ST. MARY CHURCH! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! PAINESVILLE, OH!
Dear Parishioners,!!The month of May begins on Tuesday and May is a month dedicated in a special way to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This may be an appropriate time to begin to think about Mother’s Day. They say Mother’s Day is one very important day for the economy. More money is spent calling, buying for, and visiting our Mothers than most holidays, with the exception of Christmas. This is certainly most appropriate since there is no price that can be put on the love and care that our Mothers show to the ones they love. In the case of those who have a mother who is deceased, the economy doesn’t grow but the sentiment and spiritual care for our mothers is still most important. As a matter of fact, the memory a Mother’s love has the possibility of being as strong or even stronger after a Mother is deceased. !!This brings me to anticipate May as Mary’s special month. Mary’s special place in our Catholic Faith Tradition is because she has a special maternal love which is expressed in our art and devotion to Mary. The image of Mary is the most depicted image in the history of Christian art. When it is difficult to pray, bring an image of Mary to your prayer and things will get better. My priesthood has been filled with Mary’s presence especially through the parishes where I have lived the majority of my life and priesthood. I grew up in Immaculate Conception Parish in Willoughby. I was first a pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in La Libertad, El Salvador and have spent the last 20 years as pastor of St. Mary’s, Painesville. I have made a pilgrimage to Mexico to visit the basilica dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe and when I visit Rome, I always make a pilgrimage to the Church of Santa Maria in Trastevere the first church dedicated to Mary in the Western world. ! !I hope that Mary’s presence in your lives is a blessing and that this month of May gives you the opportunity to remember, give thanks for and pray for your birth mother and commemorate the place of Mary, Jesus’ Mother, in your life. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hours of our death. AMEN.!! Fr. Steve Vellenga!
A Prayer for Our First Communicants
Lord Jesus,
Bless the children coming forward to receive You. Give them a hunger for this sacred food so that You
are who they turn to for comfort, guidance, and wisdom. May their hands, extended in anticipation of your Precious Body and Blood, inspire all of us to cherish this sacred Sacrament. Amen. !Home Missions Collection!Support the Catholic Home Missions Appeal today! Right now, over 40 percent of dioceses in the United States are considered home mission territory because they are unable to fund the essential pastoral work needed in their communities. Your support funds programs, such as religious education, seminary formation, and lay ministry training, to build vibrant faith communities right here in the United States. Please be generous. More information can be found at www.uscb.org/home!missions.
Next Weekend, May 5th & 6th, is Share the Bread Sunday. The food pantry is in need of non perishable food items, such as peanut butter, jelly, tuna cans, cereal, soup, macaroni & cheese, pasta sauce, and side dishes. Please place your donations in the bins located at the church entrances. !Thank you for your support and generosity.!!!

FAMILY PERSPECTIVE!Jesus, the true vine, expects us, the branches, to bear fruit. Because he loves us, he prunes us so that we will bear better fruit. Parents know the challenging work of disciplining, their children with patient love each day. Discipline, like pruning, shapes them to be better disciples.!
