LAS VEGAS — England’s Stuart Williams, a third-year Professional Bowlers Asso- ciation competitor, defeated Venezuela’s Ildemaro Ruiz, 246-194, to win the PBA Bay- er Viper Open at South Point Casino and Hotel, becoming the first English bowler ever to win a PBA Tour title. The finals of the Bayer Viper Open, the first of four PBA “animal pattern” cham- pionships contested during the PBA World Series of Bowling, aired Sunday on ESPN. Williams, 30, started the ti- tle match with a spare and then reeled off five strikes in a row, building an insurmountable 44-pin lead when Ruiz failed to convert the 3-10 “baby split” in the fifth frame and missed a 10 pin in the sixth. Along with his first PBA Tour title, Williams earned $15,000 and an automatic berth in the Round of 36 for the end-of- season PBA Tournament of Champions, April 8-15 at Red Rock Lanes in Las Vegas. “This is the best. It’s great. I’m really excited,” Williams said. “Once you’ve won, it makes it easier the second time. It certainly loosens up the arm swing. “Bowling on the PBA Tour is all about learning the differ- ent moves you have to make. I had one full season, and half a season last year, and I feel like I learned a great deal,” he continued. “I spoke to the right people and they helped me out a lot. McCune, who was the top qualifier for the stepladder finals, defeated PBA Hall of Famer and 35-time Tour titlist Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., 245-229, in the championship match for his third career win. “Anytime I can play out- side on the lane and throw it hard it plays in my favor,” said McCune who estimated he was throwing the ball at a little over 20 miles per hour. “It’s old school and that’s where I feel most comfortable.” McCune won his second career title last season when, as tournament leader, he de- feated Norm Duke, 238-237, Eugene McCune Defends PBA Cheetah Open by Jerry Schneider to win the Cheetah Champion- ship. It was during the match play round of that event that McCune broke the PBA nine- game scoring record with a 2,468 pinfall (274.22 aver- age). In this year’s Cheetah Open, conducted on PBA’s Cheetah lane conditioning pat- tern, he averaged 253 for the tournament. “When I bowl on this con- dition there’s a little pressure because I know I need to take advantage of it,” he added. “I was a little worried after the first two frames of the tourna- ment when I had open frames but I went to a different ball and made a couple of other adjustments and got back on track.” McCune was the first player to successfully defend a Tour title since Chris Barnes won back-to-back events in England’s Stuart Williams Wins PBA Bayer Viper Open Third-year competitor becomes first English bowler to win a PBA Tour title less bad shots per game now. I try to throw at least nine good shots a game, rather than six or seven. When you’re playing against the best players in the world, you can’t get away with throwing those bad shots. “Today you had to be more conscious about using your speed adjustments rather than opening up angles. That’s one of the attributes of my game, so I felt comfortable that if I could just get through two games and the lanes didn’t get too easy, I felt like I had a pretty good chance.” Williams established him- self in the first game of the three-game eliminator finals, throwing nine strikes in 12 attempts for a 238. Ruiz was next with a 213, Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., posted a 203 and qualifying leader Mike Fagan of Dallas was eliminat- ed with a 192 for the round’s lowest score. Ruiz led the closely-con- tested game two with a 201. Williams advanced to the title match with a mistake-free 197. Rash was eliminated with a 186 game. A 4-6-10 split in the third frame and an unconvert- ed 1-2-6-10 spare attempt in the ninth ended Rash’s hopes. The victory gave Williams a feeling of redemption after a disappointing 2010-11 season that began when he was denied entry into the United States over a visa problem, causing him to miss the entire PBA World Series of Bowling. “It comes down to what does it take to make you stron- ger,” Williams said. “We all have to go through adversity and it was my turn. Everything has gone well since then.” A title winner in bowling competitions in nine differ- ent countries, Williams was thrilled to add the United States as his 10th. “Being the first English title winner has become my specialty,” he smiled “I was the first Englishman to win on the European Bowling Tour, too, so hopefully this will lead to a flood of English wins on the American tour.” On Sunday, Jan. 29, ESPN will air the finals of the Alka Seltzer Plus Liquid Gels USBC Masters live at 12:30 p.m. ET (9:30 a.m. PT) from Sunset Station’s Strike Zone in Henderson, Nev. GUNG HEY FAT CHOY HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR THE YEAR OF THE DRAGON NORWALK—Chinese New Year is the longest and most important celebration in the Chinese

