¤  At the end of the 80’s, the tourism sector started to grow fast both on the demand and the supply side

¤  In the beginning on the 90’s, Hungary has become an important tourist receiving and also sending country

¤  In 2008: •  39 554 million persons visited

Hungary •  17 428 million Hungarians travelled

abroad

¤  The crisis has a crucial effect on the market, 63% of the Hungar ian population are influenced in its holidays by the decrease of their revenue

7!

¤  To preserve their competitiveness, suppliers will have to diminish their costs

¤  The Recreat ion voucher i s becoming more and more paying tool for the tourism, but also for the other services

è The system gives the possibility, to thousands of people belonging to target project Calypso, to participate in domestic tourism

¤  Inside Hungary the role of airlines is not important, bus companies and the State railway company cannot deserve well tourist destinations in general, thus the role of private transport (cars) is preponderant.

¤  There is a lot to do to fulfil the specific need – as for instance the needs of Calypso target groups

¤  There are deficiencies concerning the information of the target groups like the disabled people

¤  Accessibility exists in some accommodation facilities, but this does not mean than 2-3 rooms per hotel

¤  Only few suppliers are prepared to receive large families

Page 10: Caplypso study on social tourism hungary

9!

¤  The role of rural tourism is getting more and more important in Hungary, services are becoming diversified and the specific programs offered take into account local specificities and seasons

¤  The most important investments took place in health tourism in the past years in Hungary

¤  Not only important financial assets are needed for the development of products in the tourism industry, but a change of approach is also required

¤  Marketing activities and staff formation are almost completely absent in

the case of low category accommodations, or are not adequate

Page 11: Caplypso study on social tourism hungary

10!

¤  With the development of tourism, the environment will suffer increasing negative effects

è Growing circulation, hazardous waste and noise pollution might lead to irreversible environment damage

¤  Several initiatives have been made for the preservation of the environment è Official measures taken by authorities

¤  Several Eco touristic visitor centres opened for tourists and the supply of ecotourism is growing steadily

è Directorates of national parks, nature park associations and civil organizations represent the main basis of ecotourism suppliers in organizing ecotourism

Page 12: Caplypso study on social tourism hungary

¤  The average revenues of the target groups are well below the European revenues

è A great obstacle to further progress

¤  Actual needs, with the crisis, opportunities and deficiencies have to be assessed to foster social tourism

¤  Several advocacy organizations and NGO’are prepared to work for social

tourism

¤  Most of the organizations and mechanisms concerning social tourism were created for seniors and disabled persons.

è “File Years with Life” has operated since 1989 and has 1 200 member clubs.
