Well, here we are in September, already! I pray that you all had a wonderful and relaxing summer.
That said, I hope you’re ready for fall! We have things popping up on our calendar already!
We’ll have our Harvest Fest Pot Luck at noon on the 11th -- make sure you invite friends and neigh-
bors! Bring a dish made from veggies from our own community garden.
Our new middle school aged youth group starts that same day! We’ll be meeting at 4:00 pm on the
11th at Basalt community UMC; then we’ll alternate church locations each week. Kids in 6 th-8th grade will be
talking about Middle School issues, playing games (with a point, of course!), and talking a lot about God,
life, and why it matters.
Sunday School for pre-K through 5th grade will begin again in Carbondale on Sept 11th too! Kids 6th
grade and up are encouraged to stay upstairs and be part of worship.
Last, but not least, this September, our new Bishop, Karen Oliveto, will be installed as the bishop of
the Mountain Sky area (that’s us!). “What’s the big deal,” you ask? It’s not the fact that Bishop Karen is a
woman, although there are only 14 female bishops in the UMC. What makes this election historical is that
Karen is the first openly gay, married, lesbian ever elected to the episcopacy. She’s the Gene Robinson of
the UMC. As you are probably aware, I think this is a huge step in the right direction towards making our
Methodist slogan of “Open Hearts, Open Doors, Open Minds” actually come true.
Of course, not everyone is happy about it. Within minutes after the election, someone from the South-
Central Jurisdiction filed some kind of legal complaint with the Judiciary committee, who decided to meet in
April to determine whether there is a case or not. This is an issue in our church that could lead to schism as
there are some very passionate opinions on both sides, and the Book of Discipline contains language regard-
ing the LGBT community which at it’s best is contradictory, and at worst, discriminatory and exclusionary.
If you’d like to be a part of the biggest thing that’s happened in Methodism since the 1968 merger,
the installation service for Bishop Karen will be held at the Methodist church in Aurora, CO, on Saturday,
September 24, at 3:00 pm. If you’re interested in attending, let me know.
Joyfully,
Pastor Brad

UMCOR Responds to Louisiana Floods
Days of torrential rain inundated the state of Louisiana, beginning August 11. Flooding has impact-
ed at least 40,000 homes, and about 30,000 people and 1,000 pets have been rescued from high water
in homes and cars. At least 11 people are known to have died in the disaster.
UMCOR is collaborating with FEMA and other national disaster response organizations, including
the American Red Cross, Lutheran Disaster Response, Southern Baptist Disaster Relief, and the um-
brella group, National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters (NVOAD).
“The Red Cross national office reached out to us, and we have connected them with the Louisiana
Annual Conference leadership, as well as with UMCOR Sager Brown for warehouse space, cleanup
buckets, distribution assistance, and shelter for evacuees,” Forrester stated.
The best ways to help
Forrester urged all people of goodwill who want to help in Louisiana and Mississippi, “Do not self-
deploy. You mean to help, but at this stage your presence could unintentionally become an obsta-
cle,” he said. He also urged people not to send unsolicited aid, such as clothing.
“The best ways to help are to assemble and send cleanup buckets and to support the UMCOR U.S.
Disaster Response Advance, #901670, with your donations,” he stated. “This will allow us to assist
the most vulnerable communities in need because of this and other disasters.”
If you would like to help, your gift to UMCOR U.S. Disaster Response, Advance #901670 will help
UMCOR respond to this and other disasters across the United States. Bring your check to church
with the words “LA Floods” in the ‘memo’ line, or donate directly

Church Ladies with Typewriters
They're back! Those wonderful Church Bulletins!
Thank God for the church ladies with typewriters.
These sentences actually appeared in church
bulletins or were announced at church services:
Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were
married on October 24 in the church.
So ends a friendship that began in their school
days.
-----------------
At the evening service tonight,
the sermon topic will be 'What Is Hell?'
Come early and listen to our choir practice.
-----------------
Eight new choir robes are currently needed
due to the addition of several new members
and to the deterioration of some older ones.

The Fruit of the Holy Spirit
In June, we learned about salvation and the Holy Spirit. Paul’s letter to the Romans assures us
that “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because
through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and
death.” Romans 8 NIV
For July, I shared about confirmation and the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised “And surely I am with
you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:19-20 NIV
Let’s take a look this time about the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Paul is quite the prolific letter writer.
We find him summing up the attributes of a Christian life in his epistle to the Galatians; “(But) the
fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness
and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23 NIV
Each of these “fruits” is a characteristic of the Holy Spirit’s active presence in our daily activities:
Love is a deliberate attitude of good will and devotion to others.
Joy denotes a supernatural gladness given by God’s Spirit that actually seems to show up
best during hard times.
Peace. It’s not the absence of turmoil, but the presence of tranquility even while in a place of
chaos.
Patience is the ability to endure ill treatment from life or at the hands of others without lashing
out or paying back.
When Kindness is at work in a person’s life, he or she looks for ways to adapt to meet the
needs of others.
Goodness in you desires to see goodness in others and is not beyond confronting or even
rebuking (as Jesus did with the money changers in the temple) for that to happen.
Faithfulness. Our natural self always wants to be in charge, but Spirit-controlled faithfulness
is evident in the life of a person who seeks good for others and glory for God.
Gentleness is not without power, it just chooses to defer to others. It forgives others, corrects
with kindness, and lives in tranquility.
Self-control is literally releasing our grip on the fleshly desires, choosing instead to be con-
trolled by the Holy Spirit. It is power focused in the right place.
May the Holy Spirit fill you with these fruits in your daily lives, given to us as a gift without meas-
ure.
“For through the Spirit we eagerly
await by faith the righteousness for
which we hope.” Galatians 5:5 NIV
