WHAT IS CADS?It might appear that what CADS does is simple: we provide space for artists, startups, musicians, cre-ative companies and events.

But CADS is more than just a land-lord!

CADS has initiated several projects to further its aims: to engage cre-ativity and boost the artistic output of the local area.

SKINN, Art Forge and DLS are three organisations, all started by CADS and continuing to work in-house for the betterment of the area and cultural output of the city.

This document aims to introduce you to CADS and its affiliated projects.

Welcome!

The creative studio and develop-ment spaces are just one aspect of CADS, which also created andsupports several associated or-ganisations including SKINN, Dirty Little Secret, SPORF and Sheffield Art Forge. These organisations help CADS to reach it’s wider aims while forging links within the local and international community and promoting new talent in a range of areas. Programs run by DLS andthe Art Forge help to establish CADS as a supporter of local busi-nesses and a platform for upcom-ing artists. The SKINN projects work to encourage regeneration of the local area, and SPORF, a fourthprogram which is currently be-ing established, aims to become a marketplace for the creativecommunity, supporting artists, including those already based at CADS, by showcasing and sellingtheir work online.

Music & artist management, syncing, events, publish-ing, projection mapping.

Itchy Pig Record Company is based at CADS, and is the creation of Leeroy Powell, a music fanatic who aims to promote new artists regardless of genre, con-centrating on sounds that are powerful, fun and in-novative. During his time at CADS, Leeroy has moved from working alone in a small studio, to employing a team of 8 staff spread across several studio spaces. Itchy Pig represents artists from Germany, France and Italy as well as the UK, including such names as Moodymanc, Saytek, James Johnsons, and the label’s in-house band Burleskimo.

Interview with Leeroy Powell, Now Then Magazine, Feb 2012

Inspired by the vibrant music scene of Sheffield, Itchy Pig is the co-host of regular DLS club night Collect!, featuring its own artists and playing sounds from disco to deep house. Having already branched out into film, documentary and video game soundtracks, Itchy Pig are currently working towards physical releases both on CD and vinyl, and offer services such as projection mapping, syncing and publishing as well as events and artist management.

Studio HoldersEle Maudsley

Ele Maudsley is a jewellery maker and silversmith, who graduated from Sheffield Hallam University in June 2011. Soon after that she began renting a work-shop space in Pebbledash Studios, where her focus is on creating ‘wearable art’, objects that function as sculptural pierces as well as jewellery that can inter-act with the body.

Inspired by natural forms, surrealism and the Steam-punk aesthetic, Ele combines skills such as etching and anticlastic raising in order to create pieced that are bold, versatile and theatrical. Ele’s work has been displayed in exhibitions across Sheffield, such as in

‘Galvanize’ at the Furnival Gallery in 2011, and the 2012 ‘Under The Sea’ exhibition at the Millennium Galleries. Working as a self employed artist, Ele re-ceived a commended award for Smallworkers Design from the Goldsmith’s Craft and Design Council Awards in 2011. She was also featured inthe ‘New Designers’ exhibition at the Business Design Centre in London. Recently, Ele has created a more commercial range of jewellery for the ‘One for Luck’ vintage and craft fair, and is looking ahead at creating more intricate pieces inspired by Victorian technology and Gothic architecture.

Studio HoldersDangernoise Audio

Dangernoise audio recognises sound as being one of the primary universal energies/organizational prin-ciples. What started out as a hobby project for two grumpy sound techs has over the years developed or-ganically into a small-scale system hire and bespoke speaker cabinet business. End of 2013 will see the launch of something very special – the culmination of several years’ research – in the form of a totally horn-loaded quasi four-way loudspeaker system. The driving ideals and concepts behind the development of the system are common sense, cohesion, efficiency, sustainability and above all fidelity to the source material.

Matt is a self taught artist, and has previously worked as the designer / art director of Sheffield based ‘Now Then’ magazine, where his highly detailed, calculated work was implemented in a cover to cover feature.

His current work includes a series of illustrations for the third Dark Mountain anthology, a published col-lection of fiction, poetry and art centred on ecological and social issues. Previously Matt has also collabo-rated with events and organisations such as Tinnitus, DLS, Planet Terror and Bad Taste Records.

Art ForgeCADS Programmes

Sheffield Art Forge was originally formed by CADS members, and is now incorporated as a separate, non-profit organisation which manages the Arts Programme at CADS. With the aim of delivering innovative, high quality events aswell as supporting emerging art-ists, Sheffield Art Forge has been active in the area since October 2010, and manages the program-ming of arts events, making use of the warehouse spaces to put on exhibitions and workshops at the Shalesmoor venue. As well as fea-turing local talent in its exhibitions, Sheffield Art Forge alsoshowcases work from international artists, particularly those working

with new and digital media. There is a strong emphasis on encour-aging artistic collaboration and providing informal, contemporary exhibitions that are accessible to a diverse audience.

Past exhibitions have included ‘The Globalsapiens Collective’, featur-ing local artists Mikk Murray, John Ledger and Jade Morris, and ‘Re-quiem for A Post Soviet Dream’,which exhibited the work of Lithu-anian artist Augustinas Naslenas. In 2011, Sheffield Art Forge hosted ‘Regenerate’, a seven month pro-gramme of events exhibiting localtalent, graduates and artists fea-tured in “Now Then” magazine,

as well as workshops and perfor-mances in association with Sen-soria festival. You can read more about Regenerate on next page.

