    PREFACE

The Directorate of Education has decided to initiate the formulation of support

material for Problem Solving Assessment (PSA) for all the government school

students of class IX (2012-13). This handy tool is a part of our endeavor to enhance

the research and analytical life skills ability.

It is a widely acknowledged fact that the ability to apply basic concepts to

solve application based problems in mathematics and science and to comprehend

and analyse written text are the skills which ensure success in higher studies and

professional growth. These life skills will greatly assist learners in acquiring high

order thinking skills such as problem solving and decision making. It will greatly

assist the learners to crack the public entrance examinations.

Quantitative Reasoning, Qualitative Reasoning and Language Conventions

will greatly help the students to understand arithmetic problems, use logic in form

of relationships ,analogies and directions. All these items would develop creative

thinking, decision making, critical thinking, problem solving and communicational

skills. It would assess students ability to process, interpret and use information. At

the same time it would increase the curiosity of students and help in their

    intellectual growth.

    Passage No.3

Just as it is vital for parents to live their own lives as fully is possible and to deepen their understanding ofthemselves to the utmost, so it is important for teachers and educators to do the same. When children go to school

their teachers become, during school hours, substitutes for their parents. The children transfer to their teacher someof the feelings they have for their parents and are influenced in their turn by the personalities of the teachers. This

mutual relationship is of more importance than any teaching method, and a childs ability to learn is continuallyhampered if the relationship is unsatisfactory. Again, if teacher really want to be educators, to help children todevelop into satisfactory men and women, and not simply to stuff them knowledge, they will only be reallysuccessful if they themselves have sound personalities. No amount of preaching, however well done, no principleshowever sound, no clever technique of mechanical aids can replace the influence of a welldeveloped personality.

    1. The teacher will be real educators by _a) Adopting advanced teaching methodsb) Stuffing children with knowledgec) Developing sound personality of their ownd) Through good teaching skills

    2. The central idea of the passage is_a) Teacher should develop sound personalities of their own to be able to influence the childrenb) Informal education is better than formal educationc) There should be research done in educationd) Parent should have good interpersonal relations with teachers

    3. The writer recommends to the teachers to deepen their understanding of themselves on the assumption that.a) Will earn them a name of nation-builderb) It is their dutyc) Will make them earn high payd) Helps to build well developed personality

    4. The teachers and educators are important to children becausea) Without teachers they would remain ignorantb) They help them to get jobsc) Teachers serve as substitutes for parents in schoolsd) Teachers preach good principles

    5. What do you understand by well-developed personalitya) To develop into healthy beingsb) To develop into completely good human beingsc) To develop into rich personalitiesd) To develop into educational beings

    6. A good relationship between parents and teachers enhancesa) Educational qualificationsb) Interpersonal relationshipsc) Wholesome development of the childd) Healthy environment

The phenomenon of change of a liquid into its vapour at any temperature below its boiling

point is called evaporation. Wet clothes dry up in air due to the evaporation of water. Rate of

evaporation increases with increase in temperature. The particles in a liquid have different

kinetic energies. Some particles have lower kinetic energies and other have higher kineticenergies. The particles having higher kinetic energies at the surface of the liquid overcome the

forces of attraction of other particles, leave the surface and get converted into vapour.

Evaporation is continuous process and particles keep on escaping the surface of the liquid.

    1. At what temperature evaporation takes place?(i) At boiling point(ii) Above boiling point(iii) At room temperature(iv) Below boiling point

    2. How do wet clothes dry-up?(i) Due to condensation(ii) Due to evaporation(iii) Due to surface tension(iv) Due to temperature
