Who Am I?

I am a llama. I’m a greatpack animal. I cancarry 25-30 percent ofmy own weight for 5-8miles! I have two-toedfeet that keep me niceand sturdy. I can’t giveadults rides on myback, but I love givinglittle kids rides. I almostalways have soft fur.

The Early Years

When a llama is bornthey’re called a “Cria”. A cria is bornwith short soft fur.Since llamas aremammals, crias are bornalive. A cria isusually up and nursingin about a hour and ahalf. When a cria growsup it will grow to be45” at the shoulder,and 5ft at the neck andhead, it’ll weigh 280pounds and it will liveto be about 15-25 yearsold

Habitat Sweet HabitatLlamas are found on

mountains, and farms.Some people even keepthem as pets. Llamasdon’t hibernate, they onlymove up and down themountain. In the summerthe llamas move to thetop of the mountain whereit’s cooler. In the winter,llamas move to the bottomof the mountain where it’swarmer.

What’s On The Menu?

Llamas are herbivores.They eat grass,herbs,and other plants.Llamas are ruminants,which means that theirstomach has three partsto it. They partially chewtheir food, then later itregurgitates, or comesback up as cud.

Making TracksLlamas have two-toed feet with toenails

on them, and pads on the bottom.You can find these tracks in themud on a farm, or in dirt on amountain.

Simply IrresistibleLlamas do have a voice. Usually they

hum or make weird noises. Whenllamas are mad, angry, overheated,or trying to protect their family,they scream, spit, and kick.

Where In The World?In the year 1564 B.C, Spanish

explorers found the first llama onthe Andes Mountain. TheSpanish explorers told theirpeople that there was close to20,000 of them on themountain!Even though they werefound in South America,they aresometimes found on farms inNorth America too!
