With the end of the year fast approaching, we are starting to prepare for membership renewals at the CARM offi ce. As we begin to prepare the packages to send out to

you, I would like to take this time to remind you of the many member benefi ts that we off er to you, our members and let you know about some of the options we are currently looking into for next year.

Enhance Your Skills and Learn from Others

The Education and Training committee has been reviewing several options for course delivery during the fall and winter months. While the construction industry doesn’t appear to slow down during the winter months as it may have years ago, we do fi nd that our course off erings go over well during the late fall and winter months. We are working with other organizations, such as the Manitoba Construction Sector Council to offer innovative continuing education and career development programs that are specifi cally designed for the construction industry. Investing in training for your employees is an excellent retention tool and CARM will continue to look for courses that are relevant and specifi c to the industry in our area. Seminars on Profi table Contracting and the Manitoba Builders’ Lien Act are being off ered this fall to kick off the education season and we are looking into others that will be off ered in the new year.

Make a Diff erence for Your Industry

CARM practices advocacy on behalf of our members, mainly through our Government Aff airs Committee. Currently the issues that this committee has selected to address relate to the release of holdbacks to subcontractors and development processes with the City of Brandon. CARM has spearheaded a Development Task Force to work with the City of Brandon and the Chamber of Commerce to provide a venue for open communication to share ideas, feedback and suggestions for the best interests of all parties.

Connect with Construction Service Purchasers

This handy reference manual provides a complete alphabetical listing of all CARM member companies; including address, telephone, fax and email information, as well as the name of each company’s contact person(s). Updates to the information are sent out regularly during the year and it includes a Buyer’s Guide section to cross-reference products and services that each of our members provide. We are also pleased to host this listing and buyers guide information on the new CARM website for purchasers of construction services to have easy access to your information. The membership renewal packages will include confi rmation of your company information and selection of buyers guide categories to ensure everything is up-to-date.

Off er More to Your Employees

Your employees are your most valuable asset. With a highly competitive labour market companies are continually looking for a competitive advantage. CARM is pleased to work with AQ

Heather DoddsGeneral Manager

Group Solutions to off er individually designed benefi t programs and group retirement packages to member fi rms with as few as three employees. Member companies are eligible for rates that are lower than those available to individual fi rms. The CARM plan has also been designed with a unique lay-off provision to accommodate the needs of the construction industry. This program can help you recruit new employees and retain the experienced members of your team.

Create Business Contacts

Throughout the year, there are three main events hosted by CARM to provide an opportunity for our members to meet with each other and develop relationships outside of the job site or company offi ces. Each year in the winter we host a curling bonspiel at Riverview Curling Club, in the late spring a golf tournament at various golf courses and in the fall a banquet to enjoy a nice dinner and evening of entertainment. Join us at the events to make new contacts and branch out your business network.

Access to Reference Material

Our planroom is host to a library of construction-related documents, building code books, standard specifi cation information, and current legislation related to the industry. CARM members have access to visit our offi ce and to view the reference material any time during offi ce hours.

Stay Connected with Opportunities

Regular and online members have access to our physical planroom where we host project documents for open tenders and these members can borrow the documents overnight to see if they are interested in bidding on the project. The projects being hosted are listed in the weekly Project News e-bulletin that is sent along with industry relevant information such as tendering policy changes. Our online members enjoy access to the project documents 24-hours a day through their online access to our planroom. We have recently renovated in our offi ce and welcome you to join us for a tour around the planroom if you haven’t been in to see us lately.

Reduce Your Expenses

The Membership and Member Services committee is reviewing the exclusive discounts CARM members enjoy to bring more options to you and your employees. We currently enjoy discounts at Christie’s Offi ce Plus, Marks Work Wearhouse and several other businesses and are looking to add vendors for safety supplies, restaurants, banks and many others. We will be announcing the new programs early in the new year.

As you watch the mail for your 2014 membership renewal package, and consider your investment in CARM for next year, you can be confi dent that we are working hard for our industry and continue to add services to provide value for your dollar. Your support and commitment to the industry is valuable and as we move forward in continuing to develop and enhance our service we will do our best to provide you the best service possible.

Our centennial celebration has now come and gone but the afterglow remains in what was truly a memorable evening. The fi nishing touches made all the diff erence right down to the beautiful decorations from Black Tie Events which gave the night a little extra sparkle!

On Friday, October 25, 2013, a crowd of 295 gathered in the Regency Ballroom of the Royal Oak Inn & Suites. Following a cocktail hour featuring served appetizers, we enjoyed a prime rib buff et with all the trimmings and a program emceed by Tyler Glen of 94.7 Star FM. Ken Hardy, CARM president delivered a President’s message highlighting some of the work done by our Association over the past year and the optimistic future of our industry in the area. Chris Johnston, CARM Vice-President and Cheryl Schwalm, CARM Director made a special presentation of a new CARM logo, selected by our Board of Directors to refl ect a strong, clean image as we move into the future (see President’s Message on page 1). We enjoyed a comedy performance by Tim Nutt, a comedian originally from Vancouver who brings his unique style to radio and television across Canada and the United States and is a regular at the “Just for Laughs” comedy festival in Montreal. Look Music and the Royal Oak Inn bartenders entertained the crowd until the wee hours of the morning. Thank you to Powell Construction for surprising everyone with a second round of table wine, served “ninja style” during the comedian’s performance.

The Board and Staff of CARM extend our thanks to all who made this event a great success and look forward to giving you all the best from our Association for many years to come. Without your continued support, events like this would not be possible.

Centennial Celebration a HUGE Success!

BEN WIEBE Memorial Award

The Ben Wiebe Memorial Award is presented annually to a construction industry practitioner who serves the industry and the community in an exemplary way, and who exhibits the integrity and fair-mindedness that so characterized Ben Wiebe. The 2013 Ben Wiebe Memorial Award was presented to Travis Penner of T.L. Penner Construction Inc. at the CARM 100th Annual Banquet in October.

Travis Penner has been the General Contractor on hundreds of projects. On every one of them he has worked hard to show value for both the client and for his ownership group. He has proven many times the thing he values most are the people involved. Travis views his reputation as an investment that can only be built over time and through building lasting relationships. It is this focus, where people come fi rst, that has made him known as a leader who works fi rst and foremost to deal “through the front door”. Being a true team player, Travis has always said four horses pulling in the same direction is better than one. Under his leadership the company works continually to fi nd ways to build their team through working together, playing together and learning together.

Travis has been a true inspiration by continually showing that people and relationships matter more than any number on the bottom line. This has been the hallmark of his company, his career and his personal life. Wheth-er it is one of the many commercial or residential projects he and his team have built or whether it is in his generosity towards community and charitable organizations, this man’s motivation is to show that he believes in the value of people ahead of the value of the project. While putting people fi rst he knows that the best way to face the chal-lenges and realities of the contracting world is head on. When challenges are faced head on, within a team approach where people are the most important investment an environment for success is created. Travis’s repu-tation has earned him the respect of his peers, and more importantly the respect of his family and his community.

Congratulations Travis on receiving the 2013 Ben Wiebe Memorial Award!
