Listening to the Churches: "It's Working For Us! Todays the Day

    11:45-1:00 P.M. Fellowship Hall

    "It's Working for Us"

Sunday March 22 11:45 after church Have you ever driven down Chapman Ave. by the Episcopalian church and wondered about all the boats out front which look like large container gardens? Ever heard someone say they are helping children "Get on the Bus"? Everyone is invited to share a light lunch after church on Sunday March 22 in Fellowship Hall to hear our guest neighbors from nearby churches coming to tell us stories of what exactly is working for them in their outreach to our community. Following their stories, two inspiring leaders in organizing our community churches' outreach projects will respond about how our churches might better coordinate our many efforts to serve others. If the great needs around us seem too overwhelming and complicated at times, let's spend an hour together listening to what happens when we take one step forward at a time!

Seniors Enjoy Musical Program Twenty-four members of

our Sr. Adult Ministry enjoyed a beautiful recital presented by Alexandria Schammel, a Senior Vocal Performance Major at Whittier College, this past Tuesday during our regular monthly meeting. She was accompanied by Ed Zeliff, her Mentor, who presented our seniors with a great program of piano music a couple of years ago. We were particularly delighted to welcome Pat Vannoy and Lisa Parks to our monthly gathering for the first time. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 21 at noon in Chapman Lounge. Our speaker that day will be the Rev. Dennis Short, long-time Pastor and Leader in the PSW Region. Dennis will be sharing with us about his experiences in the historic march from Selma to Montgomery 50 years ago that was a key factor in the passage of the historic Voting Rights Act which was signed into law by then President Lyndon B. Johnson. We urge you to put this date in your calendar and plan to attend the April meeting of the Sr. Adult Ministry. 2nd Annual Senior Adults Retreat Tuesday, May 19 - Wednesday, May 20, 2015 Newly refurbished Campbell Lodge Loch Leven Camp and Conference Center $65.00/person please register by May 8 Check in begins at 1 p.m. on the 19th with first session to begin at 2 p.m. and concludes on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Keynote Speaker: Doug Edwards Doug will explore topics relating to The Third Half of Life. The Third Half is the life beyond what we planned for; the life few have lived before us, and the life that, of all people, Christians are called to live faithfully. Tuesday afternoons presentation is titled: Aging in the 3rd Millenium & Discipleship in

  • 5

Older Life. Wednesday mornings presentation is titled: Our Discipleship: Our Call.

Tuesday night entertainment will be John Towey, musician and actor. Tri-Tip Sales Begins April 9 The new BBQ has been ordered and promises to be here by the first of April just in time for our opening on Thursday, April 9. The Fullerton Downtown Market will open for the first time on April 2, but since that is Maundy Thursday and it marks the beginning of our annual 24-Hour Prayer Vigil, weve decided to delay our participation in this activity that falls on every Thursday from April through October to the second Thursday of the month. The plan is to work in three teams of our members with a fourth team being supplied by the Casa de Oracin congregation. With four teams, each team will work once a month. There are only two months there are five Thursdays and when one team will have to cover twice. Donna Woodbridge is coordinating the organization of this project. The schedule will be mailed out this week but there is still room to add your name to the list so be sure to give your name to Donna right away. We are always open to have more volunteers involved in this project that historically generates between $10,000 and $12,000 in profit all of which is directed to various outreach projects including such ministries as O.C. Habitat for Humanity, the Fullerton CROP Hunger Walk, Heifer International, the Week of Compassion and Loch Leven, to name some of the recipients of the profit from the Tri-Tip Project in years past!

Parlor Class To Launch A New Study On April 12, But In The Meantime . . . The Parlor Class, which meets every Sunday in Chapman Lounge at 9 A.M., will launch a new study on Sunday, April 12. A final decision about several optional courses which will begin on 4/12 will be made by the group this coming Sunday. In the meantime,

