Coleridge
"No civilization is complete which does notinclude God's dumb and defenceless creatureswithin the shere of charity and Mercy,"
Queen Victoria
Inspired by these well known words, a group of revered enthusiastsnamely Sir William Lee Warner together with Khan Bahadur Hassanally, BegEffendi. Messrs lagget Price, Sayed Hassan Mediru. Tance Denso and Mr.Framroze E. Punth::lkp.v r.onvened a public meeting at Frere Hall Garden on the
18th day of May 1880.
As a result of that meeting the Karachi S.P.C.A. was inaugurated. ThisSociety has great pleasure now in presenting this souvenir to its members andto the public.
Depending as it does largely on the patronage of the public. the Societyhas developed with the help and encouragement from all quarters. Thegrowing interest in its humane works is a testimony to its usefulness.
Unfortunately cruelty will remain inevitable as long as we have to rearanimals for food on a large scale without inflicting suffering. Even if intensivemethods are not used, traditional farming involves castration. the separationof mothers and young ones, the treating up of herds, branding, over crowdedtransportation to the slaughter houses and finally the slaughter iltelf which isslow and can be very painful according to some religions.
We like to criticize and protest about bull fighting in Spain and SouthAmerica, the killing of baby seals in Canada, but about the hidden daily crueltygoing on everywhere around us we prefer to shut our eyes, We have seenhow, in violation of the fundamental moral principle of consideration that
ought to govern our relation with all beings, humans inflict suffering on non~
humans for trivial purposes, and we shall see how generation after generationof Western thinkers has sought to defend the right of humans to do this.
Even if we go so far as the Bible and the ancients of Greece Verse 29 Igenesis suggests that at first Man lived on herbs and fruits of the trees. andhas often been pictured as a scene of perfect peace, in which killing of anykind would have been out of place, Man ruled, but in this earthly paradise, hewas a benevolent despot. After the fall of man. killing animals clearly waspermissible, God himself clothed Adam and Eve in animal skins before drivingthem out of the Garden of Eden. Then the deluge and Noah to whom all creatures have been delivered into his hands and that he has divine permission tokill and eat them. This is the Hebrew writings towards non-humans.
The second ancient tradition of Western thought is that of Greece. Here we have conflicting tendencies. Pythagoras was a vegetarian and encouraged all his followers to treat all animals with respect. apparently because hebelieved that the soul of the dead migrated to animals. Then came Plato andhis pupil Aristotle, not only they had not the slightest consideration foranimals but none eilher for a free man who had lesser amount of reasoningpower. Nature. they thought. is essentially a hierarchy in which those withless reasoning ability exist for the salce of those wilh more.
After the Greeks we have the Romans who for a long time In theirfamous games killed beasts and humans with equal ferocity and pleasure.
There were and thele are leligions, especially In the East which havelaught that all life is sacred but Christianity spread the idea that every humanlife and only human life is sacred; so while the attitude towards human beingswas softened. attitude towards animals remained callous and brutal as it was inRoman times. In fact il was worse because there had been a few Romans likeOvid. Seneca Prophiry and especially Plutarch who had shown compassion andadvocated a kind treatment to animals on the ground of universal behaviour. There were few Christian saints who had sometimes feelings for animals butthey made no impact. We had 10 wait nearly 1800 years before any Christianwriter bothered about the cause dear to our hearts.
At least now, most countries have an S,P.C.A. But this is no answer, noremedy by failing to attack the major kind of cruelty to animals; these groupshave allowed the public to delude itself that all is well. The difficulty with theanimals was and is that they cannot act as a pressure group to get their rightsand have to depend entirely on us. To allow some improvements to be madeand to last. we need Laws. National and International, that sanction theruthless exploitation of non-humans for human ends. We must have a radicalbreak with more than thousands of years of Western thought about ilnimals. It will come but when?

Recently I have had the singular honour of becoming aPatron of this esteemed Association whose affiliation underdifferent names is Worldwide.