calendar. People may take weeks of holiday from work to prepare for and celebrate the New Year. Legend has it that in ancient times Buddha called all the animals to a meeting on Chinese New

Year and twelve different animals came. Buddha named a year after each animal and proclaimed that the people born in each animal’s year would have some of the animal’s personality.

If a person was born in 1904, 1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000 or 2012 they are Dragons. Those born in Dragon years are innovative, brave and passionate and since the Dragon is a “bigger than life creature,” you can expect the uttermost this year. Oh dear, next year will be the Year of the Snake and will be on February 10th.

Ralph Morton Fun-Time No-Tap Doubles January Senior Tournament 2012

lucky number 21by Brad Domes ([email protected])

LaS VEgaS: Twenty-one! The number that has changed the lives of so many Las Vegas faith-ful. The Fun-Time Senior no-tap doubles tournament celebrating its 21st tournament may not have changed many lives but it sure was entertaining. Held again at the marvelous 70 lane Orleans Hotel & Casino a record 1330 bowlers took part January 9-11 with many starting early in a special Sunday night blind draw. A new wrinkle was added with an individual all events tournament compiling scores over three days for each respective squad. Mixed in was a singles no-tap tournament held on Tuesday. Needless to say lots of opportunities for these seniors to show their stuff and many did.

The tournament is a senior 50+ no-tap doubles and has two daily squads (A & B) that make up a single day tournament. There are two divisions with this tournament divided at a team average 329. Division 1 is 329 and below with Division 2 being 330 and above. This breakout was used for all three days. No divisional play in the blind draw.

Blind Draw Honors: 64 teams participated in the blind draw with Gordon Benson (874) & Judy Robosson (876) leading the pack with only a three pin advantage over the team of Russ Valentine (300-916) & Joyce Reynolds (831). No other 300 was bowled but coming close were: Larry Minnich 298, John Potts 297,290, Tom Kutz 290. Notables: Sandra McGee 256 & Lenora Bee 253.

Tuesday: Scoring improves for 111 teams with an 1870 total from Connie Byrne (240-878) & Virginia Schuetzle (278-992) as they “stormed” their way into first over the teams of Igmidio Gen-erillo (830) & Avito Adan (300-954), Jerry Lawless (888) & Lorraine Redman (865), Gene Villano (809) & Charlotte Ontiveros (255-943) and Tom (300-869) & Amelia (243-868) Kutz. DOWNEY—Top seed Gold Coast Hotel faced the Kegel threat this week. Kegel’s Rick Easley, who fell a pin shy of leading the league with his 260-256-231/747, led his team to four wins, with some assistance from Kurt Arakaki 265-224/675 and Kevin Yamauchi 246-213/645. Andrea Snyder 269-239/675 and Mike Cammarata 214-225-211/650 needed some help from their teammates to pad their overall win lead.

Charlie Kinstler 229-274/697, Paul Barraco 257-227/668 and Deeronn Booker 237-236/664 led Sysco to four wins over Heineken USA’s league leading Ramon Torres 268-245-235/748 and Larry Gray 26-245-212/663. Sysco came within six pins of a sweep, but Heineken man-aged to squeak it out.

Powerhouse Video took four from Linder Insurance thanks to Vernon Adams 226-218-285/729 and Bruce Williams 211-268/675, while Brandon Grant 217-224/621 and his Linders team managed to pull off the first game win.

