CCAD’s New Projects program presents a unique and exciting curriculum that pursues creative excellence through the development of projects rather than the study of specifi c media. It is based on the belief that an artist’s studio practice is best learned through the quest to complete a defi ned exploration.

Th e program stresses studio mastery, individual scholarship, and “real world” ideals such as organization, communication, clarity of thought, leadership, and entrepreneurial skills. Th e MFA program aims to educate artists who are capable of taking on interesting artistic endeavors and who also have the skills and talents to make their vision manifest.

PROGRAM OVERVIEWPROgRaM MiSSiON & ViSiONOur mission is to prepare professional artists to be creative leaders in the community and the world at large. We value an educational experience grounded in the production of art and illuminated by community, critical thought, entrepreneurial insight, and creative spirit.

CCaD’S MiSSiONTo prepare tomorrow’s creative leaders for professional careers. With a history of commitment to fundamentals and quality, CCAD advances a distinct, challenging, and inclusive learning environment that supports individual development in art, design, and the humanities.

DEgREE TyPETh e successful graduate of this program will earn a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree. Th e MFA is recognized as the highest degree in the creative practice of visual art. It is earned through a rigorous scholarship in both academic seminars and studio practice.

aCCREDiTaTiONTh e college and the graduate program are accredited by both the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

STuDiO PROJECTS (Semesters 1 and 2)

Th is one-on-one mentoring course is core to the MFA experience at CCAD and is focused exclusively on your work in the studio. Its goal is to strengthen your understanding of your work and how it relates to the broad range of techniques, forms, and ideas that comprise contemporary art and design. You will work independently on your project with one-hour weekly studio visits between you and your faculty mentor to refl ect on your methods, ideas, process, and fi nal work. Mentors will help you develop a work plan and provide access to CCAD’s labs and expertise.

gRaDuaTE SEMiNaR (Semesters 1, 2, 3, and 4)

In these weekly critiques with your fellow students, faculty, and visiting artists you will discuss your work as it progresses. You will have the opportunity to receive in-depth feedback from peers who may be working in diff erent media and/or come from diff erent orientations. One of the basic tenets of the program is that all students are one another’s teachers and mentors. As part of this community, you are expected to hold your fellow students to the highest levels of intellectual rigor and professionalism. Th e aim of these critiques is to provide a form for the productive and respectful engagement of ideas. To support this process each student is required to post germane materials each week on their learning blog for the group.

ThEORy aND CRiTiCiSM SEMiNaR (Semesters 1 and 2)

A weekly contemporary art theory and criticism course provides a theoretical and critical context for your work. Content will vary depending on the visiting artist/scholar, but the focus will always be on developing awareness of the contemporary visual arts world and concurrent critical theory.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

14

DigiTal CulTuRE (Semester 1)

This course will teach you how to leverage a wide variety of digital tools in both the classroom and the marketplace. The emphasis is on technology as a viable delivery tool for your work. However, while digital presentation vehicles are paramount, they are not the ultimate goal of the course. The goal is the convergence of art and digital delivery. Technology only serves as a foundation for that convergence.

TEaChiNg METhODS* (Semester 2)

A weekly graduate seminar focused on teaching, planning, and assessment of college-level studio art classes. Taken in conjunction with Graduate Teaching Internship, GRNP5072. This course is required to earn a Certificate in College Art Instruction, an elective course of study for MFA candidates.

*CO-REquiSiTE: TEaChiNg iNTERNShiP i (Semester 2)

If you’re interested in a teaching career, you can participate in a paid teaching internship with a CCAD faculty member in which you’ll observe a class, discuss teaching, and participate in workshops on pedagogical issues such as designing a course, running a critique, and evaluating students. You may also teach a lesson or serve as a lab assistant. Upon successful completion of the teaching internship, you can apply to be a Graduate Teaching Associate (instructor of record), although positions are not guaranteed. If you have significant teaching experience, you may be exempt from the internship requirement at the discretion of the program director.

Page 15: CCAD MFA Guidebook 2013-2014

15

gRaDuaTE PROgRESS aSSESSMENT (Semester 2)

During the last weeks of the second semester, you will be required to complete the Graduate Progress Assessment, which consists of a written component and participating in a group exhibition/event.

Off-CaMPuS ExPERiENCE (timing varies)

At some point during the program, you will be required to participate in an off-campus experience. This could take many different forms, from individual mentoring to an internship or foreign study, and will be designed in conjunction with the program director. The college has developed a list of national and international artists, business leaders, and scholars with whom you might work, as well as residencies, internships, and other opportunities from which you can select. The goal is to widen your experience and introduce you to new voices and environments.

Experiences at community nonprofits, hospitals, scientific research centers, labs, human service enterprises, and “green” endeavors are all possibilities, alongside more traditional experiences at galleries and museums. In the past students have done off campus experience with artists and designers such as Nicola López, Simonetta Moro, and George Pratt and at locations such as Pilchuck Glass School, Mildred’s Lane, and the National Park Service.

PROfESSiONal PRaCTiCES (Semester 3)

Oriented to individual student needs and goals, this course addresses the tools and skill sets students will need for success after graduation. Issues of entrepreneurialism, marketing, and leadership are covered along with the practical application of creative/business partnership.

ThESiS PROJECTS (Semesters 3 and 4)

The thesis project is the most substantial and important requirement of the program. It allows you to experience the parameters and logistics of producing a major exhibition of your thesis project. It serves as the nexus of the pedagogic and real-life professional experiences. While this can take many forms—exhibition, performance, installation, film, website—it is required to be of the highest professional quality and must involve some form of public exhibition.

Potential venues include CCAD galleries and other approved spaces. Time-based works may be screened at local theaters. A thesis overview explaining the context, research, theoretical and critical issues, and historical background inherent in the project is required. At the time of presentation, you will be expected to participate in an oral defense of the work and the paper.

In addition to the thesis project, overview document, and oral defense, you will be required to produce an online component for your project. This may take various forms, but should express the content and form of the thesis project to a larger audience.

ThE lEaRNiNg BlOg

One of the unique aspects of the New Projects curriculum is its emphasis on communication and success. The faculty believes that it is important for today’s artists to be able to explain their research, document their influences, and engage in meaningful dialogue about their work. To this end, you will be required to keep a learning blog for the duration of the program. This site will serve as the documentation of your explorations, thoughts, dialogues, and feelings as you move through the curriculum.

This internal certificate program recognizes successful completion of designated coursework and a series of teaching internships focused on the teaching of studio art at a post-secondary level. It is an elective program and not required for the MFA degree.

To earn the certificate, students must successfully complete the Teaching Methods course (GRNP5071) and Teaching Internships I & II (GRNP5072 & GRNP5073).
