Already we are experiencing a very busy term, about to get even busier with all the sports events on our school planner. Students & staff are all working extremely hard. As I walk around the school and visit classrooms I am impressed with the way students and staff are displaying the positive behaviour for learning PBL by following CREW values. As we live in an ever changing world I believe that schools need to prepare each child to cope with these changes. At Cleve AS we want each child to be a positive, responsible, successful member of the community. This involves the development of academic, social, emotional, spiritual and tolerance skills. We are always looking for ways to improve our service to each child. One important part of the development is our connection and partnership with you the parents of our students. We will keep working to improve our communication structures. I look forward to hearing from you with any constructive ideas. Crew Values Our CREW values of: Care, Respect, Enthusiasm for learning and Working together are helping us to prepare our students for the future. Please continue to talk to your children and us, about ways that we can further enhance the skills we as a community want to see in our students. Governing Council

The Annual General Meeting of the School Governing Council will be held in March so please think about your involvement in decision making and governance of our school. If you would like any further information about the School Governing Council please contact the Chairperson Deb Taheny or myself at the school. The first meeting for this year will be held next Tuesday 19th Feb. in the staffroom at 5.30pm, if you are not on the School Governing Council and would like to attend please contact us at the school. Parents can attend as observers. If you have an agenda item please contact Deb Taheny. We value your involvement in our school and your child’s education. 2018 SACE Results

The year 12 results from last year were very pleasing. We had 100% SACE completion and the students who applied for an ATAR were successful in getting their first or second choice at University. I congratulate all the students on their achievements and thank the staff for the hard work, dedication and support given to each student, especially leading up to the end of last year. On behalf of the school community I wish all of last year’s Year 12 students all the best for their future and thank them for choosing Cleve Area School to complete their secondary education. As a staff, at Cleve Area School:

We want all students to display a positive attitude towards learning and school life;

We expect all students to attend every lesson so they have a chance to succeed;

We encourage all students to achieve their best; and

We are all accountable to each other and to our community.

I truly believe that Cleve Area School is a great place to learn, work and play. I invite you all to join us in a partnership to provide the best for our children. Thank you

Deputy news

Even though we are only in week 3 the school calendar is filling up very quickly. Please keep an eye out for information and notices for the many events coming up in the next few weeks eg. Year 4-12 Swimming Carnival, R-3 Dash n Splash, Primary Interviews, Year 4-12 Sports Day, Interschool Sports Day, Year 6 Aquatics Camp and Accelerated Reader Reward. Phew, a busy, action packed term coming up amongst some outstanding learning opportunities.

Open Afternoon

Yesterday families of students from R-12 visited their child’s classes for our annual ‘Open Afternoon’ from 1:30pm. This was a terrific opportunity to have a look through classrooms and facilities and have a chat with our staff. Many thanks to our wonderful SRC students will greet visitors at the front office and offered maps or guidance to areas of interest. Photographs

With the many extra curricular events coming up on the school calendar it is time to remind families that when you are taking photographs, films or digital images of your child’s participation in school events, please be mindful to not capture images of other students and staff with your child unless they consent for you to take these for personal use only. Images taken of other students and staff should not be placed on social media such as Facebook or Instagram. We appreciate your respect and co-operation in this matter. R-3 Dash & Splash

On Friday1st March R-3 students will participate in the annual Dash n Splash event from 11:30 to 1:00pm. I will be sending home information this week and will also be looking for parental assistance to help supervising students between events. Let’s hope the weather is kind.

Student Representative Council

Well done to our SRC coordinators, Middle and Senior School – Emily Wight and Trevor MacDonough Junior School – Sarah Agnew and Anna Williamson

for coordinating the SRC induction ceremony so early in the year. Well done to the SRC executive for their public speaking skills to emcee the ceremony in such a confident and organised manner. The SRC are a very active group in our school and we look forward to a wonderful 2019 year with this team. PORT POWER VISIT

A reminder that Port Power representatives visit on Tuesday, 19th February to deliver some inspiring messages about health, fitness and sportsmanship. They usually allow some time for autographing so students may like to bring some memorabilia to be signed. SAPSASA SOFTBALL

Best wishes to our 6/7 students for the upcoming Softball trials on Wednesday 27th February. If successful, selected students will represent our school in the Central Eyre Peninsula team in a SAPSASA softball carnival in Adelaide in week 11. Please see Mr Jack Kenny for further information about registering for this if interested. R-5 ASSEMBLY

Our first primary assembly will be held

Thursday 7th March In the Uniting Church Hall

12:15pm Mrs Sarah Agnew’s Year R/1 class will be presenting this assembly. As well as sharing some of the great classroom learning happening in the school, we will officially welcome all new students to the school. We hope to see lots of parents there.

