About Carl Fabergé Carl's father, Gustav trained as a gold-

smith St. Petersburg. In 1842 he founded a jewellery company under his own name. His son, Carl Fabergé was born in 1846 and studied at the house

of Friedman, a goldsmith in Frankfurt. Aged 26 he returned to St. Petersburg

and took over his father's business. Carl transformed the small atelier

into the largest jewellery company in the entire Russian Empire and

one of the largest in the world.

Fabergé had branches in Moscow, Odessa, Kiev and London. In 1885 the

Tsar discovered Fabergé's products and on 1 May 1885 he made Fabergé a

court supplier and placed the first or-der for Easter eggs. In 1894 the com-

pany received an order from Nicholas II to manufacture a stunning pearl and

gold necklace (valued at 166,500,000 roubles or around £3.6 million) for the

then Princess Alice von Hessen-Darmstadt who became Tsarina

Alexandra Feodorovna. His company was awarded numerous international

prizes and awards. Almost all the royal families in Europe and even the King of

Siam were Fabergé's customers.

After the 1917 Russian revolution, Fabergé was forced to close his company in 1918 and he died in Switzerland on 24 September 1920.

Carl Fabergé’s strengths were in quality of design and craftsmanship. His finest achievement was in developing new enamelling techniques controlling the finish enabling intricate detail and a flawless result.

The Alfa jewellery workshop was founded on 16 December 1992 in St. Petersberg by Nikolai Schajdullin. They started to manufacture the original designs by Carl Fabergé from drawings found in Russian archives only released after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Today Alfa's master jewellers are considered to be some of foremost in Russia. They are continuing the traditions of Russia and St. Petersburg and creating jewellery and decorative ob-jects which are already considered to be works of art.

Tatiana Fabergé rewarded Nikolai Shaidullin, the Director General of Alfa, the Medal of Honor of the Carl Fabergé Memorial Fund for his outstanding contri-butions in maintaining and developing the traditions of Carl Fabergé
