Rugby Union McTaggart Cup
Last Wednesday, Leeton Public School had two teams
participate in the Rugby Union McTaggart Cup in Wagga
Wagga.
Our Stage 3 Students opened their play against Mater Dei.
From the initial kick off, LPS quickly produced the ball at each
break down and with some slick passing, frequently got the
ball out wide to score with great regularity, finishing the game
ahead 8 tries to nil. In their next game against St Mary's 2
(from Young), the team again produced the ball at the ruck
after many strong tackles, turning their defence into attack,
eventually winning the game 4 tries to 1. This placed LPS
against Cootamundra Primary School in the semi final.
Cootamndra quickly built a two try lead through some quick
play and speed on the outside. Leeton Public soon started to
run the ball with greater determination, reproducing the ball at
each break down to score and tighten the game. With
mounting pressure, we approached the Cootamundra line, but
fell only metres short of scoring the equaling try on the final
bell. Cootamundra won the game 2 tries to 1, and went on to
win the Stage 3 side of the tournament.
The Stage 2 LPS Team started the day against Yanco Public
School. The game quickly opened up with many of our
students being able to run through some open space and
ended the game winning 6 ties to nil. In the second game, we
played against St Mary's 2 (from Young) in what became a
very back and forth match. Each time we scored, St Mary's
would answer back, until we scored a try late in the game to
win 3 tries to 2. This placed the Stage 2 team in the final
against Griffith Public. Again, another back and forth game
ensued, with each team pushing their opponent near the try
line without success. It wasn't until the last minute of play that
we scored, and the final hooter went off. LPS was the Stage 2
winner of the McTaggart Cup one try to nil, and has been
asked to participate in the competition further in Canberra in
May (details will be sent home when made available). Solomon
Liu was also named the player of the match in the Stage 2
final.
Not only did we have two LPS teams participate at the event,
but we also had some students support Yanco Public by
playing on their teams throughout the day. Congratulations to
all the students who played with enthusiasm
and sportsmanship throughout the day. Well done Kade
