Amos cries out against those who exploit the
poor for the sake of extortion and greed. They
seek to serve only themselves rather than the
Lord. By giving ourselves to God rather than
money, we can truly pray with blameless
hands for all those in need, especially the poor
whom the Lord will raise up.

In today's gospel, Luke 16:1-13, Jesus presents a disconcerting
story, the Parable of the Dishonest Steward. A dishonest steward
squandered his master's property. When caught he devised a cun-
ning plan to save himself. Knowing that manual laborer did not
suit him and acknowledging that he was "ashamed to beg,"
the steward went to his master's debtors adjusting their debts.
By doing this, the steward assured their indebtedness to him and
guaranteed his welcome in their homes. When the master discov-
ered the steward's ploy, he does not get angry nor does he condemn
the man. Rather he "commended that dishonest steward for acting
prudently" (Luke 16:8).
There are as many different interpretations of this parable as there
are scripture scholars. Is the steward nothing more than a common
criminal? Or, is he a shrewd and astute businessperson? Why does
the master commend the steward for cheating him again? Is the
master just as corrupt as the steward? And what about the debtors?
Aren't they dishonest as well? Are they all rouges? Is there some
sort of honor among this group of thieves?
The message Jesus offers us is very straightforward. Our Lord is
not praising dishonest practices, he simply observes the ingenuity,
energy and determination the steward applied to save himself. If
we applied as much ingenuity and energy to building God's king-
dom as the steward did to save himself, our world would be a very
different place. As Jesus said, "the children of this world are more
prudent in dealing with their own generation than are the children
of light" (Luke 16: 8).
You have called us, O God,
to love and serve you as the one only God.
Make us wise and resourceful,
children of the light who continue your work in this world
with untiring concern for justice and the integrity of creation.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.
AMEN.

Today’s second collection is for the Society of
St. Vincent de Paul Georgia. Last year , with
more than 5,000 volunteers, and a dedicated
central support staff, St. Vincent de Paul delivered hope and help
over 116,000 people in need. This second collection is special be-
cause each dollar raised goes not only to helping people in our par-
ish area but also to helping people in need across the state. Our
gifts to this collection go directly to provide emergency shelter,
food, clothing and educational resources to those experiencing
hardship and crisis with the ultimate goal of achieving self-
sufficiency. We can, like Christ, serve the poorest of the poor
among us through our wholehearted support of St. Vincent de Paul
Georgia. Please be generous.

Blessed Mariam Thresia To be Canonized by Pope Francis on October 13
Early Life
Blessed Mariam Thresia was born on 26 April 1876 as
Thresia Mankidiyan in Kerala, India. Raised in the Syro-
Malabar Rite of the Catholic Church, her parents named her in honour
of St. Teresa of Avila, which would indicate the life of holiness and
contemplation that Thresia would achieve.
As a young child, she had an intense desire to love God, and she would
fast four times a week and pray the Rosary several times daily. Seeing
her daughter becoming very thin from all of her fasting, her mother
tried without much success to dissuade her from this severe form of
piety.
Young Thresia’s home life was not easy. When her family fell into
poverty, her father and brother often turned to drink to deal with their
situation. And sadly, her mother died when Thresia was twelve years
old, around the time her elementary school education also ended. So
young Thresia began to discern her own vocation in life.
She longed to live a life of contemplation, prayer, and penance in soli-
tude, but she soon abandoned this plan, turning instead to a life of ser-
vice. Continuing to attend her parish church with three companions, she
helped to clean it and decorate the sanctuary. In her love for Jesus, she
wanted to help the poor, nurse the sick, and comfort the lonely. By
being involved in charitable services, she selflessly served the people
of her neglected village, inspired by a deep devotion to Christ.
Vocation
From 1904, Thresia began to call herself Mariam Thresia in response to
a vision in which she believed that the Blessed Virgin Mary had asked
her to add “Mariam” to her name.
With her three companions, she formed a prayer group and an aposto-
late, visiting the poor and the sick, making no distinctions as to caste or
religion. They even broke with the cultural custom of not leaving the
house without a man to accompany them, provoking criticism from
people in the village.
Mariam Thresia was also devoted to the conversion of sinners, for
whom she prayed and fasted. She received especial encouragement in
this apostolate through her visions of the Holy Family. She believed
they guided her in her mission, particularly in the conversion of sin-
ners.
In 1903, she requested her bishop’s permission to build a house of soli-
tude for prayer. Instead, he suggested that she join a community called
the Congregation of the Franciscan Clarists, but she didn’t think it was
her calling. Mariam Thresia went to live with the Carmelite nuns at a
convent at Ollur, but she felt that this, too, was not the life God was
calling her to.
At last, in 1913, the bishop gave her permission to build a house of
prayer, where she and her three companions could live like hermits,
devoting themselves to austere lives of prayer and penance, while con-
tinuing their mission of service to the poor and the sick. This was the
founding of her new Congregation of the Holy Family (CHF), in which
Mariam Thresia was named the first superior and her companions
became postulants. They continued to minister to the sick and the poor,
and they also provided for the education of girls and cared for orphaned
children.
There were many spiritual experiences that characterized the life of
Mariam Thresia. She was said to have received the stigmata first in
1905, and it became more visible by 1909. People gathered to watch
her lifted high and hanging on her wall in the form of a crucifix every
Friday.

