The feast of the Body and Blood of Christ and the way we celebrate our Eucharistic meal

At Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish, we would like to feel everyone is welcome at our Masses. This very much includes children and young people. We take our cue from Jesus who welcomed everyone into his life and meals. We also take our cue from the way we hopefully celebrate our family meals. Everyone is welcome, including children. We share stories and ideas. Children hopefully pick up and incorporate our family values at our meals, just as we

pick up the values of Jesus when we share the food of the Eucharist.

During the scripture readings and hopefully the homily participants are concentrating to hear the word of God and the wisdom contained in it. It requires attention and focus. If young children become disruptive during these times it might be a good time to just take them quietly out into the Narthex until they settle. The Narthex has proved popular with families with children. In a similar vein, bringing

food and drink into the church is not encouraged.

SOME EAST TIMOR NEWS Luciana whom the Parish has sponsored through much of her Primary School and to Year 10 at Zumalai, was then required to go to Ainaro for Years 11 & 12. There, she stayed at the Canossian Sisters Boarding House while she attended school. Luciana has now decided to

join the Carmelite Sisters in Dili. There are two different groups of Carmelites in East Timor. One group are enclosed and the other are involved in active ministry such as caring for children in an orphanage, running a Medical Centre or Hospital and providing accommodation for visitors to East Timor. Since we are no longer providing support for Luciana we are able to sponsor another student, namely Ricardo Barreto. Some information about him will be provided next week.

- REFLECTION -

Today’s Gospel describes the last meeting of Jesus with the twelve. It is a meeting which must have been very tense for the disciples. Jesus knew quite well that Judas had already decided to betray him, and he makes clear reference to that. He knew that Peter was going to deny him three times, in spite of Peter’s protestations. He knew that all the other disciples were going to abandon him and run away. He knew that these, his closest friends, still could not understand, much less accept, that he had to

die on the cross and after three days rise from the dead, Jesus remains calm and in control of the situation, and then shows the greatest sign of friendship and love for his disciples by instituting the Eucharist. He was doing what he had taught his disciples on a previous occasion, that a person can show no greater love for his or her friends than to give his or her life for them. That is precisely what Jesus does at this last meeting, which we call the Last Supper. He gives his life for these not very laudable friends, by giving them his Body and his Blood, and later, that very night, by undergoing his passion and giving his life on the cross like an ordinary criminal. Many of us sometimes feel like Judas, or Peter, or the other disciples. We might feel that, like Judas, we have betrayed Jesus by committing serious sins, even such as murder, or violence, or abortion, or warmongering. Some of us might feel, like Peter, we have denied Jesus when we have been unfaithful to our spouses, or when we have lied, or cheated, or misinterpreted his commands to suit ourselves, and preached false spirituality, whether from the pulpit or by word and example. Some of us might feel that we have deserted Jesus, when we pass by someone hungry, homeless, sick, or crying for help, and not stopped to offer a helping hand. Perhaps, such responses are natural, but they are certainly not the responses that Jesus would want from us. We must remember that Jesus at no moment in time, under no circumstance ever stops loving us even to death on the cross. It is up to us to return to him, certain of forgiveness, of hope, and of infinite love.
