Niels Bugge Cartoon Award 2014 was a fascinating contest. It is always a new experience when yousee how the thinking of the artists are quite different the ones from the others. We have got extra-ordinary artists with brilliant ideas. Unfortunately there are only three prizes. At the end mathematicshelp us. The cartoonist who has the most points finally... wins. The three winners are great cartoonistsand brilliant thinkers.

Andrei Popov, from Russia, was from the beginning at the top , with all three cartoons he sent us. Of course he could win only one prize. The first one. A romantic with subtle, reflectivehumor and a sharp style.

Bruce Mackinnon, from Canada, after many questions we were asked, finally with onecartoon... won the second prize. A brilliant artist with a clear strong line, raw, until it hurts.

Pawel Kuczynski, from Poland, someone who calls us to reflect. The message is understan-dable only at the second look. Fairy beautiful work, romantic, quiet, striking painting. His picture could tell us many, many things.

We celebrate and congratulate the winners.:--)

After we have seen, that the 1st Niels Bugge Cartoon Awardwas a great success, we dared to organize a second award.

Claus Seidel made it possible to present several selected car-toons from the first competition in the Royal Library BlackDiamond in Copenhagen. This is the greatest recognitionthat we could reach with cartoons in our small country.

It is the proof that we are on the right track.

The theme of this year's competition was a little more diffi-cult than we have actually thought. But that made thewhole thing even more exciting. The Jury have selected the105 best cartoons that we proudly present in this catalog.

Our special thanks goes to all the cartoonists, the jury, thesponsors and to everyone who have promoted and activelysupported the only Danish Cartoon Award.

We are already looking forward to the third Niels BuggeCartoon Award!

Nowadays water has become a legitimate inter-national concern. That is why this topic must betreated with humour. Because humour allowsyou to step back and say: "What is really impor-tant to us ?" With humour you can see thingsdifferently, maybe you can better understandsome points of view and future solutions. Wemust be optimistic. Thanks to cartooning, theconstructive spirit will prevail over destruction.Because, as the saying goes, "When you throwthem in the sea, the rubber sinks but the pencilswims".

In a way it is deeply ironic that we are all so fascinated by the discovery of water on Earth’s neighbo-ring planets. On September 27th 2013, the American National Aeronautics & Space Administrationannounced that Mars consisted of 2 percent water. Once, they theorized, there had been more of itand thus possibly also life on the planet, but now there is too little water for anything to survive. Why do we as humans find it so hard to understand that we have to treat our habitat with far greaterrespect? Why can we not comprehend that our ability to exist in harmony with nature will be crucialto the future happiness of our children and grandchildren? It is my hope that the choice of “Oceans”as the theme for this year’s Niels Bugge Cartoon Award will be a small, but significant step towardsa serious negotiation of some of the greatest challenges of the coming years: The state of the oceans, the climate and our common habitat. Cartoonists can help change the world by distilling giant issuesinto concise and poetic statements that the rest of us can understand and act upon. The fact thatwe have received a tidal wave of illustrations for Niels Bugge Cartoon Award 2014 only serves tounderline the severe importance of the environmental challenges we face.

In principle, it is possible to organize the first cartoon contest. It sounds paradoxical, but more effortsare to be invested in organizing the second one. And, if you hold the third contest, it is already a tra-dition. The Niels Bugge Cartoon Award is on its best way to become traditional owing to efforts oforganizers and with the help of international jury which is at the same time a qualified advisor andwhich is composed of experienced FECO editors and artists to avoid possible mistakes and ensurethat everything is done at the highest level. High criteria and objectivity are certainly implied. By itsawards, excellent catalogue and over a thousand of received works, the first International Niels BuggeCartoon Contest Denmark has already positioned itself in the first league of international events ofthe kind. Let’s wish it a safe voyage on restless ocean waters of cartoon art. The contest is in our and yours hands!

Vand var temaet for den 11. Hollandske internationale Cartoonfestival. Men det var 12 år siden. Tide-rne skifter. Oceanerne forandres. Men alvorsfuld tale hjælperikke altid.

Water was the theme of the 11th Dutch International Cartoonfestival. But that was 12 years ago.Times are changing. Oceans are changing. High time to organize once again a cartooncontest aroundthis theme. Oceans are changing in a bad way. We can yell, we can complain and tell the world thatwe’re killing our main source of life. But serious talk not always helps. A better way is to pack yourmessage in humourous drawing, that makes people think and laugh at the same time. That’s whatcartoonists do. Cleaning the earth and the waters with humor! As member of the jury I was surprised. Many oroginal ideas. Also some very old jokes. Cartoonists who mention a problem and give us anidea how to solve these matters in a funny way. A cartoonist cannot change the world. He can justhelp us to realize what we’re doing to make jokes about how stupid mankind can be!

The large national and international support for the awardis a great pleasure. To be able to contribute with a global influence on our Danish cartooning societycould eventually help gather a lot of respect for our profession. We can present the drawings bothhere at Bugge's Hotel, at the Royal Library and in a book- it's marvellous. I therefore thank all peoplebehind this price and especially Poul Nielsen and Zoran Petrovic for giving us the opportunity to par-ticipate. This year, 25% of our members have chosen to participate in the future it will hopefully bemany more.

In the cartoon contests there are a lot of themeswhich are redundant or surprisingly original, many of them concern public social problems, some of them are funny, most of them make usworry. We have chosen the theme 'Oceans' notonly because it is a topical issue, destined to be-come very important in the future of human-kind, but also because that topic forces us tothink and reflect, as a cartoonist or as a viewer.Since cartoons are a clever form of expression,we want to present this wise and essentialtheme in a funny way and, at the same time, asa thoughtfully considered topic.

Human being, as all kind of life, came from the stars and landed on earth through the very firstocean. This big one ocean which is our foster mother, much more than the land where we, now,cut trees and plant transgenic corn. But, as we maltreat land, we have been maltreating our life’sspring and now oceans are quite ill because of our domestic and industrial activities: less fish butmore plastic, less pure water but more oil, less coral but more garbage, less blue but more grey…That’s why we must do our best to save oceans of ourselves if we still want to have a future on thisplanet. So, thanks to all of you, dear fellow cartoonists, for the amazing drawings you did and sentto Niels Bugge contest on this theme. We do hope they will help people to be more conscious ofour debt to oceans and therefore to respect it more and more.
