PASTOR’S PAGE

The Shepherd’s Notebook New Birth, New Life at Calvary

Just a bit over nine months ago, as I write this day, what’s going to take place in a few weeks was just a glimmer in your eyes. Over the first weekend in June, Calvary will meet the one(s) we’ve been praying for, the pastor and family who, after much searching, prayer and discernment, the Pastoral Search Team is recommending for call to Calvary.

Members of the congregation have already received the letter announcing the visit. As your interim senior pastor, it would be improper for me to go into who this candidate is or to attempt to influence your decision in any way. So, just let me say that I am very excited for both Calvary and the candidate. The Lord has heard Calvary’s prayers and the Pastoral Search Team has dis-cerned well. Thanks be to God, something new is being born here at Calvary, and it is amazing to behold.

From my point of view, the nine-plus months we’ve been to-gether has seemed a lot like, well, a pregnancy and an adoption process, and I’ve found my role to be much like that of the spiri-tual midwife. There was, I recall, some queasiness during the first few months (morning sickness?) And, no wonder! The months leading up to the interim brought more than their share of up-heaval, grieving and loss. But, by about the fourth month, new life was starting to flex its muscles and kick its heels. We began speaking of the new Calvary. New life was beginning to show. New life, in all aspects of mission and ministry. New life to be tended, nurtured and celebrated. And it was amazing to behold.

Then, as happens in any pregnancy, we were ready for it to be over. We just couldn’t wait for the identification and arrival of that pastor whom the Lord has been preparing to be Calvary’s new shepherd. When some have been impatient, others have en-couraged the anxious ones to remember how much longer previ-ous call processes have taken.

All the while, the Holy Spirit has been preparing both the Calvary family and the prospective pastor and family for the moment of deci-sion, the time when Calvary and the pastoral candidate will decide whether this match is, indeed, the call of God.

The time is getting close and coming quickly. Now is the time to be deeply in prayer: For the Holy Spirit’s wisdom, for grace and confidence in birthing the New Calvary. Your midwife-pastor is proud of you, standing by and confident in your readiness to move as God leads. What our Lord is dong through Calvary is amazing to behold. I can’t wait to see what comes next!

In Christ and Service,

Pastor Cathi

PS: I cannot thank you enough, Calvary friends, for all you did to help me celebrate my graduation and receipt of the Doctor of Ministry degree from the Graduate Theological Foundation earlier in May! With the cake and reception after worship on May 6th , the flowers and the cards that continue to arrive day after day, and your many personal well-wishes, you’ve helped me make some wonderful memories!

Prayers Please check the weekly announcement bulletin for those people needing our urgent prayers. If you have any prayer requests, please call or email the church office. Please also continue to pray for the following Calvary family and friends: Shut-Ins: Betty Schraith, Elaine Shaw, Paul & Marj Skarie, Lorene & Greg Fleckenstein, Shirley Derse, Lorraine Zembinski, Mickey Rash, Bill Rash Jr. (son of Mickey Rash). Ongoing prayer concerns: Lowell Sonderman; Shirley Derse; Greg & Lorene Fleckenstein; Donna Trethewey; Donna Muel-ler; Don Heinz; John Rupnick; Patty Gross (daughter of Beverly Meinke); Dyana Solheim (former member of Calvary & friend of Donna Mueller); Ted Grossman (father of Alicia Huettl); Chris Clemens (father of Jessie Brovold); Carol Manning (cousin of Pat Treutelaar); Mike Daniels (nephew of Don Anderson); Karen Reiter (niece of Hugh & Jane Taufner); Chuck Herbst (great-nephew of Judy DeBruine), Ingrid Bensler (aunt of Sandy Notzke); Ruth Zarse (friend of Jeanette Ketelsen); Connor Semenske (infant son of friends of Marion & Don Heinz); Carol Kaebisch (friend of Donna Schroeder & Bette Forbes); Steve Mijokovic (former Calvary member).

Pastoral Search Team Update by Grace Gunnlaugsson, PST chairperson

Sunday June 3 will be a special day at Calvary as we welcome the pastoral candidate your pastoral search team believes is the one we at Calvary have been asking the Holy Spirit to show us. The candidate and his family will be worshiping with us, and the candidate will be leading worship and preaching the sermon. After worship, there will be a reception followed by a question and answer period with him in Fellowship Hall. We praise God for bringing us to this point, but we are also aware that the most important step in this search process is yet to come. That step is the vote at a special congregational meeting to extend a letter of call to this candidate.

Trusting that the Holy Spirit is at work in us and in this candi-date, we anticipate this special meeting will be held on Monday, June 18. All voting members of Calvary will receive a mailing early in June with details of the meeting. It will also be an-nounced at worship services on June 10 and 17. The search team is very excited about these final steps and very grateful for all the prayers the entire congregation has lifted up in the past year. Please continue to hold the process, the candidate and his family and congregation, the search team, and our entire family at Calvary in your prayers in the weeks to come. Mark your calendar for June 3! Come, rejoice, welcome the can-didate and his family, and praise God from whom all blessings surely flow!

