The Central Coast Claims Association is on the move. We had 30 people in attendance today at our new trial venue for lunch, Massimos Ital-ian Restaurant, in Fremont. Everyone seemed to enjoy the event, and the faire. We had a great presentation from John Riera from American Air Testing Incorporated on indoor contamina-tion claims. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed his presentation and we learned a lot.

Our next event is a quick turn-around, this Thursday, December 5, 2013, back at Massimo’s. Please plan now to attend. This is our holiday party, so should be lots of fun. It is not our normal third Thursday of the month because of closeness to Christmas and other Holiday events. We will continue with what has become our tradition - Bingo! There will be appropriate prizes, hopefully you will bring raffle gifts to give away, and we will be giving toys to tots so please bring an unwrapped gift for a child and the Marine Corps will be there to take them away and distribute them.

I had a great year as your President, the Claims Association is growing, on the move and good things are looking ahead with our new President Joanne Dean.

Have a wonderful Holiday Season for you and your family.Sincerely, Your President 2013,

December message from 2013 CCCA President Bob Tucknott

Central Coast Claims Association News Network • December 2103 5Indoor Contamination Claims Revealed at November CCCA

Longtime indoor air contaminants experts John Riera, of American Air Test-ing provided an indepth examination of the various elements at the November 21, 2013 CCCA luncheon meeting.

Longtime indoor air contaminants experts John Riera, of American Air Test-ing provided an indepth examination of the various elements at the November 21, 2013 CCCA luncheon meeting.

Riera, who carries a veritable laundry lists of certifications after his name (CIE, CMRS, CMC, CAC, LAI), started his business some twelve years ago, in his home town of San Francisco. His firm now has reportedly performed

more than 6,500 docu-mented indoor air quality inspections throughout the Bay Area. He managed to work through what could easily be considered not-for-mealtime subject mat-ter with no signs of queasi-ness from the crowd.

He discussed five ar-eas of work his company performs, stating that he

works with the FBI on fungi, invisible toxins, and such. The majority of his work, he said, comes from fire and water dam-

age, and sewage. He talked about the importance of getting to a claim site quickly,

stating “fish & insurance claims start to smell after 30 days”. Claims that take longer to identify, test, and remediate as necessary, he added, usually end up in court.

The best thing one can do, he said, is “listen to clients’ needs”.He also explained the need for an independent testing company, say-

ing “abatement companies are technically not supposed to do any testing”. Mr. Riera expressed the importance of adhering to the IICRC s520

standard guidelines, and showed some tools used in his work, including a Zefon air sample trapping device, and an Anderson Impactor.

H e t a l k e d about asbestos, and sewage/bacteria, commenting the the latter: “if you can smell it you’ve got a problem”.
