“Keeping the Main Thing the Main Thing”
I entered pastoral ministry during the tenure of the late Bishop Robert
Morgan. Bishop Morgan scared the living daylights out of me. I always
seemed to do something wrong when he was around. I admit it. The
man intimidated me.
I always remember, however, one of the first things he said to Kentucky
United Methodists when he first arrived.
“Keep the Main Thing the Main Thing.”
By that, Bishop Morgan meant that we are to be focused on making
disciples of Jesus Christ and not allowing ourselves to be distracted by
other issues.
In the next few months it will be easy to lose sight of that. In a couple of
weeks, the General Conference promises to have some very controver-
sial moments. When the United Methodist Church begins to show up
on cable news outlets (as we surely will), I cringe.
In June, at annual conference we will bid good-bye to Bishop and Mrs.
Davis who, for eight years, have been incredibly encouraging to us. In
July, at the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference, we will receive a
new episcopal leader who will, most likely, help guide the Kentucky
Conference for the next eight years.
There’s a lot to become anxious about potentially.
But let’s not.
I am reminded of C.S. Lewis’ work, The Screw Tape Letters. In the
work, Lewis brilliantly writes from the devil’s point-of-view about how to
derail a young Christian. He suggests that perhaps a frontal assault is
less helpful than lulling the believer into complacency or distracting
them with the trivial.
Until Christ returns, we have a job to do. It’s not that some of these
other issues are not important. They are. But not one of them is more
important than doing the work of Christ and continuing the process of
making disciples. So… let’s keep the main thing the main thing.
Let us be in prayer during these important days but let us not be over-
whelmed or distracted by all that is transpiring.
Blessings,
Pastor Willard

until we begin harvesting and planting our summer

dening, or would like to help deliver our gardens bounty
to those in need in our community, please contact Matt
Bell to see what you can do to help!
We donate 100% of the vegetables . If you know of a
family in our community that may be blessed by receiving

The Church Office is Closed Monday
May 30th in observance of the
Memorial Day Holiday.
This Memorial Day remember the
men and women who have perished
in war, giving the ultimate sacrifice to
make the world a better place.
The Congregational Care Team is currently updating the church's Food
Chain List. This list contains names of those who desire to provide food
for our congregation in times of need such as illness or bereavement in
the family. The need has increased and WE NEED YOUR HELP! You will
be asked to prepare one dish, not an entire meal. If your name is not
on the list, please take advantage of this opportunity to serve others by
signing up today. You may call the church office Angela Cook (633-
4510) or Arlene Yount, Food Chain Coordinator (633-2277).
The church is in need of a wheelchair or transport chair. If you have
one not presently in use, would you consider donating it to the church? You may call Angela Cook
(633-4510 ), Lynda Tharp (633-1118) or Patty Ethington (633-4510), Serve as Team co-chairs.
MYSTERY SOLVED -- There Was No Robbery
The rumors of stolen church bushes can stop now. There was no theft. It was
an act of kindness. Members of the community Master Gardeners have volun-
teered their time and resources to help the Redwoods with some
of Centenary's landscaping needs. The expert gardeners determined some of
the azaleas against the building were not thriving and would never thrive in
that location. They, along with county horticultural extension agent, Walt
Reichert, are donating varieties of hosta plants for the Washington Street en-
trance and for each side of the railing on the Fifth Street entrance. They are
also planting some oak leaf hydrangea bushes along the Fifth Street area.
The Redwoods group is grateful for Walt’s assistance in the design and plan-
ning of our ‘green thumb’ facelift. Stay tuned as more plantings will be includ-
ed in the future.
Wednesday Night Connection Opportunities
If you are interested in the Daniel Plan meetings, but didn’t start out with us back in
February, it’s not too late! We are just now starting the 2nd of the 5 essentials (Food!)
The Daniel Plan Class meets on Wednesday evenings in Room 206 through June 29th @
5:30 pm. You can start your journey toward better health through The Daniel Plan. This
groundbreaking program will equip you with practical tools and resources to bring
health into every area of your life. What makes it different from other wellness
programs is that The Daniel Plan was built with “love” as the motivation. It’s a reflection
of God’s love for us. It’s a story of abundance, not deprivation. A step by step approach
that helps you make small changes that lead to big results. Your journey is one of pro-
gress, never perfection.
The Daniel Plan is framed around The Essentials: Faith, Food, Fitness, Focus and
Friends – life areas that all work together to restore and sustain your long-term health.
Faith is the foundation with God as the source of the power and the energy behind all
transformational change. As you follow The Daniel Plan, you will discover that you have
a part to play in getting healthier, but God will energize your efforts. We have learned
that doing The Daniel Plan in community, with a group of friends is the “secret sauce”.
People who do the program together lose 50% more weight!
The General Conference of the United Methodist Church, a every four year event. We will draw from
resources, along with special guests to learn more about this major event in the life of the church.
In honor and celebration of all Women
Mothers, Grandmothers, Aunts, Sisters,
Step-Mothers, Adopted Mothers and Foster Mothers
Thank you for your love and for all the
sacrifices that you made to help us
along life’s journey.
Congratulations to the following members of our congregation who are graduating! No doubt they look
forward to the next phase of their lives with much excitement, anticipation and perhaps a little appre-
hension. Graduation is an important moment for our students, and our church family. Please join us
for Senior Recognition Sunday on May 22 as we celebrate their accomplishments and support their
future endeavors.

The family of Edward D. Hays, brother of Lynda Tharp express their sincere
appreciation for your many acts of kindness during Ed’s extended illness and
recent death. Your prayers, cards, calls and food were a constant source of
love and support. Also, we are so grateful to our Centenary Family who
traveled to Danville for the visitation and/or memorial celebration. The plant
you sent was beautiful.
For all of your love and support we feel blessed.