ABTA got the best of Tifco Industries in the last game with a little bit of teamwork and a bit of luck. Mikey Villareal bowled well and led the pair with his 237/620, and Ron Peter got lined up that last game and shot 246/609.

Herzog Insurance won four from the struggling Bowlium team. Gabriel Martinez 205-244-207/656, Steve Gurrieri 212-231/628 and Will Jackson 223-200/614 led Herzog, while only Arnold Cheesman 256/626 found anything.

Tri-Star Vending continued their unfortunate plummet, this time at the hands of Erickson Foods. Ricky Kilgore ended his streak of not being mentioned in the article after shooting 218-258/624, and teammate Andy Clark added 238/615.

Brylaw Accounting made a small jump up the standings after winning four from Clyde’s Video Games. Larry Stephens shot 209-200-246/655 to lead his team while Billy Myers Jr. contributed a 235-224/630.

Threadworks pulled off a sweep of Pro Approach using some luck and Eric Snow’s 254/628. They jumped up to tenth place.

Take care and have a great week.

LAS VEGAS — We re-turned to South Point Hotel & Casino Lanes for our January Open across 4 days where we saw 469 entrants come out, join the fun and support the ABTA. We had a modest shot making the cut scores for the men of +74 on Thursday, +72 on Friday, +73 on Saturday, +72 on Sunday, and +81 for the Re-Entry. For the Women they were +54 on Thursday, +41 on Friday, +46 on Satur-day, +33 on Sunday, and +49 for the Re-Entry. The Super Seniors added to the board (4 men and 2 females) were Esther Tambio (+37), Anita Smith(+18), Sam Sanicolas (+56), Phil Magno (+53), Ely Cruz (+53), and Art Windsor (+49). Super Seniors are men 63 plus, and ladies only 55. That would give us 53 bowlers making it to the semi-finals.

eek. Top Quaifiers for the Men was a 3 way tie with a +154, Virgil Hilvano, Tomas Chavez, and Andrew Navarro. For the women it was Rose Si-cam with a +114. They all get a paid entry into a future regular ABTA event. We had Rose Si-cam draw for the Match Series. She drew a 637. We had one bowler that bowled this score during qualifying, and it was none other than lucky Tomas Chavez. (We will estimate the Match Series at $300 at Covina event.) The last bowl-er for the 3-6-9 roll-off this week was Theresa Fiore. She needed to get four nine counts or strikes to take home $300. She did not have the full num-ber of tournaments in the past 12 months to qualify. Theresa was not able to pull this feat so she took home a consolation of $100. We will add $100 to the pot, and it will be at $1,600 Saturday at Covina Bowl.

In our optional doubles, tops were Andrew Navarro and Bernie Navarro with a 1425 for $170. Finishing sec-ond was Emilio Flores and Tomas Chavez with 1422 for $150. There were a total of $1,880 paid out in doubles and 27 paid spots with low to cash of 1321.

After bowling all three games for the semi-finals, fin-ishing in first was Mark An-drews with a blistering + 175. Finishing in second place to sit out the first round was the Pride of (Hong Kong) Vickie Wang with a +147. Andrews had the honor of drawing the Match Game worth $3,500. He drew a 168. After a review of all the scores bowled, we had a whopping (NINE) bowl-ers who shot that score were, Greg Velarde, Allan Calabio, Elvin Godoy, Shaun Suase, Ray Reynaldo Jr, Gina Velarde Jim Childers, Chris Buck and Brandon Bushrod. We will estimate the pot for Covina at $1,600.

