Unique Storytelling Eventby Rev. Chris Shorow, Senior Minister
Summer Sunday School Concludes With Story Through Song10am Sunday Mornings
August 8Join us in the Chapel as Diane Ball presents The Story of Songs.Diane will sing and tell the story of many songs of faith through the years.
August 15Special GuestJahruba! As a finale to the summer children, youthand adults will join together in Fellowship Hall for a drumming circle with
Jahruba! This gifted storyteller and drummer will draw us all in with wise stories
and rhthyms. With audience articipation, he will lead us in drumming and folk
stories that touch the heart. He will join us in our 9 and 11am worship services
well. What a wonderful way to wrap up our summer of learning!
This year
we have
been focus-
ing our wor-
ship andmany of our
Bible stud-
ies around
the theme
of storytelling. It is important to share
our story of faith and the Bible has
many good role models in storytelling,
not the least of which is Jesus himself.
Story has the power to teach unlike
many other methods. Jesus parables
are a prime example. When asked
who is a neighbor, Jesus respondswith the story of the Good Samaritan,
as opposed to listing who might be
our potential neighbors.
When we want to share our
faith with others, usually the most
effective method is sharing our story.
Our Communications Ministry has
started a wonderful ministry to begin
filming many members of our con-
gregation sharing their story. These
videos will be shown in worship during
our Annual Campaign this fall. You will
be inspired by these testimonies of faith
and stewardship. They will also beginposting video stories on our website, to
share the story of First Christian and its
people with others.
On August 15th our church family
will have a special treat as we invite
Jahruba to come and share his unique
story-
telling
abilities
with us.
Jahruba is
a profes-sional
rummer
who
writes
poems
and tells
African
folktales
as only he
can. He will be here for the Summ
Sunday School session where he w
invite all of our youth and children
to join him in drumming, (well havover 30 drums they can play!) and
listen to his fascinating tales.
Jahruba will also join us for the
9:00 and 11:00 services, giving the
childrens message and special mus
on the drums. I know we will all be
inspired by his gifts. Check him out
his website, www.jahruba.com. An
continue to share your story.

DISCIPLE-CISE STOP #13Special Project: BEAUMONT, TEXASYou have now traveled 400 miles from your last stop in Little Rock, Arka
sas and spent 240 minutes of exercise.
Beaumont, Texas is the site of a Disciples Volunteering SummerProject in partnership with the Week of Compassion. Disciple volunteers
will be working from June 6 to August 10, 2010 to build a new place of
worship for the Northwood Christian Church in Beaumont. It is anticipate
that the building will be approximately 4000 square feet. Their beautiful
building (pictured) was destroyed by Hurricane Ike in September 20, 200
Then in November 2008 while construction workers were trying to repair
the building, the steeple caught fire
A visitor to Beaumont remarked This church without a building,
without the outward trappings, worshipping in a metal building on the
edge of its property, is the healthiest of
all. Maybe that should teach us a lessonabout what a church truly is.
Keep on traveling!
