 31 books to troops in August and
sent an additional box of books to the VA. Remember if you
can’t bring your donations of books or supplies for Packages
from Home to a meeting, you can call me at 480-961-9634 or
email me, [email protected] to request a pickup.
Again, thank you all in advance for your generous support of our troops thru Packages from Home and Operation Paperback. I know they appreciate your support as well.

AZCOC President Ronald Perkins, presented Ed Fox and our
chapter, the award for the Best Recruiting Brochure from National
MOAA. Many people helped with the making of the Tri-fold and
it is proving to be a helpful recruiting tool.

Luncheons
The attendance at our summer luncheons is usually small as many of us are
seeking milder temperatures, visiting friends and relatives, or just off
having fun somewhere. It is still nice to get together with our MOAA
friends for a good meal and comradery. The staff at Dobson’s Restaurant
have stepped up and have given us a place we enjoy getting together. The
service is good, the food is good, and it’s a nice quiet place for us to meet.

Thanks to everyone that hosted our 50/50 raffle this summer.
We need volunteers to host our monthly raffles. If you would like to host one of the months or donate an item for the raffle,
please contact Greg Moore 480-814-0580 [email protected]. We need 5 or 6 items, each worth at least $20.00. If you are
willing to host, we will try and help you get the items.
Central Arizona Satellite (Our satelitte chapter) June Meeting
The chapter held a meeting on June 13th in Coolidge. Several of our local chapter members made the drive to be at the meeting. Interest is growing and we are hoping the satellite chapter will be a great success.

A message from
1st Vice President Greg Moore
We have some great dinner meetings planned for the next 4 months to finish off the year with style!
September 20th - Cowboys and cowgirls will want to brush off their boots, put on their buttons and bows and "up their giddys" for the September 20th chapter dinner meeting. For those who want to "boot scoot" we will have live music. Dinner entree choices will be filet mignon, BBQ chicken breast or BBQ shrimp skewers. Please have reservations to me by Thursday September 17th.
October 17th - Our Fall picnic at Kawanis Park is always fun, with great food and fellowship.
November 15th – Our Veterans themed dinner meeting will have the JROTC Cadets presenting the POW/MIA Ceremony. We will also have active duty service members from all branches of service as our guests as we recognize and thank them for their service.
December 13th – The election and installation of our 2016 Officers and Board of Directors. This is our formal dinner and is always fun to see everyone in their finest.
CHAIRMAN REPORTS
2st Vice President Ann Schminke Membership
I’ve been thinking about a “key word or phrase to explain chapter membership growth. The “personal touch”---a hand shake with a bit of salesmanship thrown in
best explains our growth of membership. We have one member who carries our tri-fold brochure wherever she goes. It’s heavy on the purse, but light years in passing out the word on MOAA’s objectives.
Do you read Bob Delker’s memos about national events effecting MOAA members? Watch for his news on TRICARE.
I’m looking forward to September’s Western theme, our picnic in October and November’s tribute to veterans.
There will be good food, too! We do have a lot of offer—information from National plus some excellent comradery at the local level.
Legislative Ed Fox
There is a lot happening or not happening in our nation’s capital in September.

another shutdown this fall. The administration is threatening to veto any legislation that exceeds federal budget caps. On Capitol Hill, lawmakers are at odds
Over the appropriate levels of domestic and defense spending.
Congress is back in session on September 8th and lawmakers will have only 10 legislative working days to avoid a shutdown. They might
pass a budget within constraints imposed by the Budget Control Act, Pass a Continuing Resolution, or perhaps craft another Murray-Ryan deal. Their last temporary fix is set to expire on Sep 30th
. The
prospect of securing a FY16 budget prior to Oct. 1st looks doubtful.
Congress is considering drastic pharmacy fee increases for service members and retirees. Pharmacy fees could increase 66 to 75 percent.
When you receive the Legislative Update from Bob
Delker, please read it and contact your local
congressman to let them know your feelings on the
issues.
Personal Affairs Arlan Allen
If any of you need help in dealing with Veterans Affairs, let me know. I have
helped many of our fellow servicemen work through all the red tape and I will be happy to guide you through.
When a veteran dies these documents will be needed and
should be kept on hand.

Need A Job? Beginning in October temporary jobs will be highlighted in the various Phoenix media. Some of these jobs may very well lead to permanent employment once the Holiday Season has ended and should not be discounted from your consideration. Career Fairs will continue on a monthly basis in the Phoenix Metroplex and often provide assistance in resume construction and hints for preparing veterans and their dependents for the all-important job interviews. Don’t overlook these opportunities and “Good Job Hunting!”

Here’s a few suggestions…… Be involved in your chapter!
How about bringing an item (maybe a can of food, Top Ramon, hygiene products such as a bar of soap, baby wipes or maybe some Tootsie Rolls or other hard candy) to the next dinner meeting for Packages from Home? If everyone brings something it will help the Auxiliary ladies keep the program going. We need more members… Get a few of the Chapter Tri-folds to carry in your car. You never know when you might meet someone that is or was an officer that would be interested in joining our chapter. There is information about our chapter as well as a membership form in the tri-fold.