for the next three Sundays, we will be reading and discussing the Lectionary texts for each Sunday. This coming Sunday, March 22, the Lectionary texts are: Jeremiah 31:31-34; Psalm 51:1-12; Hebrews 5:5-10 and John 12:20-33. On March 29, which is Palm Sunday, the texts to be read and reflected upon are: Psalm 118:1-2, 19-29 and Mark 11:1-11, plus John 12:12-16. On Easter Sunday the texts well read and discuss will be: Isaiah 25:6-9; Psalm 118:1-2,14-24; 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 and Mark 16:1-8. Any and all adults in the congregation whod like to join this class are most welcome to come and check us out. We believe the entire congregation would benefit from taking the time to see and discuss the DVD course weve just finished. It is Embracing ForgivenessWhat It Is and What It Isnt. It features Barbara Cawthorne Crafton, a wonderful storyteller, and a group of seven people who respond to her teaching. Several of our regular members have said that this was the best, and most helpful study, theyve ever experienced on the importance of giving and receiving forgiveness as Christians. If youd like to be part of a study group using this resource, speak to Lin Garcia who heads our Discipleship Ministry. We expect that she and the members of this Ministry Group would be willing to help any of you organize a group to use this resource. It is a five-session course which needs at least 90 minutes to do justice to the content on the DVD. The Parlor Class, which meets for just one hour each Sunday, devoted two Sundays to each of the given sessions. But a group meeting during the week could complete the course in 5 weeks easily. If you get involved with this resource on forgiveness youll never forget Mrs. Day and Mrs. Lee and youll most likely know a couple of people like Mrs. Day and Mrs. Lee. In recent weeks we have been blessed to have Pam Lee return to our group after several months of being in Thailand visiting her mother. In case youre wondering Pam is not related to the Mrs. Lee about whom we heard on the aforementioned DVD. We were also delighted to welcome Ginny King as a new

  • 6

member of our group on Sunday mornings. How about YOU joining us for study each Sunday morning? Well be blessed to have you among us and were confident youll

be blessed too! The Parlor Class Mission Trip Update

Craig Wallace has informed us that six tickets have been purchased for the flight that will take members of our congregation to and from Loveland, Colorado for the June 7-13 Mission Trip sponsoring by Disciples Volunteering. We understand that at least two more people are considering going on this Mission TripSherry Herrera and Masumi Hogan. If this activity interests you, be sure to contact Ed Linberg, Chair of the Outreach Ministry, to get a packet of materials for registering for this opportunity to serve individuals and families whose homes and lives were devastated by flooding in their community during 2014. We are asking that all registration packets for the persons going to Loveland in June be returned to our Church Office on, or before, Sunday April 12. When the registration packets are returned a check in the amount of $75, payable to our church, needs to also be submitted to cover the registration fee for this activity. We will send in all of the registration forms and one check to cover our group well before the deadline for submitting this data which is May 15. The Outreach Ministry Easter Offering The second of the six special offerings we receive each year in support of the ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), both across our nation and around the world, is the Easter Offering. It will be received on Sunday, March 29, Palm Sunday and Sunday April 5, Easter Sunday. The Outreach Ministry has set the goal for the 2015 Easter Offering at $1,350.00. The Easter Offering supports the ministries of the various units of our Church

including the General Office of our church, Global Ministries, Homeland Ministries, the National Benevolent Association, Council on Christian Unity, the Pension Fund and the Disciples Historical Society. If you are interested in the ministry of Sharon Watkins, our General Minister and President, then the Easter Offering deserves your support. If you are interested in what the church is doing in Haiti, the Congo, Mexico, Japan and India, to name just a few places we have ministries, then the Easter Offering deserves your support. If you are interested in what your church is doing in youth ministry, in reaching out to young adults and families, plus the work of both women and men, as well in serving the poor and disadvantaged through community centers such as All Peoples in Los Angeles, then the Easter Offering deserves your support. If you are interested in what your church is doing in serving disabled adults of all ages through Woodhaven in Missouri then the Easter Offering deserves your support. If you are interested in what your church is doing to foster ecumenical relationships here and abroad, then the Easter Offering deserves your support. If you are interested in what your church is doing to ensure that all retired ministers and missionaries have adequate financial support through the Pension Fund, then the Easter Offering deserves your support. If you are interested in the preservation of the history of the Disciples of Christ through the Historical Society, then the Easter Offering deserves your support. All of these ministries depend upon the gifts of Disciples congregations through the Disciples Mission Fund month in and month out, as well as through the annual Easter Offering. A special envelope for your use in making a gift for the Easter Offering will be available this Sunday along with a flyer giving you additional information about the ministries supported by the Easter Offering. Your generous gift, in any amount, to the 2015 Easter Offering will be greatly appreciated. The Outreach Ministry

