Carbondalealwaysimpressesmewiththeabundanceofcreativeenergythatflowsfrom its citizens. There is continuous live music, accessible public art offerings and numerous performance art events that truly are “special.” The opportunity to participate in this plethora of art comes in many forms, but my favorite happens to be the practiced pursuit of physical art. What, you might ask is “Physical art?” Well, all successful artists, whether their medium is paint, clay, iron, glass, a musical instrument or a camera lens, know that a masterpiece is not attained without considerable effort and rarely comes to fruition without serious sweat equity. Inthesameway, ourtriumphantphysicalpursuitsarenotattainedthroughaflipofacoin into a wishing well. We do not learn to climb, ice skate, shoot and score in basketball, broomball or pickleball without the same time spent as the accomplished artist with brush in hand toiling at the easel. The only difference with our physical art is that the canvas is oneself. I believethereispureartistryina3rdgraderdrivingthelaneforatextbooklayup,anewhockeyplayer lifting the puck just over the goalies stick and into the back of the net with an almost imperceptableflickoftheirwrist,orthegraceandflowofaclimbermakingtheoverhanglookeffortlessandnaturalasifgravityisnon-existent. In the following pages you have a palette of opportunities to paint your own master-piece. Whether it is your daily spin, lift, row, push or pull in our cardio room, or the collective energyofagroupexerciseclasstopumpyouupormellowyouout, weareheretohelpyouinyour quest to produce a little “physical” art, each and every day. Make yourself the promise for the new year to work on your self portrait because it can be whatever you want it to be. Eric Brendlinger, Recreation Manager

Dear Carbondale Citizens, As the Parks & Recreation Department begins a new year in 2016, both myself and the Parks & Recreation Commission are looking at ways to support the long-term vision of our parks, recreation and trails system outlined within the recently adopted 10-year Master Plan. The primary goal of the P & R Commission in 2016 will be to create ways to assist funding of operations, maintenance and replacement needs for parks, playgrounds, the swimming pool, athleticfieldsandtrailpathconnections.TheCommissionwillbeseekingdonationsfromindividuals, encouraging community fund raising for projects, implementing a town park/trail adoption program, creating a “Commemorative Gifts Catalog,” and emphasizing a buy local campaign.