This would bring us to our top 32 Match Play finals. In the first round, the fifteen los-ers were Danny Alcayde, Al-lan Calabio, Don Eide, Tomas Chavez, Michael Benavides,

In the third round, the losers were Kmel Cunanan, Adrian Pelayo, Kelly Wynn, and Jennifer Esquerra, they each received checks of $300 each. This would get us down to the final four bowlers. At this point, our horses would be paying anywhere from a low of $63 (Virgil Hilvano) to a high of $378 (Michael Davis and Pete Van Asch) depend-ing on who would win. In this round we saw Dennis Kelsey (11th seed) bowling Pete Van Asch (9th seed) who is bat-tling multiple health issues that include Alzheimer’s. In this match it was Dennis who would continue his hot bowl-ing and advance with a 253 to 225 victory. In the other match we saw Virgil Hilvano (14th seed) bowling Michael Davis (31st seed). This is another close match that saw Michael Davis advance to the next round with a 228 to 215. Vir-gil Hilvano and Pete Van Asch finished in 4th and 5th getting checks for $750 each.

Our semi-final match was all set on this Sunday Evening. It would be bowled on Lanes 49 and 50 as we were on the high side at Southpoint Ho-tel & Casino. In the weekly “horses” we would see Den-nis paying $161 and Michael paying $378 if they would win their match. In this match we saw Dennis was on a mission as he would jump out to a lead and stay there til the end. He would finish with a 211/241 to 162/194 and advance to the title match. Finishing in 3rd place was Michael Davis, who bowled so well this week for $2,000. For those lucky “in-vestors” that had Dennis as a horse, he paid $161.

The title game was set and bowled on Lanes 47 and 48. Mark Andrews, as the top qualifier elected to have Den-

nis start the match. That he did by starting with a spare. Mark came up and matched Dennis with his own spare. In the 2nd frame he left the 8-10 and only picked up one. Dennis would come up and double on his two shots to jump out to a lead. Mark was able to come back with his own strike and spare to give him 47 in the third. Dennis came up in his 4th and 5th frames with a spare and strike to give him a 89 after the 4th frame and a 21 pin lead. Mark would get another split in the 5th frame to put him down by 30+ pins. It would stay this way for the next few frames. Mark was able to get a double in the 8th and 9th frame, but could not get one in the 10th and paved the way for Dennis Kelsey to win his 2nd ABTA Championship in Las Vegas, finishing with a 196/226 to 179/210. He would take home $8,500 for 1st place and $4,600 for max. Cash and Carry, $150 for wearing an ABTA shirt, $600 for bowling in 29+ squads, $600 for Quali-fying on Thursday Night for a total of $14,450. $4,000 went to Mark who bowled very well in this one.

TOM SMITH Is The Top Citrus Belt

bowler at Military Championships

by Frank WeilerLAS VEGAS — Tom

Smith retired from the Air Force and settled in San Ber-nardino to enjoy the good life and get serious about bowl-ing. He was always a good bowler but retirement meant it was time to make an effort to become a great bowler. His mantra is: practice, practice, practice. His pursuit of excel-lence has not been in vain.

After years of averaging from 200 to 210, Tom broke through the 220 barrier in 2010 with a 225 average, followed by 223 in 2011. As April 2012 approaches, Tom is scoring at a 221 clip. Not bad for a guy over 65 years.

While performing at an elite level at home, Smith headed to Vegas last week to make his mark against the best senior retired military bowlers in the world. After twelve grueling games Tom found himself five hundred dollars richer. He placed fifth in Singles and in the top ten for All Events.

Smith averaged 221 for the tournament.

The Military Champion-ships are held annually in Las Vegas to determine who are the best military bowlers: ac-tive duty, retired, and senior retired.

All participants must be on active duty or retired from the Department of Defense. The tourney is a scratch event man-aged by HIGH ROLLER that attracts nearly one thousand bowlers.

Tom Smith would like to thank MARV SARGENT for drilling his bowling balls and the BOWLING NEWS for supporting Citrus Belt and military bowlers.

BOB HILOVSKY Has Surfaced

at Moreno Valley Bowl

by Frank WeilerMORENO VALLEY - Cit-

rus Belt Hall of Famer Bob Hilovsky is bowling at Moreno Valley Bowl and scoring like he did twenty years ago. Bob is averaging 228 in the Scratch Challenge League. He is sec-ond only to MARK DYER, who is cruising at a 236 clip.

