CCAD Mission Statement

Page 3: CCAD 2010 Achievements Brochure

Welcome to Cleveland College of Art & Design (CCAD) – the only learning establishment of its kind in the North East and the perfect setting from which to launch any number of exciting careers in design and the arts. We have been the top performing College in the North East at Level 3 (‘A’ Levels and equivalent) for the last four years running. That’s not because we take the most able students. Our contextual value added results, showing the progress that our students make after GCSEs, placed us in the top twenty schools and colleges out of more than 2,600 in the country - for the third year running. More than nine out of every ten students who complete a Level 3 qualification with us will go on to study at degree level. It’s no surprise that our most recent Ofsted inspection, which judged the College to be outstanding, praised many aspects of our work from the quality of student support and the variety of our curriculum to the high standard of our specialist teaching.

At degree level we were rated fourth for overall student satisfaction out of 290 colleges and universities in the latest National Student Survey – and our response rate was over 80%. In the last year we have bought and refurbished two superb listed buildings in Hartlepool for our degree programmes and have expanded our student social space with a new refectory due to open this month. We also plan to build new space at our Middlesbrough campus in 2011 to significantly enhance student social space and facilities, including an enlarged and refurbished learning resource centre and the creation of additional studio areas.

Despite these improvements, and the provision of industry standard equipment, what’s really important to us is that our students enjoy their time with us and are supported to achieve the very best results that they are capable of. We expect that they will look back on their time with us fondly and we are sure that the skills that they gain will stand them in good stead throughout their careers.

This brochure shows some of the exceptional achievements that our students have recorded, as well as including case studies that spotlight some of our successful students of recent years. I hope you enjoy finding out about their stories.

Key FOR LeAgue tAbLeS(a) Value added uses a benchmark score of 1000 to measure how well students have progressed from GCSE

to A-level or their equivalent. For schools and colleges who achieve 1000, this shows that the value they add

to a student is in line with their expectations and that such students have realised their potential. Scores

above this figure mean students, on average, have overachieved, scores below 1000 have underachieved.

(b) Average point score per student means the total grades each student achieved in total. The higher the

points, the better the student did across every qualification taken.

(c) Average point score per exam means the average grade students achieved for each exam. The higher

the points, the higher the grade

Cleveland College of Art & Design (CCAD) aquired over Hartlepool’s Leadbitter and Archive Buildings from the Borough Council in May 2010 as part of a £2.2m redevelopment plan, creating a cutting edge art and design college in the heart of the North-East. Further development plans, include the acquisition of the Municipal Building. This new campus, exclusively for HE in Church Square, involved the centralisation of the College’s current higher education provision and allows for future expansion, forming a cultural quarter in the centre of town. The grade II listed buildings were refurbished to blend historic and contemporary features creating studio space and student social areas, The College’s existing premises in Green Lane, Middlesbrough also benefited from the

re-development plans. With its refectory being extended and refurbished as part of the first stage of improving the social space and services for further education students. Proposals for the future will include the building of a large central courtyard atrium and internet cafe facility, which will be accessed via a new entrance gallery running alongside a new learning resource centre with a student support and guidance help desk. CCAD Principal Martin Raby said: “Our expansion project has been part of a longstanding strategy to separate out our further and higher education.”

“This would not have been possible without the additional space that has been created by the acquisition of the best legacy buildings available in Hartlepool. “After nearly three years of searching we were struggling to find suitable premises and discussions with the council led us to the availability of these incredible buildings. The refurbishment plans saw modern elements blended seamlessly with the traditional architecture which offers students inspiration by providing the very best facilities in an historical setting. CCAD Director of Estates, David Lawton said: “The new buildings added almost 2,000 square meters to the College which has allowed us to develop our strategy to provide degree provision on a single campus and improve the working and social facilities for both students and staff.

“The Hartlepool buildings were well maintained by the Council so we have reaped the benefits of that and continue with ongoing maintenance, retaining all the original classic features of the buildings including cornices, mouldings, staircases and wood panelling.” “The new buildings already provide excellent studio workshop space but we want to invest in more social space to give the buildings a real heart and a university environment for our students.” “The improvements in Middlesbrough will ensure that the Green Lane Campus continues to be an outstanding centre for further education art and design regionionally.”