NAPLAN

Year 3,5,7 and 9 students will sit the first ‘online’ version of NAPLAN this year in week 3 of term 2. There is an information flyer attached to this newsletter for parents. If you have any questions about your child’s involvement in this process, please contact Natasha Agars or Ray Marino at the school. To prepare for the first online test, all schools in Australia attempt a trial on 28th March to check that our technology will facilitate multiple schools and students accessing the program simultaneously. This is a trial of the SYSTEM, not an assessment of student skills; student results are not viewed or assessed. Natasha Agars Deputy Principal

Swimming Carnival

The Year 4-12 Swimming Carnival is on Friday of next week, 22rd February. Last year’s competition was extremely close with Cooranga House having a 1 point win over Nurrugy to take home the shield for the third year in a row. Killara House were great at practices and out of the pool taking home the Swimming Carnival Team Spirit Award! The Team Spirit Award shield is ‘up for grabs’ at each house sporting competition. Students are judged on how well they participate, cheer and support their team. Students are encouraged to dress up in their team colours at the carnival and come up with chants/war cries. However, a standard of dress suitable for attendance at a school function and swimming is required and because of the effect on chemical levels, students are asked not to put dyes in hair. The day commences at 9.05 a.m. and concludes in time for the usual departure of buses. There will be a lunch break from approximately 12.30pm - 1.00pm. The SRC will be selling drinks throughout the day whilst the Parents and Friends will have tea/coffee available. The Year 9 Canberra Trip Fundraising Committee will have yiros for sale. If the past is anything to go by the food served up is usually beautiful so make sure you get your order in!! Programmes will be available to interested parents from next Wednesday at the front office or on the day. The Swimming Carnival is a normal school day and all students are expected to attend. We hope you are able to support the occasion by attending for at least part of the day. For many years now we’ve had a great number of spectators which has created an exciting atmosphere for the students. To help clarify queries about the Swimming Carnival the following is an outline of how the day is organised. The carnival is split into the following: Individual Championship Events Races designed to cater for 'stronger' swimmers with one competitor from each house in each race swimming: Freestyle, Breast Stroke, Butterfly (Inter and Senior only) and Backstroke.

All races are 34m (2laps) Individual Medley (Backstroke, Breaststroke, Freestyle)

Sub Junior and Junior are 17m (1 lap) each leg

Inter and Senior is 34m (2 laps) each leg. Age Events Races designed for all competitors regardless of their swimming ability. An unlimited number of competitors are able to compete in heats at the start of the day. The fastest four swimmers in each stroke, in each age group, regardless of house, go through to a final. All races are 17m (1 lap) - all age groups do Breast Stroke, Backstroke and Freestyle. Team Novelty Events Races designed first and foremost to encourage non-swimmers and beginner swimmers to 'have a go'. - Ring Relay - mixed teams for sub junior and junior - Tube Relay - mixed teams for sub junior, junior, intermediate and senior - Peg Scramble - mixed teams for sub junior, junior and intermediate - Ball Dribble - mixed teams for intermediate and senior - Chariot Race - mixed sub junior and senior combined. Relays Team Freestyle and Medley relays with teams of four competitors from each house. Sub junior and junior legs are 17m, intermediate and senior are 34m House meetings will be held next Tuesday to enable Leaders to finalise teams. Every effort is made by House Captains, Vice Captains and supervising teachers to ensure all students are able to participate in at least three events. Hopefully an Individual’s events will be spread out throughout the day but this isn’t always possible. Primary students will record their events in diaries after House Meetings.