For those who don’t re-member, Hilovsky was one of the first Citrus Belt bowlers to average 230 or better. Back in the early 1990s he and MIKE RICK of Redlands battled each other for Citrus Belt dominance. In 1992 they tied for high average at 230.

Hilovsky is one of best ever to lace up a pair of bowl-ing shoes in the Citrus Belt. Thanks to the BOWLING NEWS we are able to let all of our old-timers know that Bob is well and scoring high. My thanks go out to WILL JUNE for tipping me off to Hilovsky’s whereabouts.

• EXPERT PLUGGING AND DRILLING• BALLS, BAGS, SHOES AND ACCESSORIES

CERRITOS/NORWALK – Hello there from the JAT Farm Club headquarters. Now that the holidays are over and my job has slowed down a touch, it’s time to catch everyone up on our most recent tournaments. With a three week break between tournaments and three tournaments to write about, I’ll be doing one writing about one tournament each week for the next three straight weeks. Therefore, this week we’re covering our special Christmas tournament, held at two centers over two weeks, in mid-December. I know it sounds stupid to write about something so long ago, but not everyone knows the details and these juniors deserve to see their accomplishments in print. For some this may be the only time they’re in an article and I stress that all of these juniors should be keeping a scrapbook of articles for college re-cruiting and for when they’re too old to remember.

The Christmas tournament consisted of qualifying rounds at two bowling centers. The first round of eight qualifying games took place on December 11th, at AMF Cerritos Lanes. From this round, the top six bowlers earned a spot into the bracket elimina-tion round. There was some very good scoring throughout the day. We also took a break after four games and did a Last Man Standing event, which everyone seemed to enjoy. Some of the highlights from this first day of qualifying was Terrence Robin-son 220-225-224-279, Bianca Taylor 245-268-223-226, Daniel Martinez 267, Baujee Harlan 256, Stephanie Zavala 255-237, Spencer Van Rijsbergen 248-253-235, Treven Goldsmith 233-225, Eric Torrence 225, Tyler Salverda 223, Thomas Iriye 222, and James Knapp 222. The six to automatically advance were Robinson (+116), Van Rijsbergen (+76), Taylor (+71), Martinez (+15), Salverda (-6), and Goldsmith (-16).

The following Sunday, we moved up the 605 freeway to Key-stone Lanes to continue/complete this unique tournament format. Here we had a “second chance” qualifying round of five games. The first round scores were dropped, we welcomed in some bowlers that didn’t make it on day one, and we took the top eight bowlers from this round. The six bowlers above did bowl this additional round, only for match play seeding, based on the pin total of the two rounds. Besides, they paid – might as well play.

As you’ll see, the scoring at Keystone was outstanding and here the highlights start with Robinson 221-297, Goldsmith 224-222-269, Sarah Schneider 269, Van Rijsbergen 246-237-268-236, Kyle Duster 268, Taylor 247-259, Frank Aldrete 232-246, John Struckman 244, Harlan 236, Salverda 232, Karlie Loop 232, Jason Meister 227, Michael Ma 222, Iriye 221, Knapp 221, and Eric Mandzuch 220. Here the top seed was Aldrete at plus 33 and the eighth to move on came in at minus 61.

After getting the fourteen bowlers seeded, we continued with the open division’s format of bracket elimination, best two out of three games. The top two seeds (Van Rijsbergen – 2877 pins and Robinson 2777 pins) got to relax a bit with first round byes. The bowlers to advance into the round of eight, all did so in two straight games. Harlan advanced over Loop with a 252 game and then 237 to Loop’s 226. It was Salverda over newcomer David Schneider, Martinez over the other newcomer S. Schneider, Tay-lor (248 game) over Struckman, Duster (223) over Aldrete, and Goldsmith (288) over Meister.