Miracles
The first miracle attributed to the intercession of Blessed Mariam
Thresia was that of Mathew D. Pellissery, who was born in 1956 with
congenital club feet. When he was fourteen years old, his family began
to fast and pray for a miraculous cure to his deformity. They prayed
and fasted for 33 days, and when he awoke on the morning of 21 Au-
gust 1970, he discovered that his right foot had straightened overnight.
His left foot was similarly healed the following year after a further 39
days of fasting and prayer seeking the intercession of Blessed Mariam
Thresia.
A second miracle was the healing of a baby in 2009. When he was
born, Christopher was not expected to survive. He had underdeveloped
lungs and three holes in his heart. When he began experiencing respira-
tory failure, doctors gave up hope for his life. Christopher’s grand-
mother brought a relic of Blessed Mariam Thresia from her home to
the hospital to place beside him, and the family prayed for her interces-
sion. Christopher is now ten years old.

Catholic Church through the reception of the Sacraments of
Initiation: Baptism (or a Profession of Faith for those previously
baptized in another Christian tradition), Confirmation, and Eucharist.

11 Week BIBLE STUDY Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come
Wednesdays 6:30-8:30 PM Next Session September 25 Facilitator: Alec MacDougall
Suggested Donation: $27/book
Unpack the Mysteries of Revelation Perhaps no book in the Bible fascinates people more than Revelation. Yet relatively few peo-ple have studied the book, especially from a Catholic perspective. This study shows how
the kingdom established by Christ in his Church is intimately connected with the king-
dom of heaven. Presenter Jeff Cavins pulls back the veil on the rich symbolism present in
Revelation. Discover what the mysterious figures and images of Revelation mean and
see how Revelation is more than an apocalyp-tic vision of the “end times.” Explore the
Church’s teaching on the second coming of Christ and the Last Judgment. Understand how God, the Divine Bridegroom, and the
Church, his spotless bride, enter into a heav-enly, holy, and mystical marriage every time
we celebrate Mass.

or Wednesday 10:00-12:00 PM
Facilitators: Howard Gault
& Elliott Marsh St. John Vianney Room
Cost: $27/book You will learn:
The Catholic teaching on salvation.
How to explain salvation to non-Christians
What is required for salva-tion—faith or works
What Paul really means by “works” not leading to salvation
How Christ’s death changed our relationship with God
The meaning of the difficult passages in Romans
How we can enter more deeply into Christ
Dr. Swafford and Cavins explain that salvation is not
merely the removal of a guilty verdict. Salvation is about
entering into Christ’s life and death and sharing in his
eternal Sonship.
That Man is You (TMIY) Fridays 6:00-7:30 AM
Loreto Hall
That Man is You! Is an oppor-tunity for fellowship for men and formation in the Catholic Faith. It honestly addresses the pressures and tempta-tions that men face in our modern culture, especially those relating to their roles as husbands and fathers. The program harmonizes current social and medical science with the teachings of the Church and the wisdom of the saints to develop the vision of man fully alive!
Knowing the true answers to these ques-tions matters! There are very important - life-changing - reasons for everything we believe and do as Catholics! In Catholic 101 you will learn about these things so that you can, grow in your relationship with Christ through His Church, and effectively help others do the same. This Series will meet 1X/month, usually 4th week of the month. Each month we will present a different topic and there will be three sessions to choose from with the same presentation each time.
TOPIC FOR SEPTEMBER:
In a world grown hostile to God, it is more important than ever to be able to defend him. In this class you will learn how to answer the common objections of Atheism with sound philosophy and common sense.
This class will meet for 2 weeks. CHOOSE FROM: (same presentation each time)
Mondays, September 23 & 30, 11:30am-2:00pm
Tuesdays, September 24 & October 1, 10:00-12:30pm
Tuesdays, September 24 & October 1, 6:30-9:00pm
Location: St. John Vianney Room
This class seeks to present the case for why belief in God is plausible and reasonable from a nonreligious perspec-tive. If you are already a believer, this class will give you some reasons why that is the case. If you are not a believer, we would like to provide important infor-mation that supports belief in God, and shows that people of faith are not irration-al fools.
