WP 2 – Progress with CH-DTL WP 2 – Progress with CH-DTL for the GSI linacfor the GSI linac
Some convergence (or cross-fertilization): coupling cells have been added to the CH-DTL structure, as in CCDTL and SCL.
New (top) and old design (bottom) of the intertank connection of the CH-DTL developed at IAP-Frankfurt for the FAIR project at GSI
The CH-DTL model built at IAP-Frankfurt.
Decision by GSI to move from 352 MHz to 324 MHz:easier CH-DTL and compatible with UNILAC upgrade(324=3*108), but no more standardisation offrequencies at the European level.

WP2 – Prototyping at CERN for WP2 – Prototyping at CERN for Linac4Linac4
Concern: delays (1 yr CCDTL1, 6 months CCDTL2) and bad quality of work due to priority given to LHC (CERN mechanical workshops, CERN vacuum team, even Novossibirsk workshops!)

WP 5 – Beam dynamicsWP 5 – Beam dynamics
Preparation of appropriate tools for the analysis of high-intensity linear accelerators: beam dynamics codes and detectors.
Benchmarking of 7 codes (some old, some new, some updated) finished, results are comparable, benchmarking in progress with measurements at GSI UNILAC: first measurement campaign successfully completed in (March and October 06).
Progress in the understanding of beam neutralization phenomena.

WP 5 – Simulations for CERN and WP 5 – Simulations for CERN and GSI Linac designsGSI Linac designs
Beam dynamics work focused on the requirements of 2 well defined linac projects: CERN Linac4 (tracking+error studies) and GSI FAIR linac (space charge routine for LORASR).

ESAC AssessmentESAC AssessmentAll 3 ESAC members present at HIPPI06 (J. Stovall, A. Pisent, Y.
Yamazaki), ESAC report received (although only yesterday…). 13 page document, quite complete analysis of all HIPPI activities, will
be annexed to the HIPPI Annual Report.
In general the committee found all of the presentations to be of professional quality. In some cases the work represents important contributions to the art as described below. In some cases the presentations demonstrate the professional development of young scientists under the excellent tutelage of senior scientists. All of the presentations presented represent work at the “international standard.”
With the focus on specific upgrade designs, and while no less important, it will be more challenging for the work-package managers to maintain the close collaborations among the HIPPI institutions that we have seen in the first 3 years. The committee is pleased to observe no reluctance among the participants to collaborate with their colleagues and in some cases to note strong inter-lab collaborations.
Concerns of the ESAC: delays in chopper beam tests – delays in DTL tank prototype -
