What a wonderful way to wrap up ou
summer of learning!
I spoke with Bob Grant on Sunday who was telling me
how important blood donations were to so many people. I
know that to be true and I know many of you do too, because
this congregation has always been a leader in blood donation.
He told me this story and I asked him to write it up. Th thing
you need to know before reading is that Bob has given over55 gallons of blood in his life, a pint at a time. I admire his
commitment and dedication, all because his life was touched
in an important way. Just as we celebrate the life that comes
to us in the blood of Christ, let us celebrate those who give life
through the gift of blood donation.
As the Oklahoma Blood Institute celebrates and honors blood donors and the lives
of people saved by these donations, it is important for us to remember Robin Orendorff,
who spent her life as a member of this congregation.
A little girl born without functioning kidneys, she spent her life fighting just to stay
alive. Her portable filter pack constantly needing service or repair, and her struggles so great
she spent several months in a psychiatric unit because life was just too hard. Finally, a
doctors suggestion resulted in a pair of dedicated donors from the Oklahoma Blood Institute
that matched her blood and strengthened her to the point she could survive a kidneytransplant. She got that transplant at age 12 and the next two years were every childs
dream. Robin attended school full-time for the first time, went to Disneyland and spent her
14th summer at Lake Tenkiller with her grandparents, swimming, horseback riding and
doing things kids should get to do.
At age 14, she unfortunately passed away. One of the dedicated donors involved
agonized over her untimely death until he realized he had helped give Robin two extra
years of quality life she had never experienced before. He then realized the great value and
dramatic impact the simple and easy act of blood donation could make on the life of another
human being.
Was it worth it? I am telling this story to the congregation because I was one of
those donors and I want to remind you that donating blood can make a life-changing impact
on someone, even here among us. If you donate, please continue. If not, start and if you do
I promise it will change a life, and I promise it will change yours.- Bob Grant