In the round of eight it was Van Rijsbergen over Harlan in two straight, Goldsmith (254) over Salverda in two games, Tay-lor (222-259) over Martinez (234), and Robinson (236-249-278) over Duster (245-245-200) in three games. In the semi-finals (round of four), it took three games for Van Rijsbergen to dispose of Goldsmith (247) and Robinson (240) quickly put away Taylor (223) in two. And so it came down to the top two seeds and both of them seeking their first Farm Club title. This too was quickly resolved in two games as Robinson took game one 279 to Van Rijsbergen’s 227 and captured the title 227-191. Congratulations Terrence on your first (of many) JAT title. Next week, opening tournament of 2012.

Bowling Writers Focus on Youth

NORWALK—The Califor-nia Bowling Writers are put-ting plans in place for another spectacular luncheon at the Sacramento DoubleTree Ho-tel in June. Chairman Mary Lynly and Barbara Metzinger had a “taste test” of the menu being offered. Deciding we had all had enough chicken the fare will include Rosemary Garlic Roasted Pork Loin with apple-apricot sauce and vege-tables and potato and Tri-Color Cheese Tortellini with Grilled Italian Sausage (can also be served without sausage) with Peas, Pancetta, Fresh Basil and Roma Tomatoes. Dessert is Chocolate Caramel Almond Crunch Cake with Caramel Sauce and Fresh Strawberries. Yum! Are you hungry yet?

Chef Charlie Conner vis-ited with us following the taste and he was most cooperative in preparing everything just the way we wanted it. A testi-monial from staff said he is the best chef they have ever had.

This year’s CBW luncheon will focus on Youth offering

CONGRATS TO STAN BOOTH FOR HIS 300 GAMES ON 1-8

RIVERSIDE…Thanks to Ed Abakumoff for his superb write ups last week about S tan Booth’s perfect game and the deaf youth league being formed in Riverside.

Last year on a couple deaf tournaments Booth had strung lots of strikes and came close. So this writer is happy that Booth fi-nally put 12 together in one game in his league.

Booth’s 300 maybe the first 300 by a deaf bowler this year as this writer had not from any other yet. Read below about Jim Theyken’s 298 on Jan.10.

Why didn’t Riverside Lanes report Booth’s gem to Bowling News to include in its Honor Scores on the front page?

KUDOS TO EDWIN MILLER FOR STARTING A DEAF YOUTH LEAGUE

RIVERSIDE—This is a great one and this writer hopes Mill-er is contacting USBC Youth department for help in start up one. USBC office in Arlington, TX has all to rescores he may need to make the work easier.

BOB JONES GOT 11-IN-ROW PLAGUE FROM USBC FOR HIS 296

WINNETKA—For his 296 rolled on Dec. 28th at Canoga Park Lanes Bob Jones received a congratulatory letter and 11-in-row Award from USBC. That’s Bob’s third 11-in-Row Award.

On Jan. 18 at Canoga Park Lanes Jones went on a strike fest starting off with games of 269 and 259 and lost his line. He fin-ished with a clean game of 197 and instead of a big series he got a 728.

JIM THEYKEN HAD 299 LAST OCT. AND 298 ON JAN. 16SAN DIEGO—After reading about Bob Jones’ 296, Jim

Theyken reported that he missed 300 twice this season. On last October 3rd he left a 9-pin on his 12th ball for a 299 and 703 series in Jakes Singles Match Play League at Parkway Bowl.

Theyken said last week he left 4-7 pins on this 12th ball for a 298 game and finished with a 738 series in the same league at Parkway.

The lefthander, who just renewed his PBA membership for this year, said he would not be at Fountain Bowl for the PBA tournament there. He hopes to get a sponsor so he could enter in two PBA Senior tournaments in Las Vegas and Brentwood, CA this summer.