Sheffield Art Forge also hosts ‘The Cucumber Lounge’ a regular event which features live music, art exhibitions, performances and DJ’s. As part of the scheme’s outreach program, The Cucumber Lounge attracts a range of audiences and creates opportunities for artistic development by showcasing the work of local talent such as musi-cians like Loveboat and Mother-folkers, as well as artists Jessica Wong, Stephen Milligan and Stuart Faulkner.

CADS Programmes

In 2011, Sheffield Art Forge hosted Regenerate, an eight month long programme that held art exhibi-tions, workshops, music events, performances and commissions.

Regenerate’s programme included a two week exhibition of audio visual art, called ‘Listen Up’, as well as the ‘Explore’ mural com-mission showcase, in partnership with ‘Now Then’ magazine. Events featuring circus performances, up-coming musicians and live painting were also part of the line up, and from June to September, CADS also invited three recent fine art gradu-ates to work and display their art, based around the theme of re-

generation, as part of the project. The graduates were given a free studio space at CADS for the three months duration, at the end of which the artists had a two week exhibition of works produced.

As part of Sheffield Art Forge’s aim to promote emerging talent and showcase the best in contempo-rary art forms, Regenerate was open to a wide range of audiences, from children and families to stu-dents, as well as those in the local art scene. The project aimed to provide a culture boost to an often overlooked, industrial area of Shef-field, and to raise public awareness of reusing former industrial space

for creative activity. The ‘Listen Up’ exhibition worked to establish Sheffield Art Forge as a promoter of cutting edge electronic and digital art, and through the Explore and Regenerate commission scheme, local artists were given the op-portunity to network and publicise their work. The graduate exhibi-tions forged links between the Art Forge and Sheffield universities, and the Now Then mural show-case provided publicity for the programme as well as showcasing a diverse selection of local artists. Through its varied line-up and comprehensive promotion, Regen-erate worked to increase aware-ness of CADS as well as Sheffield Art Forge.

CADS Brochure 2013

As part of Regenerate, the Listen Up exhibition ran for two weeks at the end of April, and featured a selection of local artists working with sound to create audio-visual installations and sound sculptures. The exhibition explored the rela-tionship between sounds and their relative environment, by utilising space both indoors and outside of CADS.

Featured artists included: Mark Fell, whose work with synthetic sound, light and experimental technolo-gies is recognised internationally; Neil Webb, an audio visual artist

and lecturer in sound at Sheffield Hallam University; Adrian Moore, an electro-acoustic composer who writes music intended for sound diffusion over multiple loudspeaker systems, and sound designer Ron Wright, whose research concerns the relationship between audio and landscapes both real and imagined.

The exhibition shifted from the more familiar representations of audio art to the more abstract and surreal, and aimed to engage visitors with sound as an artistic medium beyond its typical use.

The work exhibited ranged from unusual musical practises to instal-lation pieces, and employed the entire CADS facility.

As well as its exhibition event, Listen Up also hosted an evening of performances in association with the Sensoria film and mu-sic festival. The event featured a variety of sonic artists, some of whom were featured in the exhibi-tion, and presented pieces with a range of approaches to sound, such as soundscapes, algorithmic and electroacoustic music.

Sensoria is a music and film festival which holds screenings, performances, events and exhi-bitions in venues around Shef-field. Drawing inspiration from Sheffield’s musical heritage and creative culture, Sensoria has been running since 2008, showcasing

innovative artists and bold con-temporary events. In 2012, Sen-soria worked in association with Sheffield Art Forge and Dirty Little Secret to host wAVe, an audio-vi-sual event featuring artists includ-ing Zan Lyons, Scanone and Blood

Working with External Partners: Art Forge & Sensoria / Wave

Sport. The event aimed to provide visitors with an immersive experi-ence exploring the relationships between art, film and music, and featured live bands, short films and performances employing the use of digital audio visual techniques.

SKINN

Creating networks between busi-nesses, encouraging the sharing of resources and local regeneration.

SKINN - which stands for Shales-moor, Kelham Island and Neepsend Network- is a non profit organisa-tion based at CADS. The project was designed as a way of link-ing businesses and organisations within the northern part of the city centre, encouraging them to share resources and information, and promoting regeneration of thelocal area through cultural activi-ties and voluntary work.

SKINN was created as a reaction to several problems, such as envi-ronmental issues, negative public image and bad developments, that were affecting the area. Through

strategic planning, consulting and design, SKINN hopes to deal with these issues whilst creating ties within the community and maximising the use of existing resources.

SKINN regularly develops projects and hosts new events which are related to innovative urban devel-opment as well as art and cul-ture. Current projects include the Riverside Arts Programme, which focuses on area branding and reclamation of temporary public space, as well as the establishment of the SKINN area as being an en-vironmentally conscious centreand creative hub.

Recently SKINN has incorporated as a separate non-profit company limited by guarantee.

50 Ideas for better Sheffield was a collaboration between SKINN & Sheffield School of Architecture (SSoA) as part of Festival of the Mind, Sep 2012

Every year, the SSoA and Depart-ment of Landscape carry out an enormous amount of practical re-search into various aspects of Shef-field. This research could involve cataloguing area development, finding uses for empty shops, or creating an outdoor installation inside a former cutlery factory. However, much of this research is only presented once, at project reviews to an audience of univer-sity students and staff. After this initial presentation, the research

is shelved, meaning that huge amounts of important information are inaccessible to individuals and organisations in the city that may be able to use it.50 ideas for a better Sheffield reviewed such projects from the last 10 years, and presented it in the context of contemporary Shef-field, linking it with current local initiatives.

The public part of the project included a week-long exhibi-tion and an evening of talks and presentations at CADS. Both events aimed to facilitate creative dialog between people of the city, Shef-field City Council, the SSoA, and non-public organisations working on the ground.
