FRIDAYS SATURDAY

It was the early 1990s, and pop music was about to experience a major sea change. Goodtime hair metal was out, and grunge—a fusion of punk, heavy metal, and pop—was taking over the airwaves. Many bands emerged in the wake of the seminal grunge rock band, Nirvana, including the Gin Blossoms.

Formed in 1987, the Gin Blossoms finally broke in 1992 with New Miserable Experience, a gem of a pop compilation that kept the band on the charts for almost three years thanks to singles like “Hey Jealousy,” “Al-lison Road,” “Mrs. Rita,” and “Found Out About You.” Their 1996 follow-up, Congratulations I’m Sorry, sent two more hits up the charts: “Follow You Down,” which spent nearly two months in the Top Ten, and “As Long As It Matters,” which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Performance by a Duo or Group.

In 2005, the band reformed to record their third full-length album in over 10 years. Major Lodge Victory landed on the Billboard 200 and was the No. 10 Indie album of the year. Their most recent album, 2010’s No Chocolate Cake, shot straight to No. 1 on Amazon and hit Billboard’s Top 200 at #73 and the Indie chart at #14.

Over the years, Gin Blossoms have toured over 25 different countries, including a five-city tour of Iraq in 2010. They come to Isleta Resort & Casino on October 11, with special guest Spin Doctors, a 90s pop band whose hits “Two Princes” and “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong” still enjoy heavy radio rotation.

As we reported in our Aug. 2014 issue, Atlantic City has been expe-riencing an alarming decline, due in part to oversaturation of the market in the Northeastern United States. Once the nation’s second-largest gambling market after Las Vegas, Atlantic City is now down from 12 casinos at the beginning of the year to 8 currently. The Showboat closed this August, and the Revel, made infamous in re-

cent weeks due to the Ray Rice wife abuse scandal, followed suit on Sept. 2.

Now, as predicted, Trump Plaza Hotel & Casino closed its doors last month as well, a handful of diehard gamblers who stayed to the bitter end making their trek out the exits one last time. The glittery chandeliers dimmed, the doors closed, and an era is now an entry in the history books.

The Fall of Trump TowersBy Bill Previtti

On the Moveand

in the Groove

Yeah, sure, the man who invented dice. That’s like pinpointing the first person to eat an oyster. (A brave man, indeed.)

These kinds of stories always teeter on the edge of partly truth and partly fiction. For instance, I had an uncle, Uncle Mike, who said he worked for the guy who invented cottage cheese. Uncle Mike said the guy went bananas because he couldn’t figure out if the cheese was done—or not. He went to his grave insisting we are consuming an un-finished product.

So who invented dice?It was probably one of your ancestors—

no, not probably, it was one of your ances-tors.

Which one, though? Hard to say. From the Middle East to the Far East, Europe to the British Isles, it seems like dice were always there.

We cannot say they were an invention of the upper class, the nobility, any more than we can claim they were the brainchild of a working class fellow. Nope, dice came along like language came along. It’s like asking, who invented talking?

What we do know is that the name, “dice,”

THE MAN WHO INVENTED DICE

is derived from the ancient French “de” and the Latin “datum,” meaning “some-thing that is given or played.” But that still doesn’t’t tell us who or whom in-vented dice.

Okay, let me see if I can put some of this in focus: Imagine yourself in ancient Samaria, that chunk of land covering most of what is now Iraq, Syria and most of Iran. If you can believe it, those desert dwellers were dicing for fun and profit long before Christianity became a house-hold word. As were the Egyptians—dice have been found in the burial chambers of the pharaohs. The Greeks likewise created dice games for both children and ladies to enjoy. The Romans, well, they gambled with dice on every proposi-tion available, including meals, animals, slaves, seaside villas, and clothing. You know the Roman soldiers who “cast lots” to see which of them would take home the robe Jesus wore at his crucifixion? Yup, that was dice.

Much later on, dice in the Old World were scraped from gemstones, elephant tusks, brass, and even marble. And here in our own country, dice were found on lands occupied by the Arapahoe, Iroquois, Algonquin, and Narragansett. Those creative First Americans fashioned dice from the knucklebones of antelope, bison, and deer.

From 3,000 B.C. to today, children and adults alike have carved out and played with dice.

But that still doesn’t answer our ques-tion: who invented dice?

The answer? We all did, one fun-loving soul at a time.

Next month: Who invented craps?

JOKE OF THE MONTHA man pulls up a chair at the dinner table

and prepares to enjoy a meal after a long day. Instead of dinner, he gets a whack in the head with a frying pan.

“What was that for?” he asks his wife.“What was that for? That was for the

Sweet Mary Lou I found scribbled on a sheet of paper in your pants pocket while doing the laundry yesterday,” she replies.

The man explains, “Last week I went to the races and Sweet Mary Lou was the horse I bet on.”

Satisfied with this explanation, the man’s wife serves dinner and they enjoy the eve-ning together.

One week later the man sits down to the same table to have the same dinner and receives the same whack on the head with the frying pan.

“What the hell was that for?” he asks.

His wife responds: “Your horse phoned.”

Casino Entertainer October 2014 24

Page 25: Casino Entertainer - October 2014

A common mistake among blackjack players is that they rarely, if ever, take into account the cards received by the other players on the table, focusing in-stead only on their own hand and on the dealer’s. That’s because most players grew up with a one-size-fits-all “basic strategy” plan that is blind to what goes on during a round and doesn’t adjust to the realities at hand.

For example, take the player in third base in this single-deck card example. With a 15-point hand versus the deal-er’s 7, basic strategy teaches players to hit (take a card), no matter what’s on the table. They’ll often say, “Oh, you took my cards. Oh well.” And then they hit their hand, even though it’s become a ridiculous move.

That would be the worst thing to do in this situation—for a number of reasons. Ask yourself: What are your “outs,” the cards that would give you a decent score if you hit your 15?

Preferably you’d want a 5 or 6, to give you a good chance of winning. But even before the other players at the table make their moves, you observe that one 5 and two 6s were dealt, meaning you have a less-than-normal chance of get-ting these most-desired cards, or “outs.”

Then four low cards in a row are dealt to the players before you. This is high-ly unusual in a single-deck game, and should be a warning to you. You now have a higher-than-normal likelihood of getting one of the high cards that will bust you (make you go over 21 and lose).

In addition, look at the second graph-

ic. It shows the remaining high-versus-low cards in the un-dealt mix, where I’ve put the 7s in with the high because they’d bust you, and the aces in with the low because they would not. Even with-out the warning signals I mentioned above, you have—just on the un-dealt card mix alone—a 3-to-2 likelihood of busting.

Now take a look at the third graphic, showing the “stiff makers,” the cards that would give the dealer a two-card point total most likely to bust with a third card if in the hole. That reveals that the dealer’s likely busting rate is nearly 40 percent—in the range of a dealer’s 4, 5, and 6 under normal conditions.

Get it? Good. So, what should you do? Everything is telling you

to stand here: card flow evi-dence (the four-card streak of low cards before your turn), the un-dealt mix odds (based upon the cards that would help versus bust you) and the odds

of the dealer getting a “stiff maker” leading to a likely busted hand.

This example, by the way, demon-strates how many considerations in-form your move from a mathematical and scientific basis. I spent many years studying the little-known card flow and card behavior sciences. These some-times reveal more telling information than simple percentages can.

Forget the NSA. Seems that some of the most comprehensive surveil-lance is happening at our nation’s casinos.

Which is a good thing in the case of Ray Rice.

Back at the beginning of Septem-ber, a video of him punching and dragging his then-fiance from an el-evator at the Revel Casino in Atlan-tic City, New Jersey, hit the airwaves and the Internet with a vengeance.

Outrage justly ensued, but the question remained: who leaked the security tape?

According to several sources who spoke with NBC for an online story that news outlet published Sept. 16, it

could only have been a senior casino employee—they are the only ones with knowledge of what goes on be-hind the security camera scenes. The sources added that the videos were never turned over to the NFL by the casino itself; they were instead sent first to TMZ, who broke the story on Sept. 8.

Putting Casino Entertainment

into PerspectiveBy John G. Brokopp

John G. Brokopp is a freelance journalist and author. He writes regularly on casino gambling.

John can be reached at [email protected]

Dear Mark: What do you think of a blackjack player who always stands with 12 or more, no matter what the dealer is showing? The player there-fore never busts, and wins all of the times when the house does bust. You would still use basic strategy for splits and doubling. Since the only advan-tage the house has is the player gets to bust first, wouldn’t this simple ap-proach favor the player? Peter C.

I am glad, Peter, you mentioned those two words, “basic strategy,” since ba-sic strategy advises hitting plenty of those stiff hands. When using a never-bust strategy, you are giving the casino a 5 percent advantage, whereas when you use strict basic strategy, you are only giving the casino about a half of

one percent edge.Without considering depletion of the

deck, let’s take the player’s 12-hand as an example. With a 12, you have a 9 out of 13 chance of not busting if you take a hit. Likewise, if you decide against hitting, your only chance of winning with a 12 is for the dealer to bust, and he has the same exact chance as you (69.2 percent) of not busting hitting his/her hand.

Granted, Peter, many times you will not win any additional money by hit-ting, but basic strategy does what it’s supposed to do, which is keep you from losing more of your hard-earned cash than you should. Losing players, Peter, employ a neverbust strategy. The cost: the greenbacks in their wal-lets.

All games should be played using the best strategies to help you come out a winner. This is especially true for casino games, because your hard-earned money is at stake.

Here are a few pointers for you beginners and casual casino-goers to keep in mind the next time you tackle the slots or give the roulette wheel a spin.

Inexperienced players are naturally attracted to video slots with multi-line, multi-coin play functions. These high tech electronic mar-vels are a far cry from their mechanical reel-spinning cousins of yes-teryear, and their interactive play features, second screen bonus round components, and attractive themes make them appealing to a broad audience. But inexperienced gamers usually don’t have a clue as to what machine to play, which denomination to select, or how much to bet.

After you select a game, always remember that your best chance to win is to bet maximum number of lines. The numbers vary, so it’s wise to check before you sit down. Some games have nine lines; oth-ers have 15, 20, 25, 50, 100 lines, or more. The more lines, the more money it’s going to take to bet the max.

When you’ve found a machine you like, you should decide how many coins to play per line. This decision is dictated by your bankroll, with the caveat that even penny games can amount to dollars per spin. The coins-per-line option usually varies from as low as one, two, or three coins, graduating upward into multiples of five.

Just remember that activating the maximum number of lines is the key to maximizing your potential to win something on any given spin. The number of coins you bet per line increases the amount you win.

Beginning players also fail to take advantage of winning opportuni-ties at the roulette wheel. Roulette is a game that appeals to inexperi-enced recreational gaming enthusiasts because there is minimal strat-egy required, the pace is slow, and the premise is easy: Pick a number from 1 to 36, keeping in mind that American roulette wheels also have a 0 and 00 to give the house an edge.

The most common strategy is to bet a number “straight up,” which pays 35-to-1 if it hits, or perhaps wagering on one of the even-money propositions, including odd/even, red/back, or high (18 through 36)/low (1 through 18).

Roulette players owe it to themselves to expand their horizons by learning to make a bet on groups of numbers, something any dealer will be happy to assist you with. For example, you can make a bet on six numbers (payoff is 5-to-1), four numbers (8-to-1), three numbers (11-to-1), or two numbers (17-to-1). You can also wager on a column of numbers or a group of a dozen numbers. The payoff in either case is 2-to-1.

The house advantage on all of the wagers listed above is the same, 5.26 percent, so it’s not as if you’re looking for an edge. You’re just looking for variety and the opportunity to “work” your stack of chips.
