The College Admissions Officer’s Guide 565 43 / CHAPTER FORTY-THREE / by Lisa Kujawa, M.A. Assistant Provost Lawrence Technological University Jane Rohrback, M.A. Director of Admissions Lawrence Technological University Creating a Career Ladder: Motivating and Developing Staff L awrence Technological University (L TU) is an independent, coeducational accredited university founded in 1932 and offer- ing over sixty academic programs at the associate, baccalaure- ate, master’s, and doctoral degree level. e University is composed of the Colleges of Architecture and Design, Arts and Sciences, Engineering, and Management. Approximately five thousand students are enrolled in full-time, part-time, and non-credit programs. We should begin with a little history of the admissions office. Before we can describe our current office dynamic, we need to describe how it used to be. Each admissions counselor position was focused to service a specific type of student or service (e.g., freshman, transfer, graduate or international, campus programming), which resulted in silos within the admis- sions office and the campus community. Counselors were knowledgeable and accountable only for what was related to their specific responsibility — for example, there was one admis- sions counselor responsible for on-campus programming. is counselor met with deans, associate deans, and student service offices to coordinate all activities for successful pro- grams.
