• There are passages that Muhammad and followers recited– The words he says in

the Qur’an were believed to come from Angel Gabriel

• Muslims do not allow their holy book to touch the ground or get dirty

• Most Muslims memorize a lot of Qur’an verses in Arabic

What is the Sunnah?

• Sunnah= practice of religion– The example that Muhammad set for Muslims during his

life (It could be like a precedent or guide for Muslims)• EXAMPLES: Muhammad told Muslims to be sure to not let

others go hungry• Children must honor parents

*After Muhammad died, thousands of stories were researched about him and his journeys throughout Muslim lands

• FIRST PILLAR:• Shahadah = profession or declaration of faith• When Muslims state belief in one God (Allah)

– “There is no god but God, and Muhammad is the messenger of God.”• Shahadah also means that Muslims submit to God, making him the

center of life• This pillar follows them from birth to death. Kids learn prayers that they

recite• Muslims believe in a day of judgment

What is the second pillar of Islam?• Salat= daily prayer• “Prayer is proof” of

Islam• This pillar is about

discipline, spirituality, and closeness to God

• People called to pray 5 times a day

• A crier called a muezzin chants to call everyone to pray from a minaret (tower)

Muslims pray in a holy temple called a mosque.• Before praying,

Muslims go to fountains to wash hands, face, arms, feet (For purification)

• Then, they form lines to enter prayer area
