The Outreach Ministry

    General Assembly is Coming

Plan to go to Columbus, Ohio, July 18 22 to join the 2015 General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ.) Not only will there be worship unlike any other gathering, but the learning communities are as rich as any conference you might attend elsewhere. Go to ga.disciples.org and look through the 40-page pamphlet describing all the events. They are incredible. We are allowed four voting delegates in addition to clergy members of our congregation. So if you are planning on attending General Assembly, please let Donna know so we can get you registered to vote.

Offering of Letters As of last Sunday, we had 42 letters ready to mail to our

Legislators on behalf of reauthorization of childrens nutrition programs. Thank you to the following people who took the time to write letters for this worthy cause: Ed and Mariette Linberg, Ruth Mary and Marguerite Beal, Sibyl Dittberner, Luanne Bailey, Sherry Herrera, Jill Scott, Pan Van Vleet, Donna Woodbridge, Ben Stuart, Kathy, Alyssa, and Paul Robidoux, Pam Findley-Flor, and Minde and Tim Findley-Grubb. CWS Baby Kits We have collected money for five baby kits already towards our goal of 25. We will continue collecting money to prepare baby kits for Church World Service (CWS) to help with disasters during the month of June. Then after church on June 28, you are invited to stay for lunch in Fellowship Hall and help assemble the kits. A baby kit (under 12 months) consists of: 6 cloth diapers, 2- T shirts or undershirts (no onesies,) 2 washcloths, 2 gowns or sleepers, 2 diaper pins, 1 sweater or sweatshirt, and 2 receiving blankets. The cost of a kit is $39 + $2 for shipping. If you would like to help with this project, just place your check in the offering with baby kit on the memo line. World Outreach provides many opportunities for you to help. We do not expect the whole congregation to help with every project. Pick your favorites and your passion. Thank you for your support.

    Chapel on Wheels Fundraiser

Chapel on Wheels Fundraiser at Pollys is this Monday, June 8 from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Be sure to pick up a flyer on the counter in the office and enjoy breakfast, lunch and/or dinner to support their Weekday Bible Education program. If you are interested in being more involved in this organization, please talk to Donna and she can steer you in the right direction. They need volunteers for all kinds of projects. From Near Homelessness into our Choir and beyond You probably have noticed that every year Mitch brings a few of his students to augment the voices in our choir (usually men.) A few years ago we were privileged to have Tim Alexander as one of those students. Thursday, June 4, the Orange County Register has a front page article about one of those students, Tim Alexander. It is quite a story about how Tim found his home at Cal State Fullerton and through the Guardian Scholars Program. As Tim said in his speech at his graduation a couple of weeks ago, I came to this university as a student at risk of homelessness. My freshmen year I spent every night on a different friends couchThanks to the Guardian School program I was offered a full-ride scholarship to focus on my educational experience, personal growth and professional development. Upon graduation, Tim has been offered nine job interviews all in one day. Thank you Mitch and the Guardian School Program for giving Tim this opportunity. We look forward to great things from this young man. To read the entire article here is the link: http://www.ocregister.com/articles/alexander-664317-says-years.html#slideshow

Homeless 101 Workshop to be offered again. Fullerton ACT is celebrating their 1-year anniversary of educating the Fullerton community. It has been an amazing year as they have helped many individuals learn more about homelessness and engage in volunteer work. Eleven of us attended the event a few months ago. It is well worth your time to spend a morning learning about what is taking place just outside our doors and how we can help. The event will be held from 9 A.M. -12 P.M. on June 13 at Woodcrest Elementary (455 W. Baker St, Fullerton CA 92832). Light refreshments will be served from 8:30 9 A.M. This event is free and open to anyone who is willing to learn and challenge preconceived notions about our neighbors without housing. To register, go to http://fullertonact.org/event/homelessness-101/. Please feel free to pass the event information on to anyone you think would be interested as we would love to have their participation.

Its always nice to hear from people in response to my notes [even if its from another retired minister]. Ed Linberg writes of his attending his daughters

Episcopal Service last week. Choir members were performing impromptu dances as they recessed, even doing so as they awaited the Benediction. He writes,

As the choir marched out, along with the celebrants, some of the Choir members were dancing, or almost doing so. They got to the back of the sanctuary and headed back to the front by the side aisle where they stood for the Benediction. More of them were dancing. Thats BiblicalDavid danced before the Lord in his ephod which my OT Professor at Lexington said was a euphemism for `underwear.

So some Sunday morning, before Pastor Dale pronounces the Benediction, dont be surprised if Ed takes off his choir robe, and starts dancing in his underwear! If any of you decide to complain about Eds style or dancing skills, I should caution you that Michal, the daughter of Saul, accused David of improperly exposing himself before the maidens of the court. Sadly, she found that being critical of how the future king of Israel demonstrated his passion for God would make her unhappy all the days of her life. So I suggest we leave our likes, dislikes, preferences and prejudices at the door as we welcome people who are passionate about their faith, their Savior, and their church. A new member once approached with a concern. He said he couldnt find anybody who was on fire for the Lord! Worship is a time to let that fire out as we witness to the power of Jesus to heal and save all of us. I hope God leads you to bring your fire, your passion and your spirit to worship on Sunday. See you in church! In love, Bob Hasty, Worship Team Chair Food for Thought (excerpt from Home Touch) It aint the parts of the Bible that I cant understand that bother me, its the parts that I do understand. Mark Twain My grandfather kept a diary for the last 10 years of his life. Last week, I was reading through some of the entries. On one occasion, he was visiting his brother and sister who were living in the Los Angeles area. He, himself, was a proud Midwesterner from Iowa. On this particular day, they had been invited out to dinner, and he noted in his diary that the repast included: nicely fried chicken, potatoes and gravy. peas, a salad, young radishes and onions, fresh pocketbook rolls and, for my special benefit, blueberry pie. Pocketbook rolls. Have you ever heard of pocketbook rolls? Perhaps you have, but I hadnt. So I did a little research. What I learned is that pocketbook rolls usually refer to small, round rolls perhaps in the shape of a half moon. They can be opened up to reveal a pocket in which a stuffing of some kind can be placed. In a sense, this roll is a distant cousin of the dumpling. Some versions of the pocketbook roll may only be pastry that has been folded over (with no filling inside) causing it to look like a small change purse. When I read about the pocketbook roll, I immediately thought of Gods Word, the Bible. Its not just a book, although it looks like one. Nor is it an ornamental coffee-table object. Rather, Gods Word is a divine utterance that is nourishing. It feeds our. It gives us strength for daily living. So when we open the Word, we find that it is crammed with delicious truths and promises that help us to be strong throughout the day. Perhaps, this is why the psalmist wrote, O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who take refuge in him. (Psalm 34.8.) Prayer: thank you, gracious God, for offering your Word as food for our souls. In Jesus name. Amen
