The Staff and Board of Directors at the Foley Area C.A.R.E. Program have been working diligently on strategic positioning in order to serve the needs of seniors in our community. As of January 2014, the goal of our team has been to meet with local organizations to bring additional service needs to seniors who reside in Benton County. We are proud to list our accomplishments:

We are happy to announce that our program is now providing transportation services to residents

in Sauk Rapids and Rice locations.

Benton County provides office space/garage space to continue program’s mission.

We are working with the VA Hospital social workers in St. Cloud to provide veterans rides to

medical appointments.

Our partnership with Catholic Charities supplies health educational support such as Chronic Pain

Management classes in Benton County.

C.A.R.E. works with the Minnesota Extension office to provide grocery store shopping tours in

order to provide seniors the opportunity of health food choices.

The American Cancer Society refers patients with transportation needs to our program for

treatment.

We work with Second Harvest Heartland to provide fresh produce for residents of all ages who

reside in Benton County. We also provide low income seniors with basic food needs on a

monthly basis.

We are currently working with Tri-CAP to have the ability to apply for such programs as energy

assistance, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and possible free tax services for

residents making $50,000 or less annually. We are partnering to investigate if these services

can be set up locally in our community.

The staff and Board of Directors at Foley Area C.A.R.E. are committed to continue to look for new ways to

assist our aging population. Creating dynamic partnerships to serving seniors and their families has and will

always play a vital role in our program. Fall is our annual appeal to the community for funding. We hope you

will find it in your hearts to respond to the needs of seniors with a monetary donation to continue the

accomplishments of the Foley Area C.A.R.E. Program.

Weekly Chair Exercise Class Offered for Foley Community

Featured Volunteer ShopKo Contributes to C.A.R.E. Mary Chmielewski has been a volunteer with C.A.R.E. since

the early stages of our program. She has served as a board

member, has written grants, is an active driver for our program

and bakes pies for various events. Mary has said the best part

about volunteering for C.A.R.E. is “when I give C.A.R.E.

clients rides I meet so many wonderful people”. Thank you

Mary for all that you do for your community.

Connie Cardinal, Executive

Director of C.A.R.E. recently

accepted a grant from Craig

Dewight of Shopko St. Cloud in

the amount of $500.00. Thank

you Shopko for making these

funds available to assist seniors

in your area. We enjoy working

with you and look forward to

continuing this collaboration into

the future.

Chair exercise classes are held

each Tuesday and Thursday at

Dewey Place Apartments for

community members from 1:30

to approximately 2:20. Stop in

and check out this great form of

exercising for both your mind and

body. Class is offered free of

charge.

Pie Social and Health Fair 2015 Foley Area C.A.R.E. had its annual pie and ice cream social/health fair on Monday, Aug 17

th at the

Church of St. John in Foley. We also had a raffle for two beautiful quilts made by Lou Demarais and

St. Anne’s Mission Group. Over 50 volunteers made delicious pies which were served at the church

and many were purchased to be enjoyed later at home. The health fair consisted of 20 vendors who

set up tables to display items associated with their business and answered any questions that

attendees had. Also at the health fair was an opportunity given by Benton County Public Health to

have dates of immunizations checked to see what immunizations might be needed. We would like to

thank all of the vendors that took time out of their schedules to assist community members with

health concerns and questions. We would also like to thank the Catholic Church of St. John for the

use of their building, Benton County American Dairy Association for the donation of ice cream, Super

America of Foley for the donation of cups, our many volunteers that made pies, waited on tables,

worked as set up and cleanup crews, and to the community for attending our fundraising event.

Through working together we continue to make our community a vibrant place to call home.

Annual C.A.R.E. Volunteer Appreciation The annual C.A.R.E. Volunteer Appreciation dinner and

entertainment held on Monday, Sept 14th was a wonderful

celebration to thank our many volunteers. The C.A.R.E. board is

very appreciative of the hours that volunteers donate to our

community. The volunteers enjoyed bluegrass/gospel music

performed by the Knudtson family from the Zimmerman area playing

fiddle, guitar, mandolin,

banjo and upright bass.

This family sang

beautifully together to

inspire our volunteers.

THANK YOU

volunteers for all that

you do.

Even though our volunteers donate their time generously, we still have fixed costs

to continue our program like personnel, office rent and supplies, utilities, and

Insurance.

This sheet will help you determine a sug-gested amount to contribute for services

you receive if you are able and willing to do so. Thank you!

Medication Disposal For a Laugh…

A man buys a parrot and brings him home. The parrot starts insulting him and gets nasty. The man picks up the parrot and tosses him into the freezer to teach him a lesson. He hears the bird squawking for a few minutes, but all of a sudden the parrot is quiet. The man opens the freezer door, the parrot walks out, looks up at him and says, "I apologize for offending you, and I humbly ask your forgiveness." The man says, "Well, thank you. I forgive you." The parrot then says, "If you don't mind my asking, what did the chicken do?"

PREPARING FOR FLU SEASON Flu symptoms: If you experience sudden onset of fever, aches, chills, or extreme tiredness, you may have the flu. Primary symptoms include:

Fever Your temperature is considered elevated at 100°F or greater.

Aches Sudden or unexplained body aches can be a sign of the flu.

Chills Body chills can be a sign of the flu.

Tiredness Tiredness is a feeling of exhaustion or lack of energy. When as-sociated with one or more of the other symptoms, this can be a sign of the flu.

Other symptoms :

A headache associated with the flu may appear suddenly and be accompanied by body aches or nasal congestion.

Swelling in the throat can make it sore.

A runny or stuffy nose may occur, but is more common in chil-dren than adults.

Stomach symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. They are more common in children than adults.

Chest discomfort and cough is often severe with the flu.

The flu is a contagious virus. Flu season is from late November through March. It can last a few days to a week.

A flu shot is your best protection against the flu. But it is still pos-sible to get the flu as not all strains may be affected.

Over-the-counter medicines may help relieve flu symptoms but don’t shorten the time you’re sick.

What to do with the Flu? Try to avoid close contact with sick people If you are sick with flu-like symptoms, stay home for at least 24

hours after your fever is gone with medications While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to pre-

vent infecting them. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or

sneeze and then throw the tissue in the trash. Wash your hands with soap and water. If soap and water are

not available, use alcohol based hand rub. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth as germs spread

this way. Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contami-

nated with germs like the flu. Antiviral drugs can treat the flu. They work best in the first 2 days

of symptoms.
