Welcome to VAF 2016Viborg Animation Festival –

lovingly known as VAF – is Denmark’s largest animation festival

and a celebration of the possibilities of animation. This year, the 4th edition

of the festival will take place from the 26th of September to the 2nd of October

in Viborg and surrounding areas.

Staying true to tradition, you will be able to see a broad selection of films for free in cinemas in

Viborg, Bjerringbro and Karup during the festival. Bring your family to see “The Peanuts Movie”

and “The Little Prince” or explore narrower films for youth and adults; like acclaimed films “Anomalisa” and “Nuts”.

Game enthusiasts will have their curiosity sated at our Game Expo where we will exhibit over 20 new games along with the newest technology in

Virtual Reality.

In Viborg Kunsthal, art and animation will melt together in a challenging way while Viborg Museum will exhibit art from the locally produced, Oscar-nominated film “Song of the Sea”. In Viborg City Hall, the works of Réka Bucsi – VAF Artist of the Year – will be exhibited.

FESTIVAL CAFÉIn the Festival Café, you can socialize over food and drinks and also meet students and people from the animation industry. In the cosy film corner, you can sit and watch films in the soft surroundings. The café is decorated with posters from some of the many international films playing at the festival.In the Festival Café, you will be able to buy snacks and drinks as well as festival merchandise such as VAF dogs, T-shirts, posters and more.Outsidethe café, there will be a Colombian Food Truck that serves genuine Colombian food.

FOOD-TRUCKColombian foodThe Festival Café offers Colombian, vegetarian street food with loads of different flavours – served in a friendly Colombian manner. La Tienda food truck will be placed right next to the Café.Enjoy veggie burgers, empanadas, paisan dish or fried bananas with guacamole; or a child-friendly alternative. Around 50% of La Tienda’s ingredients are organic.Students will be able to purchase discount coupons in the Café. NB: There are only a limited amount. The food may be enjoyed inside the Café.

EURANIMOn Saturday night, October 1st, the building Arsenalet will literally come to life when a group of European students make their experimental animation perform on the façade of the house.The technique is called ‘video mapping’ and is the medium used in the project Euranim; an European project which will run over the course of the next two years.Two students from each of the partnering schools will work together in groups during a Euranim Workshop, led by Támas Zádor (Recontres Audiovisuelles) and Lasse Andersen (Dark Matters). Their work will be showcased as a part of Viborg Animation Festival.The project is led by the cultural organisation Rencontres Audiovisuelles (Lille, France) and is co-financed by Creative Europe Programme in the European Union.

VAF ARTIST OF THE YEAR RÉKA BUCSIRéka Bucsi (born 1988) is Hungarian and earned her degree from Moholy Nagy University of Arts and Design in Budapest.Her graduation film, ‘Symphony no. 42’, was shortlisted for an Oscar at the Academy Awards in 2014. Her films have been screened at big festivals such as Berlinale, SXSW and Sundance, and she has won over 50 international awards. Réka is very inspired by the world surrounding her; people, animals, nature, music and films. Her style is unique and peculiar and her films are often a commentary on modern-day society.As VAF Artist of the Year, Réka has designed 5 postcards, posters and also this year’s VAF trailer. In addition, you will be able to see her pictures on gables and walls in Viborg.Réka’s newest film, ‘Love’, will screen during VAF on September 29th at 21.00 in the programme “Short Films for Adults”. (see page 20).

GAME EXPODid you know that we have a rather huge community of game developers in Viborg?

Come and experience it for yourself when we open the doors to this year’s Viborg Game Expo. The action will take place from September 30 to October 2 when local game developers show off their products.

As a completely new feature at VAF, we will offer our visitors an opportunity to try out Virtual Reality during the festival week.In the VR-park, you will be able to put on a pair of VR-glasses and explore drawings in 3D.The idea is to create an experience around different drawings, which are produced by students from The Animation Workshop.

Drawings are normally done in 2D but whole sculptures will be featured in 3D in the VR-park. Children and adults can later experience these drawings as they move around the sculptures wearing the VR-glasses.

