News from the office!
It's hard to believe our school year is quickly coming to an end!
Our Crossroads staff would like to extend a sincere thank you to our
Crossroads Community for the commitment and support during the
year. Our school has benefitted tremendously through volunteers in
our classrooms, organizing hot lunches for students, chaperoning on
field trips or driving our teams to competitions. We would like to
extend special thanks to our Home Show committee and our Outdoor
Classroom parents, who work tirelessly to support our school.
June will be a busy month with many class trips scheduled, preparing for graduation, and organizing for the
upcoming school year. Please take time to read through this month's newsletter as we have included a number of

the end of August. Thank you.
Save Our Subscriptions This coming fall our school will be providing the opportunity to renew and/or
purchase new magazine subscriptions through the QSP Family Reading
Fundraising Program. Please ignore any notices from the publishers asking
you to renew now and instead, support our school‟s fundraising efforts in the

Garden Help
Our school has many gardens, which will require some TLC during the summer
months (i.e., weeding). If you are willing to offer some time over the
summer to help keep the front of our school looking beautiful, please let us
know by calling/emailing the school office. You will be contacted about a
schedule that is being developed and ways you can help. Thank you!

Coyotes Support the Rankin Cancer Run
A great big THANK YOU to all of you who helped support our Crossroads School Rankin Cancer Run Team. There
were 215 people on our team- 'Kathryn's Coyotes' . We joined together with over 13,000 participants on Saturday,
May 28th. It was a beautiful day to be surrounded by caring friends, families and colleagues plus thousands of like-
minded people who support the same cause. This truly was a special day to honour and remember those who have
been touched by cancer and to show our love and support to Mrs. Eden-Smith as she continues her healing journey.
Thank you also goes out to those of you who
supported the Me2We Fun Week and
purchased treats and to those who bought
tickets for the Rankin Raffle. Our Me2We
group spent their lunch hours every day for
two weeks to collect money and sell items.
We are proud to announce that we raised
$2000 dollars during those events, thanks
to your support and generosity. We had
many lucky winners from the raffle; Scooter- Austin L., iTunes Gift Card-Kathleen M., Movie Passes-Staten L.,
Blanket-Kaitlyn L. There were 10 winners of soccer balls and 18 winners of chocolate bars. All prizes have been
delivered. Congratulations to the winners!
A grand total for our team is hard to determine due to personal donations and online donations that our teachers
do not see. We know that approximately $6000 was collected from our Crossroads community. This year's grand
total for the day was over $1 million dollars!! You may not be aware of this, but the Rankin Cancer Run is organized
by volunteers and no one gets paid. Every cent that we raised will go directly to cancer care in Niagara. Well done,
Coyotes.
Hair Donations Our May 17th hair donation event was a huge success. Miss Elder would like to
congratulate all Coyotes who donated their hair and thank our wonderful hairstylists for
donating their time and expertise. Along with Miss Elder, 14 students and one parent
donated hair at our event. An additional four students and one parent brought in
previously chopped braids to include with our donations. In total, we donated 40
inches to Wigs for Kids and 148 inches to Pantene Beautiful Lengths. Thank you to
all parents who showed their support at our event.

The Council decided to continue with a regular meeting night next year so that people can better plan for
attending. Mark the 3rd Tuesday of every month on your calendar, and especially Tuesday, September 20th which
will be our inaugural meeting for the 2016/2017 school year. We‟ll be electing our executive on that night, and

The sun is back – From your School Nurse
The sun is shining and it‟s time to get outside to play! But before you run outside, make sure you remember your
5 S‟s…
Slip: on some clothes that will protect your skin from the sun (loose-fitting and tightly woven are best).
Slop: on some sunscreen that is at least SPF 30 and filters UVA & UVB rays (broad-spectrum). Put
sunscreen on 20 minutes BEFORE you go outside, so it can soak in. Don‟t forget your ears, nose and feet if
you are wearing sandals! Lips should also be protected with SPF 30 lip balm.
Slap: on a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face, ears and neck
Seek: shade when outside between 11am-4pm
Slide: on some sunglasses that have 100% UVA & UVB filters.
Attention moms, dads, coaches and caregivers: sun damage can happen quickly, so make sure you remember
sunscreen for lunch break, gym class, track and field and other outdoor activities. For more information, talk to
your school nurse.

Youth Exchange Program
WOULD YOUR FAMILY HOST A YOUTH EXCHANGE STUDENT?!
Experience another culture without having to leave your home!
Each year, about 8,000 students from over 100 countries participate in exchanges through the Rotary
International Youth Exchange program. The long-term exchange is open to students ages 15-18 and
usually lasts 10-12 months. The student lives with more than one family in the host country, usually for 3
months at a time, and attends a local secondary school.
Host families are a vital part of the cultural exchange, offering the student a view of another country
from the home of a local family. In turn, you and your family have the opportunity to learn about a new
culture from a young leader of today.
Hosting is a tremendously fun experience in which you can share in a young person's hopes and dreams
and develop a lifelong connection with a student from another country. No doubt, it can be challenging
to help a young person transition to a new culture and ease into the surroundings but the rewards are
immeasurable.
Host families in the Youth Exchange program come in all shapes and sizes.
They can be Rotarians or non-Rotarians, and may include young children, older children,
or no children at all.
WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOUR FAMILY?
Hosting a student is a great way to expose your family to another culture. It's amazing
what you learn from having someone from a different country live
with you and integrate into your family.
Helping someone to learn your language and customs is rewarding, and being able to see your own town
and country through their eyes is an incredible experience! Your family will not only learn about another
way of life but will surely learn more about your own country and community.
Often you will build a friendship with the student you're hosting
that will last a lifetime... A place to visit when on holiday! Many host families remain in
contact with their host student for years and create life long relationships.
Rotary clubs are service organizations that strive to improve the
quality of life in their communities and abroad, promote high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace throughout the world.
If you would like to speak with a former host family to learn more about the program please feel free to
contact the NOTL Rotary Club's Youth Programs coordinator, Stephanie Hall at 905 262 8777 or at
