The summer is flying by!

Hometown Festival Week was great! The weather cooperated well and it appeared that a great many people enjoyed the various celebrations that were held throughout the community. Thank you to everyone who came out and supported all of the wonderful community events!!!

I would like to especially thank the Committee members of our first Southwest Music Festival for a tremendous event! Event Chair, Bob Digman, did a fantastic job helping to organize, gather sponsors and provide volunteers the day of the event.

With the end of summer on the horizon, it means our fall events are rapidly approaching!

We still have some tickets for our first “Fall Harvest Table Dinner” scheduled for Saturday, September 24th from 5:30PM-9:00PM at Digman Grain Farms. We are partnering with the culinary students at the Southwest Wisconsin Technical College who have determined a menu (5-courses!), will be preparing and serving the food. An emphasis is on local foods. Our guests will be Ann O’Leary, Alice in Dairyland and Sarah Klavas, Deputy Secretary for the Wisconsin Department of Tourism. Tickets are limited and are $50 each. Our goal is to make this a fundraiser for SWT’s culinary scholarship program. This will be such a unique event and the food is guaranteed to be delicious! Please call the Chamber or stop in and get your tickets before they’re gone!

Please mark your calendars, as well, for this year’s New Student Welcome which is set for Saturday, September 3rd from 4:00PM-6:00PM. The event will start with a scavenger hunt in the downtown and end with a program and picnic sponsored by UWP in City Park. More details on the scavenger hunt and how you can participate are included in this newsletter as well. Members are encouraged to provide items for the ‘swag’ bags we prepare for the students. If you have something you would like to have included, please have the items to us by Friday, August 19th. We are preparing 1300 bags but you can provide as many items as you would like. Together with UWP, we would be grateful for any donations to be used as prizes throughout the busy weekend.

The 70th Annual Dairy Days Celebration and 19th Annual Historic Re-enactment are scheduled for September 9th-11th.

The parade form for the parade, scheduled for Saturday, September 10th at 9:30AM is included in this newsletter. This year’s theme is “Our Roots Grow Deep”. If you are interested in entering, I would like to encourage you to do so now so that we can get an early start on the lineup. Our deadline is Friday, September 2nd.

New fall travel publications are starting to arrive so stop by and pick up some of this free information. Fall in Wisconsin is a great time for a get-away! Our hours are Monday-Friday from 8AM-6PM, Saturday from 10AM-4PM and Sunday from 10AM-2PM until the end of October.

The New Student Registration Resource Fair at UW-Platteville ran for 3 weeks this summer. The Chamber had a booth set up in Ullsvik Hall for all 3 weeks. There will be around 1,600 new freshmen starting at the University on September 6th this year! It was great getting to meet some of the new students and their families. One of our interns, Ally, helped out at our booth during the 3 weeks.

Southwest Music Festival

PLATTEVILLE REGIONAL CHAMBER

Saturday, July 30The first annual Southwest Music Festival was a success! The morning began with a craft and ven-dor fair in the park, and throughout the day the local bars and businesses hosted live music for all to enjoy. In the afternoon, the Elk’s Lodge hosted the traditonal Hog Roast.

In the afternoon there was a raffle drawing for a giant cooler full of beer donated by the local bars, and Angie Boldt from Pioneer Ford won the grand prize! There was also a drawing for cash prizes of $500, $200, and $100 from the Traveling Music Cards that attendees completed. The $500 prize went to Deb Molle.

Later in the evening, the midwest-band Black Wa-ter Gin opened up the Main Stage with Blue Water Highway Band following as our headliner. This was Blue Water Gin’s first visit to WI, and they loved Platteville. The rest of the evening was left for those in attendance to enjoy and have a great night. Thank you to all the sponsors, volunteers, and staff who helped make our first annual Southwest Music Fest such a great day for all. We are looking forward to next year!