ODEN TIL KLODEN (ODE TO THE PLANET)

In the middle of the earth’s deepest primordial soup, where the darkness is thickest, unknown life pulsates in all shapes and sizes. The soup purrs bleakly but lovingly. The installation opens at 18.00 where a glass of wine will be offered.At 23.00, Mother Earth is celeberated in an improvised musical performance where experimental, electronic music is united with animation.KAI OKE, which consists of 2 sound artists and 1 animator, creates transcending installation art through musical improvisations and animation.Time: Friday, September 30, 18.00 – 24.00. The movie is an epic action-adventure which takes pla-ce in Japan. The clever and kind Kubo makes a living of telling stories in his village. The movie tells the story of O-Ei, the daughter of the famous artist Hokusai. O-Ei, who herself is a talented painter, spends most of her time helping her father. Nuts! is the mostly true story about John Romulus Brinkley, a Kansas doctor, who in 1917 discovered that he could cure erectile dysfunction by transplanting goat testicles. The story only escalates from this point forward. One of the most colourful and controversial persons in the history of alternative medicine is the main character in this semi-animated documentary.

Little Houdini tells the story of how Harry became the famous ‘Houdini’. The story is set in New York in 1886 where the 12-year-old Harry lives with his parents. But the road to fame turns out to be much longer and harder than he expected.Ernie Biscuit (21 min.) is a film by Adam Elliot, the direc-tor behind Mary & Max. Ernie Buscuit is a short film about a dead Parisian taxidermist whose life is turned upside down when a dead pigeon shows up at his doorstep.

Viborg Animation Festival would like to present a new tradition – Classic of the Year!This year, we have chosen to screen the American movie ‘The Land Before Time’. Many who grew up in the 90s will remember this sweet – and at times sad – movie about the dinosaur Littlefoot who goes on an epic adventure to discover the Great Valley. On his trip, Littlefoot meets four other young dinosaurs and together they form strong friendships that carry them through many dangerous situations.

From the largest elephant to the smallest mouse – the city Zootopia is a paradise for animals. This year, Viborg Animation Festival is launching a new programme – the Student Film Competition – that aims to celebrate animation talents from film and animation schools in Europe.23 films will compete for the two VAF prizes ‘TAW StaffPick – Ginger Award’ and the ‘VAF Audience Award’. After the screening, the audience will be able to vote for their favorite.From poetic and funny interpretations of daily life to symbolic and moving tales about the human condition, this energizing and refreshing mix of stories and animation techniques will offer something for every taste.The winner of the main prize, ‘TAW Staff Pick’, will receive an artist residency at the Open Workshop where they can work on a project, along with 1.000 euro to spend on travels and expenses. SONG OF THE SEAExhibition at Viborg Museum

The film ‘Song of the Sea’ is a co-production between Ireland, Denmark, France, Belgium and Luxembourg. A big part of the Oscar nominated film was animated right here in Viborg at the animation studio, Nørlum. The exhibition consists of a selection of original drawings and many digital prints that show how the movie was made – from storyboard to final picture. ”POLLEN MESSAGES”Ann Lislegaard exhibition at Viborg KunsthalThe time-based media used by the visual artist Ann Lis-legaard has made it possible for her to tell stories with completely new image formations. She is particularly engaged by ideas from Science Fiction movies and liter-ature; here she finds an alternative approach to language, storytelling, gender roles and ideas about the future.The artwork Pollen Messages is a 3D animation, which will be displayed on new double screens. The offset for the story is Jeff Noons sci-fi novel “Pollen” where the limits between flowers and humans are blurred. COSMOPOLITANISMMichelle & Uri Kranot exhibition at Viborg KunsthalCosmopolitanism challenges us to think about a universal belonging that doesn’t confine itself to a city, a region or to a national boundary. It invites us to think about the possibility of belonging to the whole of the world. To be Cosmopolitan is to be open to ‘the other’, to embrace diversity and feel responsibility for our fellow humans. The exhibition at Viborg Kunsthal includes original artwork and video installation and runs between August and November 2016. MICHANIKOS Amalie Smith exhibition at Viborg KunsthalThe exhibition Michanikos takes its starting point in the Greek mushroom-diver-dance, which was developed from the mechanincal movements of diver’s disease.
