Issue No. 23 February 24, 2016 Principal’s Corner Dear Fisher Parents, Welcome Back! I hope you had a most enjoyable February break. Our Fisher School Advisory Council meets tonight at 7:00 p.m. in our school library. At times, we invite guests to share information regarding topics of interest to parents. This month, Dr. Marie Alcock will be joining us to discuss Standards Based Grading and Reporting. Dr. Alcock has been working with our LGUSD K-5 teachers to design standards based report cards, and recently met with our middle school teachers to discuss standards based grading practices. As president of Learning Systems Associates (LSA), Dr. Marie Alcock serves as a national and international education consultant. Working with the American Education and Research Association and People to People, Dr. Alcock has traveled to countries to share and learn about what countries are working on in the field of education. In her role as president of LSA, Dr. Alcock serves as a national and international education consultant. In addition, she is currently on the faculty of Walden University’s School of Education, where she serves as a lead professor in curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices. She has spent the last 23 years working in public and private education as a teacher administrator. She has taught in Vermont, North Carolina, New Jersey, and New York City schools. A public advocate, she founded the nonprofit TEN list (Tomorrow’s Education Network), which is dedicated to connecting the greater community with students in the classroom to improve student literacy. Set in 1840 Missouri, it is the tale of young Tom Sawyer and the never ending mischief which he so often finds himself a part of; whether it's matching wits with Aunt Polly, tricking his friends into white-washing a fence for him, or narrowly escaping the clutches of a murderous villain. Along with best friend Huckleberry Finn and love interest Becky Thatcher, the greatest Tom Sawyer exploits are plucked from the book and plopped onto the stage.

Instrumental Musicians in Honor Ensembles
Fisher music students represented our school in four instrumental honor ensembles in January and February. Top left: 8th grade violinists Miles Stamp and Cathy Wang, and 8th grade bassist Liam Hoole were all selected to be part of the CMEA Bay Section Jr. High Honor Orchestra.
Top right: 8th grade French Horn player Keiju Oda was selected to be part of the CMEA Bay Section Jr. High Honor Band.
Bottom left: 7th grade euphonium player Audrey Miller auditioned for and was accepted into the Northern California Jr. High Honor Band, where she placed first chair!
Bottom right: 8th grade violinist Lauren Lee auditioned for and was accepted into the California All-State Jr. High Honor Orchestra. This is a first for the Fisher Orchestra program!
Congrats to all of these fine musicians for their hard work and accomplishments. They represented our school and our music program beautifully!

84% of goal reached; first round of grants approved Thanks to all the families who supported LGEF’s major fundraiser with donations and pledges from the beginning of the school year through the end of January. We reached 84% of our target goal of $750,000, which is enough to approve the first round of grants due this month. These grants fund the salaries of our art and music teachers. LGEF still needs to raise $120,000 by the end of the school year to fund remaining program resources.