In our country where so much is being done to help anduplift the lives of our fellow human beings, I am sad to say thatin comparison very little is being done for the prevention ofcruelty towards dumb animals. CRUEL TY is denounced by allRELIGIONS in the World, whether it is towards fellow humanbeings or against dumb animals. The S.P.C.A" led by the devoted and untiring efforts of Lady Constantine, with its very limitedresources-Funds and Manpower-is doing a magnificent job. Ifervently Appeal to our generous countrymen and all animallovers to come forward and donate either cash or volunteer apart of their spare time to help revitalise this floundering Association which in the past has done so much for so many gratefuldumb animals.
THANK YOU
RUSSIE M. DINSHA W

TO THE SPCA ON THEIR ANNIVERSARY
I would like to congratulate the SPCA on it's Anniversary.
It is always reassuring to know that an organisation exists, in
this busy city of Karachi, where people seem to care little for
their fel/ow beings, and even less so for the animals that live,
work and die alongside them, which takes as its task, against all
odds, the care, rescue and rehabilitation of the destitute and ill·
treated animal.
The staff of the SPCA are to be admired, and Lady
Constantine is to be congratulated, for her unflagging enthusiasm
in performing a task which few of us ha ve the credentials to
discharge. but which all of us are very glad to see being
carried out.
With best wishes,
M. K. Marker.
AN APPEAL
All living things come from God. It is with this thought that the memobers and well-wishers of the SPCA comemmorate the 106th year of their exislance. And this seems to us a good time to appeal to the Public and especiallyto the young. to help us.
Brutality IS a cancer in our society. if we do n01 check il at an elementary level it will - and does - increase and flourish at the human level. To giveyou but one example: About two months ago in Empress Market dozens ofcats and kittens were found with their eyes gouged out. One can only supposethis was a fOlm of "spor!"', Help us to stop such vicious cruelty. We needvolunteers people who are active. mobile. and concerned about the basic moralvalues of our society.
The Society for the Prevemion of Cruelty 10 Ammals was founded in1878 and has been working with unobtrusive dedication ever since. It has twoobjectives. Its primary and immediate purpose is, of COurse, to countelact instances of brutality to animals, But the Society is also concerned with theplight of all animals in the city; the Zoo; the problem of stray dogs; the proposed sale of the Richmond Crawford Vet, Hospital etc.
The office of the Socity is located in the City Courts, Revenue BUilding. Here, apart from the usual paper-work, the Society luns an 'out-patien' dispensary tor animals that are brought by their ownerS or the SPCA inspectors.
The SPCA has inspectors who patrol the city every day looking forpowers to 'challan' offenders who are finally produced before a Magistrate ina special SPCA court. The penalties consist mostly of fines, but the Magistratemay order the detemion 01 a sick or wounded animal.
Such animals ale treated at the SPCA Hospital situated at Gulshen-iIqbal. It has a capacity of about 150 animals. Cart-owners bring their sickanimals here lor treatment and others bring pets. So also animals that havebeen abandoned - as is our custom - when they are too sick or old to work.are given nourishment and medical care at the hospital.
Unfortunately, our inspectos are limited in number and mobility, so thatonly certain areas of the city can be patlolled. We need volunteers to do thiswork.
,
Ij
In western countries school children and teenagers work for the SPCA.Can we not do the same? You will appreciate that the effectiveness of theSociety is sev~rcly curtailed by public indiffelence. The average citizen ignoresinstances of animal abuse that he happens 10 see. and this ill turn encouragesunscruplous owners to further abuse.
Only a little effort is needed. Phone any of the following Nos. 218851.536882.532090 between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. and report abandoned or suffering animals thaI you have seen. Even this may be a unnecessary. If you see acalt·owner over-loading his animal. thrashing or ill-treating it in any way.check him. It will at leasl shame him enough to stop. If not then take thenumber of his carl and phone one of the above Nos.
We appeal to you. the Public. for donations. Send us what you can.however small. it will be gratefully received and acknowledged. But above all.we appeal for help: for volumeers who have compassionate hearts. Domesticanimals are the most helpless and the most easily victimised of God's creatures. If we want to build a society with spiritual values. surely this is thefllst step.
If you would like to help or to donate money. medicines. foodstuffsplease contacl:
