Case Study - Utility Detection Survey Overview The project aim is to map all detectable buried utility services and to update the current Ordnance Survey tile with changes in building footprints. The Survey was completed in accordance with TSA guidelines as a Level 4 Survey. The campus grounds are located in Lancaster city centre and Carlisle city centre. The Severn Partnership Utility team spent approximately 4 weeks surveying the Lancaster Campus and 2 weeks at the Carlisle campus. The Sites consisted of a mixture of well-maintained parkland, landscaped gardens, roads, car parks, pedestrian walkways, artificial sports pitch, buildings and areas of vegetation. The site was open to the public and vehicle access at all times. Subsurface Mapping The detection and mapping of underground services include: pipes, cables, ducts and culverts using a range of survey techniques such as GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar), electromagnetic location, manhole inspection, CCTV and even subsurface laser scanning. The University of Cumbria required the accurate locating and mapping of underground utility services for potential future development works at two of its university campus.

• Detailing methods used, data quality review, highlighting areas of interest, evaluation of traced utilities against Statutory plan information and further recommendations based on the client’s objectives.

• Schematic drawing and photograph of all manhole chambers including, invert levels, flow direction, pipe material and notes on condition.
