I read this story this week that reminded me once again that we are indeed “one body with many parts.” (1 Cor. 12):

A fourteenth-century Italian stained-glass artist was summoned to design and create a huge portrait for the window of a cathedral in Char-tres France, a place well known for its stained-glass work. He laid all of the pieces he was going to use out on the floor of the cathedral. They were beautiful to behold; most of them were large and colorful. Some of the colors from that time cannot even be reproduced today. Among these awesome pieces of glass was a small, clear piece about as big as your fingernail. As the stained-glass portrait was assembled, that little piece remained on the floor. Only the big colorful pieces of glass were used.

On the day of the window’s completion, the tiny piece of clear glass was still lying on the ground. The entire city gathered to witness the unveil-ing of the brilliant and beautiful stained-glass portrait. The artist stood in front of the crowd, made his speech, and dramatically pulled down the cloth cover. The crowd gasped at the beauty of the colorful window glowing in the sunlight. After a few seconds, however, the crowd grew silent. They sensed that something was missing, that the portrait was unfinished. The great artist then walked over to where the little clear piece of glass lay, picked it up, and placed it in the portrait, right in the center of Jesus’ eye. As the sun hit that little piece, it gave off a dazzling sparkle.

The magnificent stained glass window still draws visitors. The first thing they see is that sparkle in Jesus’ eye. Do you ever feel like that little piece of clear glass? You doubt you can ever do anything for God. Let the story of that last little piece remind you that God thinks of you as the apple of his eye.

The Bible is very clear that a church body is made up of many individuals who are gifted in many different ways. It’s what makes a church body unique. And when everyone is very consciously utilizing his or her gifts for the glory of God the body is healthy and functions as He intends. I encourage you to make sure you are more than a church “attender.” Be sure you plug in and find your spe-cific place of service. You will find great joy in that! Are you musically gifted? If so, there is a place for you in the Sunday Worship Choir, the Senior Choir, Student Ensemble, Children’s Choir (both as participant or helper), and instru-mental groups. All you have to do is come to a rehearsal. We’ll fill you in on everything you need to know!

Blessings, Doug

VBS 2016June 6-10

Technology is awesome, but it has be-come a consuming power in our lives. I noticed a family of four at a restau-rant a few weeks ago. As soon as they sat down, all four pulled out their cell phones and spoke very little to each other. Not only has the advancement of personal devices consumed us, it also has the potential to be a source of temptation. You do realize that you are literally carrying a computer around in your pocket (if you have a smartphone), right?! One aspect of

technology that is especially powerful is social media. Social networking sites like Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook give us the ability to commu-nicate with “friends” in an instant. They can be problematic, though, as they really can consume us. In an effort to encourage students (and adults!) to unplug from their phones, Rock is having a Social Media Fast! We will be encouraging the students to open their Bible app and read Scripture anytime they have the urge to check social media! It will be a week-long fast, lasting from Sunday, March 20 (at 12:01am) until Saturday, March 26 (at 11:59pm). You can get involved too! Join with your student(s) in participating. Help hold them accountable by encouraging them to persevere. At the end of the week, hopefully we will have had refreshing experience as we have consumed ourselves with God’s Word instead of social media.