Student JeSSica laNGford, 18, of Middlesbrough, hopes to start her own jewellery design business, after completing a Foundation Degree in Applied Arts “I knew I wanted to come to CCAD even before I left school. “I used to visit one day a week for my art lessons and knew it was the place for me. “I’ve now been able to get my National Diploma in Design Craft and an A level in Textiles and I’m really excited about taking my degree course in the fantastic new buildings. CCAD is way better than an ordinary college. “It’s so friendly and relaxed the tutors are really helpful. There are great extra-curricular activities that get everyone together and there is a real close knit supportive family feel within the whole college.”

CCAD continue to develop their Industry links through project work and winning commission work for their students through work modules. Recently lucy atkiNSoN, Advanced Diploma, Creative and Media Student, was chosen from dozens of entries, to produce a leaflet for family fun day out for Hartlepool Borough Council. Her winning leaflet attracted more than double the usual turnout to the one day event. Lucy said “It was my first design to be commissioned and I was so excited to actually see it in print that it has made me want to pursue a career in graphic design.”

Cleveland College of Art and Design was awarded a grant of £225,000 from the Skills Funding Agency to help young graduates set up their own businesses in Hartlepool. The funding has been used to transform the former Masonic Hall and adjoining shop premises to create incubator units and retail space for graduates to make and sell their designs. The new project will hopefully be a boost to the economy of Hartlepool following the recent Experian survey showing that the Tees Valley is likely to be particularly vulnerable to reductions in Government expenditure. About 40 % of our graduates come from Hartlepool, Middlesbrough and Redcar, three of the towns mentioned as the ten least resilient to impending economic change. CCAD are planning to do all that they can to help their graduates to earn a living from the skills that they gain in their time at the College and help increase economic activity locally. The new unit can accommodate up to twenty graduates across all disciplines including ceramics, photography, fashion,

BooST FoR GRADUATe BUSINeSSeS

and jewellery making, offering low cost affordable rent and access to specialist college equipment which would otherwise prove too costly to many new businesses. Martin Raby, CCAD Principal said “This is something we have wanted to do for a long time. This grant has helped us to push the project forward and if it is successful the college will consider expanding the project when it acquires the Municipal Building from Hartlepool Borough Council.” CCAD business development manager, Melanie Shee added: “Our hope is that this project will help our graduates become established more quickly as self employed creative artists in the local area. “We already have excellent support from Business Enterprise North East which delivers a business link service and will continue to offer support to our graduates. “At CCAD we want to help those graduates who want to live and work locally and it is important that we do everything we can, no matter how small, to play our part in boosting the local economy.”

Cleveland College of Art & Design are delighted to be working with Sir John Sorrell and his foundation to offer a Saturday Art & Design Club for talented young artists. The Saturday morning classes are for 14 to 16 year olds and are designed to help young people gain a wider awareness of the opportunities available within the art and design industry. The project is being funded by the Sorrell Foundation with support from Audi Design. The Sorrell Foundation, set up by eminent designer Sir John Sorrell and his wife Francis, aims to inspire young people offering the opportunity to explore drawing, painting, making and a range of other activities through the resources available at the four remaining art colleges in the country, of which CCAD is one.CCAD was approached by Sir John Sorrell to pilot a Saturday morning art club for GCSE art pupils in the region. It had been a long-time dream of his to start a national network of clubs to help inspire and engage young artists and designers, as well as offering them the opportunity to acquire new skills to use as part of their GCSE coursework.CCAD contacted local schools in Middleborough

SATURDAY SoRRell clUB

asking for art teachers to nominate pupils who would be interested in taking part. This resulted in twentyfive very dedicated young people attending and producing some outstanding work. The thirty week multi-discipline course offers students the chance to try a range of creative arts including animation, drawing, painting, fashion, photography, ceramics, sculpture, games design, print and multi-media. As part of the course the students have already visited Somerset House in London where they presented self portraits to the foundation. The students will also be offered the opportunity to attend a master class with internationally renowned artists and display their work with an exhibition and certificate ceremony in London.A spokesman for the Sorrell Foundation said: “Opportunities for young people to discover and develop their creative skills outside the school environment are few and far between. The Sorrell Foundation aims to bring back a system which led to many individuals developing successful careers, creating thousands of jobs, contributing to the economy and helping to form the bedrock of what is now called our creative industries.”