FCCF Wins" at Food Loving Guys and Gals benefit for Pathways of Hope Our congregation, represented by a team from our Monday evening OT class and Saturday morning Greek 300 words class, won first place for best thematic presentation (People's Choice) and second place for entres - .10 of difference between 1st and 2nd (judged by local restaurant chefs and Peoples Choice) last Sunday afternoon at the Food Loving Guys and Gals benefit cook-off for Pathways of Hope at the Fullerton Community Center on Commonwealth. Nearly 30 other chefs vied for these honors and for a newly created perpetual trophy designed by our own Lin Garcia. Barry Woodbridge prepared 200 sample portions of the "Champagne Chicken" recipe developed over months of revised efforts tasted and adapted at our Monday evening class' weekly shared dinner. But the table "presentation" that won the day was won by the team of Ada Rodman and Barbara Hasty, who offered serving trays to the passers-by of Martinelli's in champagne glasses and tastings of champagne chicken, while dressed in evening attire and standing in front of the Hollywood walk of fame stars on the floor in front of our festive decorated table and red carpet walkway, so ably designed and presented by Lisa Parks, Randy Langston, Donna Woodbridge, and Lin Garcia. Chef's Note: When all was said and done, we had only taken chunks of chicken breast on a bed of white rice, covered it with Campbell's chicken and mushroom soup, and then tried to make it less ordinary by pouring champagne over it while it baked and serving it with freshly cut thyme to cover over such a simple dinner casserole! It might appear perhaps a bit odd to be serving festive food dressed to the nine's in order to offer more care for the hungry and homeless among us! WWJD? But then again: we worked very hard as a team of committed Christians to accomplish this, and perhaps it's what happened within us on that day that molded us more deeply into servants for the Lord who was known to offer a Great Banquet at his own table to better share his love for all others!

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth [Rev. 21:1] The world in which we live emphasizes visual communication. We expect to see our news on the television or on a computer monitor. Most of the books of the Bible were written down long after they had been received

from generation to generation via aural means. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is constantly say, You have heard it said He uses this phrase because that had been the only way most people ever experienced the Word of Godthey heard it. They did not read it. If you went to school when I did, you received most of the facts and summations you needed by reading the material in a book. But millennials have received most of their education visually. It is a rare young person who has the time or inclination to sit down and read a newspaper or a book. If it is not put in front of them in a variety of visual experiences, they probably wont retain it. This becomes a generational problem. My college students are so constrained financially. They have to finish the semester with their textbook in much the same pristine condition as when they bought it, or they wont be able to sell it. Recently, I found many of my own college textbooks on my shelves with the pages dog-eared, many passages underlined [this was before hi-lighting]. As a teacher, I have to be able to communicate with students as they participate in my one-semester course on music appreciation. I spend a good portion of the semester teaching them how to use their textbooks which offers on-line visual helps such as you-tube and graphically helping instill concepts that will improve their auditory senses. With the inclusion of power point in the class room, I have found that I need to offer as much visual stimulation to reinforce the listening experience. In preparing the slides for worship, we have to ask ourselves: Do we just want the information on the screen so we dont have to have our Bibles, hymnbooks or worship bulletins? Or are we going to use the visual stimulation to help amplify the experience of the presence of the Holy Spirit? Our Interim Pastor is using these opportunities to communicate the Gospel in a variety of ways. The lights are lowered, our focus is on the front of the church with its two big-screen TVs. Images are brought as a way to focus more clearly on what we are hearing. If we were blind, it would be much easier for us to concentrate on what we hear. But since we are not all blind, we can intensify our experience through the visual. I appreciate those of you who are patient with some of the experimenting that is involved with our evolving use of the TVs. We hope to be able to stream our worship, and offer opportunities for persons to go to our web site to see and hear the worship services they missed. If we hope to be more inviting to millennials, we are going to need the tools for that task. Most of us think we could get along fine just using the hymn books, the Pew Bibles, the Caller, and Worship Bulletins. But maybe most of us need to rethink that. I am sure the millennials with whom I work would expect us to rethink the way we try to communicate with them. I hope God leads you to worship on Sunday. See you in church! In love, Bob Hasty, Worship Team Chair