ABAKUMOFF TOPS DEAF TRAVEL AT KEYSTONE WITH 835 NORWALK—The bowlers of So. Calif. Deaf Traveling

league found the lanes at Keystone Bowl tough and all eight teams bowled below their average. Only Ed Abakumoff and couple others hit over their average,

Abakumoff led the honor rill of just 6 bowlers with the lobe 800, an 835 from 193-188- 220-234. His 835 was mire than 120 pins ahead of next three clustered with 700 plus as Francisco Na-varro’s 709, Gorman Low’s 708 and Jeff Stansell’s 706. League’s leading average Bob Jones barely made the roll list by finishing with a 207 and the only other 200 besides Abakumoff’s two Wil-liam Golyer’s 201. Ironically all six are the top 6 in this league.

The league leader, Navarro’s powerhouse Covina again swept 16-4 from Golyer’s 3rd place O County for its 5th straight sweep, bolstering its lead to runaway 27 points. Jones’ 2nd place S F Valley lost a hard fought battle 9-11 to Abakumoff’s 7th place Riverside as Riverside swept the 4th game for 4 points.

The league thanks Keystone management for having them bowl on their lanes. The league’s next trip dare is Feb. 5th at Jewel City Bowl but that is Super Bowl date and 5 bowlers are football fanatics and would not bowl on that date, So Secretary Treasurer Bob Taylor will see if Jewel City Bowl would accept the league on Feb. 12 instead of 5th. Taylor will inform the bowl-ers of the change.

half-price luncheon for all youth who attend. To further enhance the Youth experi-ence, International Bowling Campus Director of Youth Development Chad Murphy will be our featured speaker. Spearheading the formation of Youth Education Services (YES) which attracted noted industry members to contrib-ute financially to the effort, Murphy says, “I am extremely grateful to see these leaders in the bowling industry step for-ward in support of our future and the YES Fund continues to

be a way to unite all of bowl-ing for the common goal of promoting youth involvement in the sport.”

CBW takes great pleasure in welcoming our members and guests to the beautifully remodeled Sacramento Dou-bleTree Hotel and thank our long time sponsors Eldorado Hotel Casino and the National Bowling Stadium. Keep an eye out for our flyer in the CUSBC delegate packets and info will be on our website soon. Save the date – June 9th 2012.

As all of our younger ball league bowlers sat back and feasted on pizza. James bowled the first 9. As the kids were excited James kept his composure and buried the next 3 strikes. Shouts were heard in San Diego because of James “300”. Great job and keep bowling your best.

CHRIS ALLEN TATTOOED THE PINSby Roberta McNaught

ANAHEIM—Chris Allen, who is known for his colorful artistic tats, left a few colorful tats on the pins last week in the 590 Classic. His needle point shots earned him a 967 series on games of 214, 257, 265, and 231.

Those joining the 900 Club were: Hong Kha 266/952, John Conway 268/912, Larry Nordstrom 235/905, and Ron Douglass 259/902. Other scorers to highlight were: Terry Brent 256/892, Norm Walker 233/889, Alan Bloom 247/880, Shig Shozi 248/856, Kantral Williams 229/829, Martin Angulo 246/824, Don Gardner 244/823, Bo Vrabel 236/821, Steve Sparks 232/818, Janine Ditch 224/812, Dan Baker 256/811, David McNaught 237/811, Janet Anderson 230/806, Eric Kim 245/802, Nicole Abbott 266, John Phil-lips 245, Nancy M. Smith 245, John Velasquez 240, Ander-son Alcaraz 235, Jim Moore 234, Karen Bagnall 234, Dick McKenzie 234, Jessica Diso 230, Ed Hermance 229, Bob Gosnell 224, Frank Bellinder 216, Cora Bussey 216, Tony Chaco 216, Orlando Vanegas 216, Genka Cabatu 215, Joy McGregor 215, Rose Williams 213, Juan Sandoval 212, Miguel Rosales 209, Steve Basdakis 207, Rita Sparks 207, Adrian Bradley 208, Drew Parkin 203, and Jerry Roddam 202.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to Stacy Rider who lost her beloved Mother to cancer last week. More bad luck hits our league as we found out that Al Lara broke two fingers on his bowling hand and will be sidelined for the rest of the season. We hope he will be back and ready to bowl in the summer league.