Mission & Outreach MISSION & OUTREACH

June Mission of the Month Mission Servant Week

Each year Calvary sets aside one week for members to go out into the community together and do hands-on mission work. This year’s annual Mission Servant Week is scheduled for Saturday, June 16 through Saturday, June 23. Join other Calvary workers as we reach out into the community by helping with many meaningful pro-jects and tasks. See page 10 for a list of projects already scheduled.

Your financial contributions to Calvary’s Mission of the Month during June fund the various projects. Any leftover funds are dispersed to the groups we have worked with during the week. Use your weekly offering envelopes or a white pew envelope to contribute and note “Mission of the Month” on your check and/or en-velope.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to Calvary’s Cupboard last month. Items collected are taken to the Waukesha Food Pantry. The next Food Sunday is Cereal Sunday, with collection June 16th and 17th, 2012. Recommended items include boxed cereals and bars, oatmeal, and Pop Tarts. Other items of need are canned fruits or vegetables, soups, peanut butter and jelly, and personal care products. If you prefer to make a monetary contribution, please mark your envelope or check with the notation “Food Pantry”.

Thank you Calvary... From Charlie Krueger at New Life Lutheran Church: Thank you for your generous gift of $5,013.50. Our congrega-tion was absolutely delighted to receive this news. These funds will most certainly help support our Christian vitality as we con-tinue to grow and face new challenges. I also want to thank you for allowing me to visit your church and for your warm greetings and hospitality. We feel blessed as a congregation and our mem-bers often remark that God has called us to establish and grow New Life Lutheran Church. Your decision to support our mis-sion church further validates this belief. From Luther Manor: We are pleased to inform you that the following members of your congregation are volunteers at Lu-ther Manor—Randy & Sue Wizner, and Sue Meyer. [Thank you also to past liaison, Ruby Hauch, and current liaison, Nancy Marsho!] From Mary Anna Salo (to the choirs): I wanted to thank you all for a wonderful six months of music ministry with you. It was a privilege and blessing to be able to serve with you and to con-

tribute to the music ministry at Calvary. Having the opportunity to play so much beautiful sacred music has been thrilling. Thank you so much for the delicious cake! The flowers on the cake were pink, my favorite color, and the cake itself was chocolate, my favorite kind of cake!! :) And, thank you for the lovely flow-ers. It is always a treat to have a bouquet in my bedroom for me to enjoy. Thank you for your kindness and graciousness to me while I was at Calvary. I enjoyed my time there and look forward to dropping by occasionally to say hello and perhaps play as well. :) May you all have blessed summers! ~Mary Anna Salo From Colleen Ellison Rogers: Just a little note to thank you for all your love and support you all have given our family and espe-cially dad through mom’s passing. We all felt everyone’s arms around us as we journey through this part of life. Mom is at peace in a beautiful place and we are grateful for that.

SEE WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING

Music Celebration On Sunday, May 13th (Mother’s Day), the Celebration Ring-ers and Alleluia Choir ended their choir season. This year was filled with mixed emotions as we began the choir season without a choir director, watched as various members with musical gifts stepped forward to keep the special worship music going, and then marched ahead with excitement as JoAnne Krause stepped forward to lead the choirs and Mary Anna Salo took charge of the piano!

The final Sunday was again filled with mixed emotions as we said farewell to Mary Anna, who will be moving to other op-

portunities and studies as a concert pianist and teacher. The choirs presented both Mary Anna and JoAnne with flowers and a cake in celebration of and thankfulness for their gifts.

In the tradition began by Pastor Cathi, the children laid their hands on Mary Anna and blessed her (pictured at left).

We look forward with joy and anticipation as the personnel team continues it’s search for the music leaders that God has already chosen for Calvary!

Sunday School Musical 2012

On Sunday, May 20th, the Calvary Sunday School children and Confirmation youth pre-sented the message through narration and music in their annual musical production. This year the kids shared snippets of their lessons from the previous year. Pictured at left, the kids—dressed in brightly colored shirts—use props and actions as they sing of God’s creation. The kids ranged in age from 2 to 14. One highlight of the Musical was the song “Jesus Loves Me”, led by Michael Anderson, Michael Grey, and Connor Mor-ris on “guitars” (pictured at left). The musical was written and directed by Sunday School coordinator, Linda Grey. Tina Baumgartner accompanied the songs on keyboard. Thanks you to all the children, youth, teachers, and parents for all your work to make the musical a success.

Sunday School Teacher Appreciation

In conjunction with the annual Sunday School Musical and the last day of Christian Education for the school year, Calvary recognized and said thank you to all our Christian Educators for the 2011-2012 school year:

Gr. 3: Jenni Rian, Reg Becker Gr. 4-5: Cindy Rooks, Marianne Citraro Youth/Confirm: Chet Elliott, Pr. Cathi Adult Ed: Larry Bonier

The children blessed the teachers following the presentation of gifts (pictured at left). Thank you, teachers, for sharing your gifts with us all! Interested in sharing your gifts? We ask that you prayerfully consider giving of your time and talent to our Christian Educa-tion ministry next fall. If you would like more information, contact Linda Grey, Angie Schatz, or the pastor.
