Latino Population

• During the 1960s, the Latino population in the US grew from 3 million to more than 9 million.

• Mexican-Americans are the largest pop. of Latinos.

• Nearly 100,000 Mexicans from territories ceded by Mexico in 1848.

• Over a million Mexicans came after 1910, following Mexico’s revolution.

• Braceros, or temporary laborers, during the 1940s and 1950s.

• Close to half a million Mexicans immigrated, most in search of better paying jobs during the 1960s.

1962- Chávez and Dolores Huerta est. the National Farm Workers Association.

1965- Workers strike at a large grape grower in the San Joaquin Valley.

In 1967- After five years, grape growers and workers

settle on contract.

1966- NFWA merged with a Filipino union to form the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee, also known as the UFW.

1968- Chavez began 25 day fast.

1970- Huerta negotiated a contract for higher wages.
